"You
Bastard!"
The courtroom is abuzz with the emergence of "Kristina"
on the stand. The judge pounds the gavel .
Judge:
Order! Order!
Scott:
It's a simple question, Alexis.
Alexis:
[As Kristina] You think if you keep calling me Alexis, it's
going to turn me back into Alexis? If you want to --
Alan:
This does not look good for Alexis.
Judge:
(Pounds gavel) Order!
Alexis:
You know what, your honor? I think he's a colossal bore, and I'm
not interested in talking to him anymore.
Scott:
Who found Alcazar's body in the alley?
Alexis:
What alley?
Scott:
Who screamed? Was it you or your sister?
Alexis:
When?
Scott:
Now, when does she take over, and when do you go away?
Cameron:
Your honor, he's hurting my patient.
Scott:
Who wrote on Ric Lansing's mirror, you or your sister? Who dragged
the baby out of town?
Alexis:
Alexis loves her baby.
Scott:
Oh, yeah? Well, what happens to the baby when you just disappear?
Who takes care of the baby? Aunt Bea? Mr. French? Who?
Dara:
Your honor --
Scott:
Your honor, this is ridiculous. She's as sane as anybody here in
the courtroom. This is a waste of time. This is a joke! I'm not
even going to bother with this any longer.
Scott
walks back to his desk. Alexis gets up out of the witness stand
and runs for the evidence table. She grabs the steak knife and goes
after Scott with it.
Alexis:
You bastard!
Cameron
lunges for Alexis and grabs the hand holding the knife. He gets
sliced by the blade and steps away.
Zander:
Dad!
Judge:
(Pounds gavel) Order! Order!
A
police officer grabs hold of Alexis and drags her away from Scott.
Zander:
Dad! Dad!
Alexis
struggles in the officer's hold.
Alexis:
You're hypocrites, all of you! You're blaming me for doing what
you wanted done. He had to die, otherwise he would've killed Alexis
and her baby the way he killed me!
Judge:
Recess!
Scott:
Your honor, do not call a recess. That's conceding that she's insane,
and she is not. Let me put her back up on the stand, cross-examine
her. I will prove it to you. She's faking. She's acting here.
Alexis:
(Hissing at Scott) You're the one I want. It's your fault!
You
should pay for what you've done!
Alexis
breaks free from the officer's hold and races toward Scott again.
She screams and grabs his lapels.
Alexis:
You bastard! (She's dragged
away once again) You bastard!
Judge
pounds gavel
Alexis:
Let me go!
Outside
the courtroom Monica and Alan are tending to Cameron's cut hand.
Alan:
If you hadn't put up your hand, she would've stabbed Baldwin.
She might've killed him.
Cameron:
I'll be fine.
Monica:
Well, it is a superficial wound, but I'd still like to have it checked
out at the hospital.
Cameron:
I can't leave Alexis.
Cameron
and Zander look at each other.
(Camera
switches to the courtroom)
Alexis
stands next to Dara breathless but calm holding her arms around
herself. An officer has a hold of her arm. She speaks to the judge
but doesn't make eye contact.
Alexis:
Your honor, it's Scott Baldwin's fault that Alcazar wasn't convicted.
He should've convicted him, and he set him free to terrorize all
of us. And you can't lock my sister up for something she didn't
do because I was just protecting her. Someone needed to protect
her.
Scott:
(Standing up) Your honor, we need to continue. There's no
reason for a recess.
Judge:
The defendant is in an agitated state.
Scott:
That's what she wants us to believe. This split personality, this
D.I.D. -- it's just an act!
Judge:
I'm not convinced.
Scott:
Well, I am. Let me put her up there. Let me continue.
Cameron
walks into the courtroom.
Cameron:
Your honor, I need to attend to my patient.
Scott:
Your honor, this is unheard of.
Cameron:
I need to talk her down before anything else happens.
Judge:
All right. Let the doctor attend to his patient.
Cameron:
Thank you. (Cameron walks up to the desk) I need you to step
back. You're making her feel threatened.
The
officer looks at the judge who gives him a nod. He steps away and
Cameron takes Alexis aside. He speaks so that everyone around can
hear him.
Cameron:
Are you all right, Kristina?
Alexis:
Everybody's very angry.
Cameron:
I'm not angry. I know you were just trying to protect Alexis. I
promise you, I'm not going to hurt her. I'm
not going to let anyone else hurt her. I'm your friend. I'm here
to help you.
Alexis
steps closer and whispers.
Alexis:
[As herself] I'm really sorry about your hand. I didn't mean
to do that.
Cameron:
That's all right, Kristina.
Scott:
Your honor, may I proceed?
Jax
steps up.
Jax:
Your honor, I'm sorry. It must be clear to everyone that Alexis
is too ill to go on.
Scott:
Oh, sit down. That's what she wants us to think.
Jax:
If the D.A. goes after her again, she could have a breakdown.
Judge:
(Angrily) You're not an attorney. You have no voice in these
proceedings. Sit down or you will be held in contempt!
Jax:
I have nothing but contempt for a decision to let this harassment
go on.
Judge:
Remove this man until he can get himself under control.
Jax:
(An officer pulls Jax to the door) Yeah, you can remove me
from the courtroom, but you know I'm right!
Judge:
Is Ms. Davis ready?
Cameron:
Your honor, may I have a moment?
Judge:
Approach the bench.
Cameron,
Dara and Scott approach the bench.
Cameron:
She's calm, but I'm unable to get the Kristina personality to retreat.
Scott:
That's what that little powwow was about? She's having fun with
this Kristina act. She's chewing up the scenery, your honor.
Dara:
Mr. Baldwin, your attitude is wearing thin.
Judge:
Let Dr. Lewis finish his thought.
Cameron:
I'm unable to get Alexis back, and that worries me. In the past,
I've always been able to convince the Kristina personality to withdraw.
If Mr. Baldwin is allowed to continue, I'd like permission to intervene
in the event she feels threatened again.
Scott:
Well, that's fine with me, your honor, because this charade will
be over no matter who she claims to be.
Dara:
Your honor, Mr. Baldwin is showing a disturbing and dangerous lack
of concern for the defendant's condition.
Judge:
Possibly. But at present, Ms. Davis seems to have pulled herself
together. I'll allow cross-examination.
Cameron
glares at Scott.
Scott
steps back and gives a satisfied look to Alexis. She glares back
at him.
Jax
is standing outside the courtroom frustrated when Skye walks up
to him.
Skye:
Jax,
are you all right?
Jax:
What's going on in there?
Skye:
The judge is letting Scott cross-examine Alexis.
Jax:
What is she thinking? I mean, can't she see that Alexis is not well?
Skye:
The judge also gave Cameron the right to step in if things should
take a turn for the worse.
Jax:
Well, they will. I'm sure Baldwin's got something up his sleeve.
Skye:
You want to tell me again how you've given up on caring for people?
How the thoughtful, considerate Jax is long gone? Because from what
I've seen today, he's very much alive and well.
Alexis
is on the witness stand again.
Scott:
Feeling better? Kristina, right?
Alexis:
[As Kristina] actually, I'm feeling much better. How you feeling,
Scott?
Scott:
Oh, I'm good.
Alexis:
Good.
Scott:
Now, that scene with the knife -- was that spontaneous or was it
something you and your shrink cooked up?
Alexis:
You think he's crazy?
Judge:
Simply answer the question.
Alexis:
Did he ask me one?
Scott:
So you're saying it was spontaneous, huh? Well, congratulations.
Meryl Streep's got nothing on you.
Alexis:
Then why did it look like you were about to wet your pants?
Everyone
laughs.
Scott:
Your honor, can we --
Judge:
For the last time, answer the question.
Alexis:
Do you honestly think that my sister would be capable of killing
anyone for any reason at all?
Scott:
You're intelligent, you're resourceful.
Alexis:
Scott, you're just after my sister because you've gone after everybody
else in Port Charles and haven't been able to get a conviction for
Alcazar's murder.
Scott:
Stop changing the subject.
Alexis:
You've known my sister for years, Scott. You tell me. Do you think
that she would be capable of going to Alcazar's suite, picking up
a steak knife, stabbing him with it, and then pushing him over the
balcony and watching him fall 14 floors, slammed on top of a car
roof?
Scott
gives Edward a sneaky glance.
Alexis:
If Alexis were going to go after Alcazar, she would have knocked
on his hotel door.
Edward
pulls out his cell phone and sends a message "Now" to
someone.
The
camera switches to the gatehouse where the nanny gets a page. She
reads the message from Edward and makes a call on her cell phone.
Alexis:
She would have told him, "I'll see you in court." Not
that that would do any good at all.
Ned's
cell phone ring and he answers it.
Bailiff:
No cell phones in the courtroom, please.
Ned:
Is Kristina all right?
Vera:
Something's wrong. I'm not sure what.
Ned:
What happened to her?
Vera:
She had a coughing fit and now her breathing is irregular.
Judge:
Turn off that phone or I'll have you removed from this courtroom!
Ned:
Call a doctor. I'll be right there.
Edward:
Your honor, it's an emergency. Something has happened to this man's
child.
Ned
jumps up and starts to leave.
Alexis:
[Seemingly as herself] What, Ned? Ned, what happened to my baby?
Cameron
gets an "uh oh" look on his face and Scott goes in for
the kill.
Scott:
Your baby? Don't you mean your sister's baby? Welcome back, Alexis.
Cameron:
(Standing up) Your honor, the D.A. has no idea what he's
talking about. By his own admission, he has no experience with Dissociative
Identity Disorder.
Scott:
There was never another personality. You're faking!
Cameron:
My patient is suffering from a mental illness.
Scott:
No, we're the one's suffering from her bad acting. Alexis Davis
is trying to get away with murder.
Dara:
(Standing up) Objection, your honor.
Judge:
Mr. Baldwin is allowed to continue.
Scott:
Thank you.
Cameron:
Ms. Davis' condition can manifest itself in a number of ways if
Kristina feels threatened.
Scott:
Oh, come on, Lewis, you're tap-dancing here. Everybody in the courtroom
heard "my baby." She's faking. Now, what are you going
to do, trot out some medical mumbo-jumbo to say that the baby crisis
caused Alexis to come out and Kristina's now back?
Cameron:
It's entirely possible.
Scott:
Oh, come on, this is a blunder you can't cover.
(Cameron
looks at Alexis)
Scott:
(Walking back to Alexis) And you -- you're faking, because
once the whole baby thing was mentioned, your ruse just flew out
the window.
Alexis:
[As Kristina] you heartless bastard. Alexis' baby could be in serious
trouble, and all you care about is your pathetic excuse for a career!
Scott:
No more questions, your honor. Ms. Davis may step down.
Cameron
and Alexis exchange desperate glances.
Jax
and Skye walks back into the courtroom.
Judge:
Prosecution will begin closing remarks.
Scott
stand up and begins to speak. Alexis stares out into space motionless
the entire time.
Scott:
Alexis Davis' mental illness is a lie. All of her actions have been
designed to fit into that little lie -- the emergence of Kristina,
the other personality that came out when she pushed Alcazar off
the balcony. The defense of the two people that were innocent, that
were up on murder charges. (Leaning in toward Alexis) The whispering
phone calls to the police. The information that she gave to the
police -- all preparation to reveal that the other person was controlling
the strings, so Alexis could be free and clear, or so she thought.
(He walks up to the stenographer) Could you read back the outburst?
Stenographer:
"Ned, what's happened to my baby?"
Alexis
winces a blink and Cameron looks concerned.
Scott:
Ms. Davis committed cold-blooded murder. Then she plotted and she
schemed, figured out a way to cover up her tracks. She's hiding
behind her own baby (gets in Alexis' face) to get away with
murder. (Turns
back to the judge) We cannot let that happen.
Scott
walks back to his desk.
Edward
grins.
Alexis
puts her head into her hand on the desk. She slowly turns to look
back at Cameron.
Dara:
Let's look at the facts. Cameron Lewis is Alexis Davis' psychiatrist,
arguably the person she trusts most in the world, yet she stabbed
him right before our eyes. Irrefutable
evidence of her mental state. (Walks toward the judge) Her
reaction to word of her baby's distress is consistent with D.I.D.
We
heard expert testimony that the personality of Kristina only emerges
when Alexis is threatened. Well, the prosecution and this courtroom
have been unrelentingly threatening to her, which explains why the
doctor was unable to get the personality of Kristina to recede.
It was only after her baby was in danger that Alexis the mother
emerged. May I remind the judge that this all began with Luis Alcazar,
a cruel, amoral criminal who was directly responsible for the death
of Ms. Davis' sister and left Ms. Davis and her unborn baby out
in the snow to die. Ms. Davis suffered greatly at the hands of Luis
Alcazar. She wanted to kill him. But those were not feelings that
Ms. Davis could act on, which tore her apart, literally. This is
a woman with a mental illness. She needs psychiatric care, and with
the love and help of her family and friends, she can get through
this. To put her in prison would be the real crime here.
Dara
sits down.
Judge:
(Pounds gavel) Everyone please sit down. I don't need to
deliberate. I've already made my judgment.
