"You Think She's Going to Die, Don't You?"

Alexis: Dr. Lee, did you get the results of Sam's blood test?

Kelly: There's no change, but you should know we've only got five more units to spare.

Alexis: Five? That's it? That doesn't sound like enough.

Kelly: It probably isn't.

Alexis: And then that's -- that's it? Once it's depleted, that's it?

Kelly: I'm so sorry.

Ric: Hey. I come bearing gifts -- coffee and a muffin for you, and a surprise.

Alexis: Oh, a get-well card.

Ric: Yeah. Kristina drew it last night.

Alexis: Did you tell her --

Ric: No, no, no, no. She doesn't know that Sam is her half sister. She just thinks she's the nice lady who helped her when she was sick.

Alexis: And now Sam's sick. By the time Kristina finds out that she has a big sister, Sam could be dead.

Ric: Listen, did sothing happen while I was gone?

Alexis: She's not responding to the blood transfusions.

[Ric sighs]

Ric: I'm so sorry.

Alexis: Jason and I were taking turns last night, hoping that she would wake up, but it -- it didn't happen, and she's -- she's getting worse. Her -- her breathing is shallow, you can hear it.

Ric: Ok. I wish there was something that I could do for you. Why don't you let me sit in, all right? I know spending so much concentrated time with Jason has got to be driving you nuts.

Alexis: No, I want to give Sam access to one complete person, and I can't leave.

Ric: All right, all right.

[Alexis sighs]

Alexis: Jason and I are actually helping each other. I never thought I'd say that.

Ric: Hmm.

Alexis: There's no love lost between us.

Ric: You saying that you're actually bonding with Jason?

Alexis: I wouldn't go that far. Let's just say that we're united in a common cause. The other stuff doesn't seem to matter much at the moment. God, I can't believe this has happened.

Ric: Hey, come here, come here, come here.

Alexis: Oh --

Ric: You need to be strong for Sam, all right? Ok?

Alexis: What she needs is blood, and there isn't any.

Elizabeth: Dr. Lee, we need you in Sam's room right away.

Alexis: What -- what's up?

Ric: What -- what's happening?

Elizabeth: I think Sam's just turned a corner.

Jason: Ok. We're waiting for you. I'm right here. Alexis wants to get to know you. I know you want that, too. So keep fighting, please.

Elizabeth: Anything?

Kelly: I need to examine her. Give me a minute?

Jason: Ok.

Alexis: What's happening?

Jason: Her blood pressure went up and held. Elizabeth didn't know why, but maybe the transfusions are working.

Alexis: Good, good. See, I knew she was going to beat this.

Kelly: Sam is stabilizing. I think she's going to recover.

Alexis: Thank god.

Jason: Is she going to wake up soon?

Kelly: Anytime now. One of you can be there if you like.

Jason: Ok.

Alexis: Go ahead.

Jason: Dr. Lee says that you're stabilizing, that you're going to wake up soon. Sam, can you hear me? Sam?

Jason: You're getting better, Sam. You can fight this. Please. I know you can.

Alexis: Why isn't she waking up?

Kelly: It's hard to say. Maybe you should go in, too.

Alexis: Sam, I want you to wake up. You and I have a lot to talk about, and I'm going to need you to do that. Sam, you need to try really hard and focus -- wake up.

Kelly: Find Patrick Drake.

Elizabeth: He's out of town.

Kelly: Then find Noah. Get him here as soon as possible.

Alexis: You know, it could be good that they're taking her for neurological testing.

[Alexis sighs]

Alexis: Why won't she wake up?

Ric: She will, soon.

Alexis: Why aren't you saying anything? You think she's going to die, don't you?

Kelly: I'm sorry, but we may be looking at a serious problem here.

[Jason sighs]

Jason: What -- what kind of problem?

Kelly: Sam may have devoped intracerebral edema with proximal spinal cord compression.

Alexis: How serious is this?

Kelly: I prefer not to speculate.

Alexis: Which means it could kill her.

Elizabeth: Hey.

Kelly: It's what Noah suspected.

Elizabeth: Oh, god. Sam has been through so much. She's finally getting better, and now this happens?

Kelly: I have to find a way to tell the family.

Elizabeth: And -- and there's no procedure that can relieve this condition?

Kelly: According to Noah, surgery isn't an option. Sam would bleed to death before the procedure was completed.

Elizabh: So there is a procedure?

Kelly: It's too risky. The only hope -- and I admit it's a slim one -- is to start her on medication and hope the intracerebral edema clears up without surgery.

Mayor Floyd: Excuse me, nurse? I am Mayor Floyd.

Elizabeth: Yes, I know who you are.

Mayor Floyd: Good. I need to see Sam McCall. Could you please tell me her room number?

Elizabeth: Look, this really isn't a good time for Sam to be having visitors right now. So if you take a seat, I'll make sure that --

Mayor Floyd: I am afraid that this can't wait. I do need Sam McCall's room number.

Stan: It's actually I.C.U. One. I was on my way over there. I'll take you.

Mayor Floyd: Thank you.

Kelly: It's a potentially fatal condition.

Alexis: Is she in any pain?

Kelly: No.

Alexis: How are you going to treat it?

Kelly: We'll start Sam on a regimen of oxymethasone and osmotic diuretics. There's a slim chance it'll relieve the problem.

Alexis: And if that doesn't work?

Kelly: It'll cause brain death.

Mayor Floyd: You can keep your distance from that criminal.

Ric: Oh -- whatever it is, Mayor, ok, it's going to have to wait.

Mayor Floyd: And I can't believe I have to remind you that avoiding underworld figures should be your first priority as new District Attorney.

Ric: Can't you see we're in the middle a family crisis here? Why don't you show a little compassion and back off?

Elizabeth: Ric, you have an urgent phone call.

[Ric sighs]

Alexis: It's ok, honey, take it. I'm all right. This is really a bad time.

Mayor Floyd: I just held a press conference in which I played you up as God's gift to law enforcement. Dot make a liar out of me.

Alexis: Look, I can't do this right now. My daughter is seriously ill.

Mayor Floyd: Then why aren't you home with her? From what I get, Ms. Mccall --

Alexis: Sam is my daughter, all right? It's a long story, and I'm not going to get into it right now.

Mayor Floyd: I like the twist. If it doesn't hurt your credibility, it could cement your job.

Alexis: What is that supposed to mean?

Mayor Floyd: If you use your newfound access to put your daughter's fiance behind bars, you could own this town. I hope your daughter pulls through.

Orderly: I saw the press conference. Congratulations on becoming the new D.A.

Alexis: Thank you. I need to stop by and see my girls, and I need to stop by the office --

Jason: I'll let you know what's going on.

Alexis: Thank you.

Alexis: How are you going to treat my daughter's condition?

Elizabeth: I am so sorry.

Kelly: I'm sorry, Alexis, but Sam's only chance is if the medication works.

Alexis: Then there's no surgical procedure that'll keep her alive?

Jason: There's got to be some way to help Sam.

Elizabeth: There is. They can operate.

Kelly: If we attempt an operation, Sam will bleed to death.

Elizabeth: The operation is high-risk, but I just spoke to Patrick Drake and he's on his way home right now.

Kelly: This procedure will almost certainly be fatal.

Elizabeth: If anyone can pull off this surgery, it's Patrick. He can save Sam's life.
