"Isn't it true that you have had a sexual relationship
with the woman sitting at that table?"
Alexis
is in the corridor outside the courtroom.
Alexis:
(on the phone) I'm not sure. I probably will not be able
to make that play group at 3:00, Viola. I appreciate you doing
that for me. Will you give her a kiss for me? Thank you. Bye-bye.
Ric
approaches her.
Ric:
You know, you should have no problem making that group with your
daughter. This is an open-and-shut case.
Alexis:
I agree. I intend to see that my client's acquitted.
Ric:
Alexis, you don't stand a chance against me. Your client is
already on her way to prison.
Alexis:
We'll see about that.
[Phone
rings]
Ric:
Excuse me. Audrey? How -- how's Elizabeth? When? Huh. Thank you
for calling. Listen, Audrey, just tell Elizabeth that I -- tell
her I said congratulations. Yeah.
Alexis:
I take it Elizabeth had her baby?
Ric:
Yeah, it's a boy.
Alexis
and Ric are alone in the courtroom. Alexis drops some papers on
Ric's table.
Alexis:
Here's the court reporter's minutes. It's an extra copy.
Ric:
I already had them print me up another copy.
Alexis:
Ok.
Ric:
You know, if anyone had told me that I wasn't going to be
with Elizabeth when this child was born, I would've told them
they were crazy.
Alexis:
You know, Ric, the baby is healthy. That's something to be happy
about.
Ric:
Yeah, but Elizabeth and I were going to raise the child together.
I would've loved that child as my own.
Alexis:
For whatever reason, she's made a choice to raise the baby
as a single mother. You have to try to respect that.
Ric:
Well, I guess I'm not surprised. I mean, you're obviously intent
on cutting Kristina out of her father's life. You really think
that's such a good idea?
Alexis:
You know what? I just made an effort to be sympathetic to
you. That was my mistake. We've got a case to try.
Alexis
walks back to her table.
Ric:
Ok, sure. You know what? I know that this whole paternity
issue with Kristina is a very sensitive subject for you. I mean,
I don't want you to accuse me of trying to throw you off before
opening arguments.
Alexis:
You're obviously unsettled by Audreys phone call. That's
understandable. But it doesn't merit a postponement, and if you
make a motion to do that, I will ask the judge to dismiss this
case.
Ric:
Oh, no, no, no, I plan on going forward with this. You see, my
first witness is on his way. Ned's going to blow this case right
out of the water.
Court
is in session. Ned is on the stand.
Ric: So in your opinion, Mrs. Rosco is a dangerous person?
Ned:
Faith Rosco is impulsive --
Alexis:
Objection.
Ned:
Often destructive --
Alexis:
Mr. Ashton's personal opinion of my client has no bearing on this
case.
Judge:
Overruled. Continue, Mr. Lansing.
Ric:
Isn't it true Mrs. Rosco threatened your life?
Ned:
Yes, that's true. Apparently, she was upset that I broke off
our business partnership, so she fired a bullet past my head.
Ric:
Thank you, Mr. Ashton. I have nothing further, your honor.
Judge:
Your witness, Ms. Davis.
Faith:
Go get him.
Alexis:
(stands) Would you describe the type of business that
you engaged in with my client?
Ned:
We were trying to take over another company.
Alexis:
Would you describe or categorize this takeover as hostile?
Ned:
Yes.
Alexis:
The company whose holdings you were trying to raid belonged to
Sonny Corinthos, correct?
Ned:
Yes, that's true.
Alexis:
(walks over to Ned) Mr. Ashton, you are an upstanding citizen.
Mr. Corinthos is a known criminal. Why would you become engaged
with the mob?
Ric:
Objection. Leading.
Judge:
Sustained.
Alexis:
I'll rephrase. Do you have a personal grudge against Mr. Corinthos?
Ned:
Kristina Cassadine, a woman I loved, was killed in the warehouse
that Sonny Corinthos owned when it exploded.
Alexis:
Were you trying to retaliate?
Ned:
I entered into a business partnership with Mrs. Rosco in order
to compete with Sonny. Now, if that drove him out of business,
so much the better.
Alexis:
Did you have a personal relationship with my client?
Ned:
Yes, we were involved for a brief period of time.
Alexis:
Which included having sex with her on the docks in the middle
of winter?
[Ned
sighs]
Ned:
Mrs. Rosco set me up.
Alexis:
Do you have any proof of this alleged setup, other than being
ticketed for public indecency?
Ned:
Well, if you can find Scott Baldwin, he might be able to confirm
it. He was part of the scam.
Alexis:
So that's your explanation, that it was her fault?
[Ned
sighs]
Alexis:
Mr. Ashton, you stated that Mrs. Rosco's a dangerous criminal,
yet you admit that your relationship, that your partnership with
her is illicit and motivated by revenge. So is it possible that
you're trying to get back at Ms. Rosco because she ended her affair
with you?
Ned:
Actually, I never stated she was a dangerous criminal.
Ric:
Objection.
Ned:
You did.
Ric:
Cause for speculation, and she's badgering the witness.
Judge:
Sustained. That's enough, Ms. Davis. Wrap it up.
Alexis:
I'm done, your honor. Thank you.
Judge:
Mr. Ashton, you're excused.
Faith:
Nice work. I've known hit men who were less lethal.
Alexis:
Shut up, Faith.
Judge:
I'm calling a 30-minute recess.
[Judge
pounds gavel]
Alexis
exits the courtroom. Ned stops her in the corridor.
Ned:
Alexis. What the hell are you trying to do, badger me into
admitting that Sonny is Kristinas father?
Ned:
If I really were Kristinas father, Id be filing custody
right now.
Alexis:
Well, you aren't.
Ned:
Exactly. Exactly. And since you have absolutely no regard
for me or my role as her so-called father, you decide it's ok
to just tell everybody that I am not.
Alexis:
What are you talking about? You are overreacting to a simple cross-examination.
Ned:
Sonny is a very smart man. He also has spies, ok? He could
very easily connect the dots.
Alexis:
I have to get back into the courtroom.
Ned:
Fine, get back to the courtroom. But just remember one thing --
there's a reason why we decided to keep Kristina away from Sonny.
If he ever finds out that you stole his child, he will very easily
just rip her right out of your arms. You know that and I know
that. That's the kind of man he is. And is that what you want
for Kristina? Is that what's best for your daughter?
Across
the hall, Ric is speaking to the press.
Reporter:
D.A. Lansing, just a quick question -- are you still confident
that you can get a conviction?
Ric:
The defense is totally unprepared for my next witness.
Ric:
Ah, I'm surprised you responded to the subpoena so quickly.
Sonny:
What do you want?
Ric:
Well, I need your testimony in order to put Faith in prison.
Sonny:
Ok, first of all, I had no idea that Faith Rosco used the Haunted
Star to launder money, so --
Ric:
Oh, no, no, no, Sonny, it doesn't matter. See, Alexis is defending
Faith, and I figure the best way to trip her up is to put you
on the stand, given the nature of your relationship.
Inside
the courtroom again.
Faith:
Ok, so who's the mystery witness that Ric is building his case
around?
Alexis:
I have no idea. Ric is arrogant and ill-prepared, and I am
perfectly prepared to deal with whatever witness he puts up there,
so don't worry.
Faith:
(Faith sees Sonny) Think again.
Alexis
turns around to see Sonny standing there grinning at her. Ric
observes this.
In
the courtroom. Sonny is on the stand.
Ric: Your honor, Mr. Corinthos and I are half brothers.
We share an adversarial relationship at best. I'm asking for permission
from the court to treat him as a hostile witness.
Judge:
I'll grant the request.
Ric:
Thank you, your honor. Furthermore, the witness has intimate knowledge
of both the defendant and counsel. Mr. Corinthos.
Sonny:
Yeah?
Ric:
Isn't it true that you have had a sexual
relationship with the woman sitting at that table?
(referring to Alexis)
