Epiphany:
That's it. Your last round of chemo is finally over.
Alexis:
No brass band?
Epiphany:
Huh. The other patients tend to complain. I know how you feel. You
want to jump up, look down from -- shout from the rooftops "hallelujah"
-- just as soon as you're finished throwing up.
Alexis:
You could write a how-to book on how to stay perky through chemo.
Epiphany:
Hmm.
Alexis:
Listen, I know you've gone through this yourself, you know what
it's like to have this poison pumped through your body. And I am
relieved that this is my last one. (Dr. Trent enters the room)
It is my last one, isn't it?
Sonny's
office at the coffee shop
Sonny:
Carly didn't show up and give a statement because we're married
now. And -- which means she can't be compelled to testify.
Ric:
Yeah, well, the case against you is still going forward.
Sonny:
Give it your best shot, Ric.
Ric:
That's right, I will, Sonny, I will. But right now, this takes priority.
Sonny:
A subpoena?
Ric:
That's right. I'm calling you to testify in Molly's custody hearing.
Alexis and I are going to court in a few days, and you are going
to help me get my daughter back.
Sonny:
How many times have we gone over this, Ric? I get up on the stand,
I'm going to make you look even worse than you already do.
Ric:
Because you think a father's right to his child is inviolable except
when it comes to me?
Sonny:
Yeah.
Ric:
Ok. So you're more focused on getting back at me than -- than doing
what's best for Molly?
Sonny:
A child Molly's age needs her mother.
Ric:
Alexis shows blatant favoritism where Kristina is concerned. My
daughter is too young to understand that right now, but eventually
she will. And I refuse to let Molly grow up in her own house feeling
like an also-ran or that she's not good enough.
Sonny:
You make a lot of money, Ric. Why don't you spend it on a shrink
instead of inflicting your psychosis on Molly?
Ric:
Sonny, you love your daughter just as much as I do. The truth is
you would do exactly what I'm doing if you were in my place.
Sonny:
I almost got full custody of Kristina. I backed off, remember, for
my daughter's sake because I thought that it was better for her
to stay with her mother.
Ric:
Yeah, well, how benevolent of you. And how many times have you seen
Kristina since then? How many excuses has Alexis made to keep the
two of you apart, right? And she loves you, she hates me.
Sonny:
Well, of course.
Ric:
Ok. Alexis won't compromise, Sonny, and neither will I. So you better
be prepared to get up on that stand and testify about the chronic
threat that you pose to both Kristina and to Molly, ok?
Diane:
Yes, well, we will just see about that.
Ric:
Oh. You're a criminal attorney, this is hardly your area of expertise.
Diane:
Hmm. It doesn't take much experience in family law to tell you that
my client will not be a useful witness.
Ric:
Well, I don't expect Sonny to give me any kind of glowing reference
as a father, but --
Sonny:
First, you go after Alexis' job, now you're going after her daughter
while she's fighting cancer? I mean, come on.
Ric:
And I expect you to say exactly that when I put you up on that stand.
Diane:
Oh! So you're hoping to prove you are a cold-blooded opportunist?
Ric:
No, Sonny is going to get up on that stand and he's going to tell
about how he and Carly took both Kristina and Molly to live with
him in his compound because Alexis was too sick to care for either
of her children.
Diane:
My client will have nothing to say.
Ric:
Fine. Good. Then he can just sit there, while I read all of the
police records stating all about the shootings, the car bombings
-- about the general mayhem that's a common occurrence in his sort
of business. How Sonny is a criminal and a mobster and he has absolutely
no business being near my daughter. That alone should get me custody,
I think -- especially since Kristina is still traumatized from witnessing
the violence that was there because of Alexis' negligence. You are
going to help me, Sonny, get my daughter back, whether you like
it or not.
Alexis:
So what's the prognosis, doctor?
Dr.
Trent: I would've preferred chemo, but we stopped, because at this
point, your body can't take any more.
Alexis:
So whatever is killing the cancer is also sucking the life out of
me.
Dr.
Trent: Look, I know you considered alternative forms of treatment.
Alexis:
Yeah, I said the chemo would be worse than the cancer. I hate it
when I'm right all the time.
Dr.
Trent: Yeah, I -- chemo's no fun, but it works. You're living proof.
Alexis:
Hmm, a bald, vomiting mass huddled on the sofa is not a ringing
endorsement for the chemo. And I must tell you, doc, that anti-nausea
medication is highly overrated.
Dr.
Trent: You just need time to rest.
Alexis:
And then I'm going to do this whole thing all over again.
Epiphany:
Doctor, won't you need more tests before you'll know?
Dr.
Trent: We'll continue this tomorrow.
Alexis:
So much for the brass band.

Ric:
Show up at the custody hearing prepared to testify or be charged
with contempt.
Diane:
This is going to backfire on you.
Ric:
Well, then Sonny should be looking forward to seeing me at the custody
hearing.
Sonny:
I'll make sure to tell the judge how you dragged me into your court,
wasted my time. You got no case against me as far as the alcazar
shooting. It's just, you know, petty revenge -- it's what he does.
Ric:
Ok, the two cases first of all, are unrelated. But since you did
mention the alcazar shooting, I am planning on filing a brief requesting
that the judge deny spousal privilege where Carly's case is concerned
-- since you just remarried her to subvert the system and make sure
that she doesn't testify against you.
Diane:
That is a ridiculous accusation.
Ric:
I don't see Sonny denying it.
Diane:
The police have in custody a witness who can establish intent on
alcazar's part. Carly's testimony is immaterial. Mr. Corinthos loves
his wife, and that is the only reason that they got married.
Sonny:
But you just keep fishing, Ric.
Ric:
And you keep scrambling, Sonny. You got so many crimes that you're
trying to cover up, I can't see how you keep track. The great thing
about it is I just got to convict you of one of them. But in the
meantime, my daughter comes first.
Sonny:
Alexis is in bad shape. There's no way she can handle a custody
hearing.
Diane:
She might not have any choice.
Sonny:
You got to get Ric to back off.
Diane:
Yes, well, as Ric pointed out, I don't deal in family court.
Sonny:
You are strong, you know how to play his game, just do what Alexis
would do. If she had strength, she would back him into a corner
and negotiate.
Diane:
All right. All right. Let us just assume I'm able to work this little
miracle of legal maneuvering. The question then becomes, will Alexis
negotiate?
Sonny:
I'll handle Alexis.
Diane:
Just in case you were wondering, I'm here to get an affidavit from
dr. Trent detailing Alexis' treatment for cancer.
Ric:
I fail to see the relevance.
Diane:
Well, you will -- when I stand in front of a custody judge and compare
the timeline for Alexis' diagnosis and treatment of cancer with
the timeline of you sleeping with her daughter, making a grab for
her job, and basically trying to steal her child away.
Ric:
Molly is my daughter, as well. I happen to love her.
Diane:
So does her very sick mother.
Ric:
That doesn't give Alexis the right to cut me off from her.
[Diane
chuckles]
Diane:
Well, good luck making that argument. You're still going to come
across as a soulless monster who's trying to take a child away from
her cancer-stricken mother.
Ric:
Hmm. Why are you doing this?
Diane:
I'm being paid.
Ric:
Yes, but you're a criminal attorney. I'd hate to see you lose your
reputation by losing in family court.
Diane:
Cancer is a terrible and all-too-common disease. And if we are assigned
a judge with a friend, a parent, a spouse, a child who is suffering
or has suffered what Alexis is suffering, then you will be the one
to lose, Mr. Lansing.
Sonny:
Alexis? You ok?
Alexis:
I just had another round of chemo. How to put this? I'm not exactly
feeling like my perky self.
Sonny:
I hate to bother you with this, but Ric just hit me with a subpoena.
Alexis:
Oh. He wants you to testify at Molly's custody hearing?
Sonny:
We don't have to do this now. We can do this some other time.
Alexis:
No, no, we can make a big game out of it. What
makes me more nauseous -- the chemo or Ric?
Sonny:
I have contact with Molly through Kristina. But since I, you know,
am a known criminal and live a dangerous life, somehow that makes
you an unfit mother.
Alexis:
He's not going to be able to prove that.
Sonny:
Well, Ric's going to enter every police report about my violence
in my home into evidence. And you know he's going to say that you're
a reckless mother because you let Molly stay with me and Carly while
you're in the hospital.
Alexis:
He's a despicable attorney --
[Sonny
sighs]
Alexis:
I think that's an oxymoron.
Sonny:
He's just fighting for his kid, I don't know. You know, if I was
in his -- in his shoes, maybe I would do the same thing.
Alexis:
But you didn't. You see, you decided to do what was best for Kristina.
I just don't think that he's ever going to be able to share your
perspective.
Sonny:
I know you want to fight Ric with everything you got. But don't
you think it's best just to maybe work out an --
Alexis:
Oh -- oh.
Alexis
runs to the bathroom.
Sonny:
You ok?
Alexis: Just the cumulative effect of the chemo. I've never felt more
attractive.
Sonny:
You're going to have to postpone the hearing.
Alexis:
No. I can't.
Sonny:
What do you mean, "no"?
Alexis:
Because that just validates the fact that I can't take care of Molly
-- that's what he'll say.
Sonny:
Then you need to negotiate a compromise with Ric.
Alexis:
I can't do that. You know that better than anyone else. As soon
as you compromise him, he'll -- it's a prelude to a double cross.
Sonny:
You're backing yourself into a corner like you did with me when
we were fighting for custody of Kristina. Hey, we found a happy
medium, we share custody, it worked out better than we expected.
Alexis:
That's different.
Sonny:
What do you mean, it's different?
Alexis:
He doesn't want Molly, he just wants to punish me.
Sonny:
Ok, you know he's going to take advantage of your weakness.
Alexis:
He's certainly going to try.
Sonny:
Use your bargaining power and make a deal. You may give up some
visitation, but you know what? It's better than passing out at the
custody hearing or throwing up or whatever --
Alexis:
I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to pass out or throw up.
I'm going to be strong, and that's just the way it's got to be.
Sonny:
Ric's about to drag Alexis into family court. She is in no shape
for a custody hearing.
Jason:
Yeah, sam is worried about her, too, but I don't know what we can
do for her.
Sonny:
Well, I'm thinking Carly could help.
Jason:
How?
Sonny:
Well, she could tell the judge that I'm a good father, that I spend
a lot of time with my children and that I'm good with my children
and she's fine with it. I'm in no danger to Kristina and, by extension,
Molly.
Jason:
Is this coming from Alexis or coming from you?
Sonny:
I have not mentioned it to Alexis, but I -- I do believe Carly can
help. So what I want you to do is I want you to go get her.
Jason:
I can't do that.
