"Please,
Sir, Don't Insult Me"
Skye
and a detective are in the living room at the mansion. Skye flips
gleefully through a stack of papers he's given her.
Skye:
This work is amazing. (Hands him a check)
Man:
Thank you.
Skye:
(Flipping through the pages) No, really, you have made me
so happy. The quality of my life has just shot up. You can't imagine.
Man:
Just
doing what you paid me for.
Skye:
Oh, and there's a bonus in there already.
Man:
Thanks.
Skye:
Thank you.
Skye
continues to look through the papers obviously ecstatic when Ned
walks in
Ned:
Who was that?
Skye:
A private detective.
Ned:
Are you sure? I'd hate to have Dobson tell me you're lying to my
face again.
Skye:
I can finally prove that Dobson, devoted Quartermaine butler, doesn't
exist.
Skye
hands Ned the evidence.
Skye:
Dobson's entire resume is a fraud. Not one word, comma, or white
space is true.
They
sit down.
Ned:
I told grandfather to check him out.
Skye:
All these families that he says he worked for? They died years ago.
They don't even exist. (Flips a page of the papers) Oh, and
these addresses? They're lies. One of them is even in the middle
of the Thames.
Ned:
So why would anyone want to impersonate a butler, especially in
this house?
Skye
smiles and grabs the papers from Ned.
Skye:
Guess.
Ned:
He's a thief.
Skye:
Why would he hate me so much?
Ned:
Could be a psychopath.
Skye:
(Slowly so Ned will guess) Who doesn't want to be caught
on videotape? Getting warmer.
Ned:
He's definitely some kind of spy.
Skye:
Uh-huh --
Ned:
A plant of some kind, right?
Skye:
Warmer.
Ned:
Would you just show me the file?
Skye:
No. Where do you think Dobson goes when he leaves here, and why
is he so obsessed with Kristina?
Ned:
Kristina's at risk?
Skye:
Where do you think Dobson parked his car last night? Huh? Right
in front of Alexis' apartment.
Skye:
How do you think Alexis knew that Kristina had a fever?
Ned:
You think Dobson called her?
Skye:
Oh, unless Alexis is psychic on top of everything else.
Ned:
She does seem to always know what's going on in this house.
Skye:
Yeah, she's had an inside track for weeks. God only knows what Dobson's
been telling her.
Ned:
I'll bet you Alexis hired him. He's probably some out-of-work actor
from New York City.
Skye:
Yeah, playing a part created by Alexis out of nothing. How do you
think that's going to affect the court order?
Ned:
(Sighs) I better go call her right now.
They
stand up.
Skye:
No, you know what? We need proof.
Ned:
What's that?
Skye:
Oh, you know Alexis. She can talk herself out of anything.
Ned:
Well, that's true.
Skye:
No. We need to catch her by surprise.
"Dobson"
comes down the stairs in the foyer and hears Skye and Ned laughing
in the living room. Alexis approaches the open door slowly and passes
by it. Skye sees her and yells for her.
Skye:
Dobson -- Dobson? Hi.
Alexis:
(As Dobson) May I help you, Ms. Quartermaine?
Skye:
Yeah. You know, Ned and I were just trying to recall that story
you told Edward. It was so funny. Something about some lady who
wouldn't touch the newspaper because of the filthy commoners?
Alexis:
Oh, yes, she always wore white gloves.
Skye
keeps laughing.
Skye:
And what about that part about the jewelry?
Alexis:
She was getting on a bit. It will happen to all of us, unfortunately.
In any case, her family -- they were quite greedy. They were always
after her for something, so she felt inclined to hide her jewelry.
Every day. I'd find them in the oddest places.
Skye:
Uh-huh. Like where? (To Ned) Isn't this fun?
Alexis:
In her silk stockings. One time, she hid them in the family bible
-- a place she knew that her family would never look.
Ned:
Ah. That's a wonderful story, Dobson.
Skye:
Too bad not a word of it is true.
Alexis:
I have no idea what you mean.
Skye:
You see, Lady Heatherington doesn't exist. Neither does anything
on your resume. In fact, neither do you. Yes, we have finally figured
out who Dobson really is.
Skye
heads straight for the phone with Alexis following her.
Alexis:
Neither of you hired me. Therefore, neither of you have a right
to review my personal records. (Skye starts dialing) I may be a
simple butler, but I do have protection under the laws of this great
land.
Ned:
I'm hearing everything except a denial.
Alexis:
Clearly anything I say would be used against me.
Ned:
Well, now you're sounding like a lawyer.
Alexis:
Please, sir, don't insult me.
Ned:
Alexis coached you, didn't she? Just in case you got caught.
Alexis:
I have not the slightest idea what you mean.
Skye:
You're working for Alexis Davis. She hired you as a spy, didn't
she, because of Kristina?
Alexis:
I have work to do. (Turns to leave)
Ned:
(Grabbing her arm) No, you're not going anywhere.
Alexis:
I will not stay here and listen to such vicious accusations.
Skye:
(Leaving a message on Alexis' machine) Alexis, hi, it's Skye.
Look, Kristina has a fever, and she won't stop crying. I think you
have to get here right now. She needs her mother, so, please, get
here as fast as you can. Well, that'll do it.
Alexis:
Shame on you. Shame on both of you, playing on a mother's worst
fears.
Skye:
How else are we supposed to prove you're a spy for Alexis?
Ned:
I want to confront both of you at the same time, right now, face
to face.
