"He Gave Me His Word"

Outside of Kelly's.

Sonny: Hey. What are you doing here? Huh? Remember me? Sonny? We were looking at babies at the hospital? You're such a cute girl. You didn't come here by yourself. Where's your mama? Is your mama around here?

Kristina: Mama here.

Sonny: Mama here? Where?

Kristina: There.

Sonny: All right, come here. (He picks her up) Ah.

Viola: Kris-- oh, thank goodness. I swear, I turn away for one second and she's out the door.

Sonny: I know -- I know how kids are. I got two boys of my own. One's always running off, you know.

Viola: Yeah?

Sonny: I thought it would be different with girls, but --

Viola: Oh.

Sonny: Looks like it'll be the same thing.

Viola: You expecting a daughter?

Sonny: Yeah, yeah.

Viola: Oh, congratulations.

Sonny: Thank you, thank you.

Alexis comes from around the corner and sees Sonny holding their daughter.

Alexis: Sonny? What -- what's going on here?

Alexis: Hi, sweetie pea. (She takes Kristina from Sonny) Oh, hi, baby. Oh, I'm surprised to see you here. Unless, of course, you came for --

Viola: Yeah, it's on the way home from the park. We normally stop for cookies.

Alexis: Cookies, right, yeah.

Viola: Cookies.

Sonny: So, Kristina? Hey. Hey. What's her favorite? Does she like chocolate chip? Do you like chocolate chip? Oatmeal? What, what, what? It's my treat.

Alexis: She likes -- that's ok -- she likes chocolate chip, and I'll -- I'll bring one home for her myself and I don't think she should maybe have sugar now, it's about time for her nap, so --

Viola: Right.

Alexis: I don't want to get you tired, ok? Mommy see you later? Give kiss?

Viola: All right, you heard your mommy.

Alexis kisses Kristina's cheek.

Alexis: Thank you, love.

Viola: Ok, come on. Say goodbye, Kristina. Bye-bye.

Alexis: Bye, sweetie. I'll see you later, ok?

Viola: Say, "Bye-bye, mama."

Alexis: Bye-bye.

Sonny: Bye.

Sonny: Don’t worry, I'm not going to steal her.

Sonny: I have no intention of stealing your nanny for Sam. Will you take it easy? You're making me nervous here. What's wrong with you?

Alexis: Speaking of Sam --

Sonny: Yeah?

Alexis: I took this case when you asked me to take it.

Sonny: Mm-hmm.

Alexis: Which means that you owe me the truth, correct?

Sonny: About what?

Alexis: This miraculous, not to mention timely, death-row confession that exonerates Sam. You couldn't arrange that better yourself. So did you?

Sonny: Sam didn't set that fire. This guy in Texas says he -- he did it.

Alexis: So then you don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, right? You owe me the courtesy to not lie to my face. Did you arrange that confession?

Sonny: I had nothing to do with it. I give you my word.

At the courthouse

Ric: Oh, I read over the transcript of the convict's confession. It's -- it's authentic enough, but I don't think it's going to hold up under scrutiny. I'm going to have to order a thorough investigation.

Alexis: I'm sure the court would require it a matter of course.

Ric: Well, that doesn't seem to faze you.

Alexis: I believe the confession is authentic.

Ric: Come on, you don't seriously believe that?

Alexis: I can and I do. Sonny gave me his word.

Ric: You know, I pegged you for a lot of things, but not willfully naive.

Alexis: You know, I don't expect you to understand this because you've probably never had one in your entire life, but there was a time when Sonny and I were friends, and there was a bond of mutual respect.

Ric: You are kidding yourself.

Alexis: Like I said, I didn't expect you to understand that.

Ric: Alexis, you are a lawyer. For God's sakes, start acting like one. This confession stinks.

Alexis: That may be true, but Sonny didn't procure it. I know when he's lying, I know when he's not, and he is not able to look me in the eye and lie to me. He gave me his word.

Ric: And you bought that? That's amazing to me. But after everything that has happened, after all of the evidence contrary to that, you still choose to delude yourself into thinking that this is a flawed but honorable man? I'd check that impulse, Alexis. You don't matter to Sonny on any level. You are useful to him, and that's why he is telling you what you want to hear.

Alexis: Your bias is showing. You want him to be a heartless liar. You want him to be guilty. Accept that the confession is true. Sam is innocent, Ric. Let it go.

Alexis: It's a waste of everybody's time.

Ric: That confession is a lie and I'm going to prove it and then I'm going to charge Sonny with obstruction of justice. I don't want to charge you too.

Alexis: Is that a threat?

Ric: No, as a matter of fact I happen to respect you. I think you're crazy but I do respect you Alexis. But I think you've suffered enough for Sonny's sake, don't you? Now do yourself a favor and go back in there and resign from Sam's case before it's too late or else you're going to go down with him.
