"I Want You to Represent Sam"

Sonny: I need to speak with you.

Alexis: About what?

Sonny: The mother of my child.

Alexis: Not -- not in front of Kristina. Viola?

Viola: Yeah?

Alexis: (to Viola) Hi. Will you do me a favor?

Viola: Sure.

Alexis: Can you maybe give her a bath?

Viola: Oh, no problem. Come on, baby. Come on, sweetie.

Alexis: I'll read you a bedtime story, ok?

Viola: It's rubber ducky time -- quackie, quack, quack! Say night-night. We'll be back. Wobble, wobble, wobble.

Sonny: She's getting bigger every day.

Alexis: How do you want to handle this?

Sonny: It's up to you.

Sonny: We were friends once. Um -- somewhere we became enemies. I don't know how, why, but it happened.

Alexis: It was a long time ago.

Sonny: Right.

Alexis: I had the luxury then of making some irresponsible choices. That's changed. I'm a mother.

Sonny: You're also a damn good lawyer, and Justus -- so good, I mean, Justus asked me to come over here to talk to you before I went any further. You know better than anybody what Sam’s going through. You're the -- you're a mother of your own --

Alexis: Sam?

Sonny: Yeah, she was convicted of murder years ago in South Carolina. She's innocent. I -- I want you to get her released.

Alexis: You came here to hire me?

Sonny: I want you to represent Sam. Why else would I come here?

Alexis: I -- I’m not sure that there's anything that I can do.

Sonny: Ahem -- Alexis, Sam -- she's pregnant with my daughter. I just need you to make sure that my child is not born in prison.

Alexis: I can’t.

Sonny: Forget history. Just think about a woman who loves her baby. She doesn't want her child to pay for her mistakes.

Alexis: I can only imagine what she's going through.

Sonny: Right. That's why I have to protect her.

Alexis: She's already been convicted. I'm not sure that there's anything that I can do.

Sonny: No, there is a lot you can do. You're the best. I'm willing to pay you whatever it takes.

Alexis: Not everything is for sale. What's really going on here? This Sam is a woman that you slept with in your most recent separation from Carly. I get that. I get that the pregnancy is an unforeseen complication. But why -- why are you doing this?

Sonny: Well, it's my daughter, for one thing. Yeah, look, if Sam had lied, tried to keep the baby from me, I might be willing to let her rot in prison. But that's not the case.

Alexis: Well, then it's fortunate for Sam that she told you the truth.

Sonny: I promised that I would take care of Sam and the baby, and that's what I’m going to do.

Alexis: I don't even know what I’m dealing with here. I haven't seen anything --

Sonny: You're dealing with Ric Lansing, ok? He's railroading Sam. This is one thing that -- you would burn for this before.

Alexis: I agree that he's a power-mad megalomaniac. However, he's a very qualified -- in fact, he's a brilliant attorney.

Sonny: Too brilliant for you to beat? You don't think you're good enough to win against Ric Lansing?

At the P.C.P.D.

Ric: Deputy, I can't allow you to walk Ms. McCall out of here without her seeing her legal counsel. It's a little thing called the sixth amendment.

Deputy: She's already been convicted of murder. She's been on the run for years.

Ric: I understand that, deputy, but she's in my jurisdiction now. I can't allow you to just walk all over her legal rights.

Deputy: You know, there are a lot of angry people back in South Carolina, Mr. Lansing. We're tired of waiting to put this woman behind bars.

Ric: I understand that. I understand that. Look, if you just allow me to do my job, there will be no chance for an appeal, ok?

Alexis: I'm here to see my client, Sam McCall.

Ric: You know, I'm not surprised that you took the case. You and Sam have a lot in common.

Ric: Well, you got brass, big brother, hiring one former mistress to represent another. Where does Carly fit into all this?

Alexis: All right, now that you've addressed your personal issues, maybe we can talk about the case.

Ric: Yeah.

Alexis: You were in there talking about extradition with my client. I didn't have a chance to consult with her. As you know, that's a violation of her rights.

Ric: Yes, I’m well aware of the issues here, counselor --

Alexis: Then stop stalling.

Ric: I'm just trying to get my bearings here. I understand why Sonny wants you to represent Sam, but why did you take the case? Are you extending an olive branch to him? Why would you want to?

Alexis: Your transparent attempt at getting me off balance by bringing up Sonny's name every five seconds is clearly not working.

Ric: Oh.

Alexis: You're going to have to come up with something much better than that if you intend to win.

Ric: Well, you never know. I might surprise you yet.

Sonny: I just wanted to tell you what's going on. I just got to the police station. Alexis is going to represent Sam.

Carly: I need to see you. It's -- it's important.

Sonny: I'll be right there.

Sam: Thanks for coming.

Sonny: Yeah. I'm going to get you out of here. I hired Alexis Davis to represent you.

Sam: Alexis? Ahem -- no offense, Sonny, but Alexis despises me, and she's not that fond of you, either, and I don't know if it's --

Sonny: Yeah, but, Sam, listen to me, ok? She loves to win, and she loves to beat Ric Lansing even more. Apparently, he put Skye Quartermaine in prison, and she wants to even the score.

Sam: Ok, but I've already been convicted.

Sonny: There are ways around that. All right? Alexis can get the verdict vacated, but you can't tell her that you're guilty like you did with Justus. Do you understand what I’m saying?

Sam: Yeah. I'm just -- I'm supposed to lie to my lawyer?

Sonny: All you're supposed to do is stay quiet and calm and let Alexis do her job. She wants Ric’s head on a silver platter, and she's going to get you acquitted in the process.

Alexis: I've already filed for a writ of habeas corpus. My client is entitled an extradition hearing before Mr. Lansing thinks he can deport her out of the state, which means she's not going anywhere.

Ric: Oh, Sonny, do me a favor. Would you thank Carly for me? We would've never found Sam if it wasn't for her.

Ric: You know, the smartest thing you could have ever done was resign as my brother's attorney, but here you are again, covering up his latest mess.

Alexis: Well, it must be history repeating itself day because here you are being so obsessed with him that's going to cost you yet another case.

Ric: Oh, no, I can't lose, Alexis. Sam set fire to a house and killed her own mother. The judgment's already in.

Alexis: You know, I've gone over the preliminary documentation of that trial. That trial was unbelievably sloppy. It may not be that difficult to overturn it.

Ric: You going to slow up the extradition process so we can spend all this quality time together?

Alexis: I'm going to petition for bail so that Sam can wait out the extradition process at home instead of in lockup. If you fight that petition, I will crucify you in the press.

Ric: Oh, no! Don't worry. I can handle the reporters.

Alexis: You'll be railroading a pregnant woman.

Ric: Oh, so what's this about, huh? Solidarity? You and Sam are single mothers raising a child on your own?

Alexis: She's a citizen with rights.

Ric: This is personal for you, Alexis, I can see it. The thing that I can't understand is, what do the two of you have in common, other than the fact that you slept with my brother?

Alexis: The extradition's been postponed.

Ric: Well, I'm impressed.

Alexis: I'm just getting started. You might want to practice losing on every conceivable level.

Ric: Boy, you sure are passionate about this.

Alexis: Well, victory gets my heart pumping.

Ric: Well, I wouldn't get ahead of myself if I were you. See, I’m going to come at you with everything I got. Expect the unexpected.

Alexis: Expect to lose.

Sam: So, they said I'm not getting transferred?

Alexis: You're going to be having an extradition hearing. I'm sorry I wasn't able to consult with you.

Sam: I'm just surprised you're here at all.

Alexis: I don't like the idea of a pregnant woman being in prison.

Sam: Look, when I testified at the custody hearing, you made me look like trash. How can you just turn around and represent me now?

Alexis: What difference does it make to you?

Sam: Well, you're defending me, so Sonny will owe you. Why do you have to have him in your debt?
