"Toxins"
Alexis
arrives that the Quartermaine gatehouse where Cameron is sitting
on the couch reading.
She
walks in slowly. He hears her and turns around.
Cameron:
Why don't you come in from the cold? I've always wanted to say that.
He
gets up from the couch. Alexis remains in the open doorway.
Alexis:
I've changed my mind. I think this is a bad idea.
Cameron:
Why?
Alexis:
(Timidly) Because if there's something wrong with me, I'm
telling you that it's physical and they just haven't found it yet,
and I don't really see how this is going to help.
Cameron:
Alexis, close the door, I'm freezing.
She
slowly closes the door. She pauses and looks into the room. She
walks in front of bay window and takes in the room.
Alexis:
I'm used to seeing this place filled with candles. My sister liked
aromatherapy. I don't suppose you studied that in your psych class,
did you?
Cameron:
Was she happy?
Alexis:
She was radiant. She was innately happy. Until I lied to her, which
eventually killed her.
Cameron:
You blame yourself for that?
Alexis:
I don't want to be here. I want to go see my daughter. (She turns
and heads for the door)
Cameron:
Who will you be when you pick her up, Alexis? (She stops) Who will
ultimately take your baby home?
Alexis:
Why are you doing this?
Cameron:
I want to speak with Kristina.
Alexis
remains standing across the room from Cameron.
Cameron:
Why
weren't you and Kristina raised as sisters?
Alexis:
It's too complicated.
Cameron:
How'd you connect as adults?
Alexis:
She found me.
Cameron
begins to walk toward her.
Cameron:
Did you ever spend any time together as children?
Alexis:
No.
He
stands behind her and removes her coat from her shoulders.
Cameron:
Did you ever think about her, miss her? Wish you were with her?
Alexis:
You really need to stop, Cameron. (She walks away from him)
Cameron:
Am I getting too close?
Alexis:
Do you honestly think just because you say something provocative
to me that I'm just going to flip into Kristina? I can assure you
that isn't going to happen.
Cameron:
It's happened before. (He walks toward her)
Alexis:
I would never have survived my childhood if I snapped every time
someone said something upsetting to me.
Cameron:
Tell me about your mother.
She
pauses uncomfortably and then steadies herself.
Alexis:
She was an opera singer.
Cameron:
What happened to her?
Alexis:
(Turns her head away) She loved me very much.
Cameron:
How did she die, Alexis?
Alexis:
My stepmother slit her throat.
Cameron:
Who told you that?
Alexis:
I was there. I saw.
Sonny
sends Jason to give a message to Faith. He wants no more trouble
from her at Carly's club or anywhere in Sonny's territory.
Alexis:
I don't want to talk about my mother anymore.
Cameron:
Why
not?
Alexis:
I just don't. (Cameron sits down) I'm not the only person
who had a horrible childhood. (She sits on the couch)
Cameron:
Well, most of us don't see our mothers murdered in cold blood. How
old were you?
Alexis:
Old enough to know that it had happened.
Cameron:
Did Kristina see it?
Alexis:
No. She was just a baby. I hid her because I was afraid that
my stepmother would kill her, too. I hid her in a barn and I left
her there alone. And then when I came back, she was gone.
Cameron:
You probably saved her life.
Alexis:
I didn't know what to do.
Cameron:
Do you feel guilty about that?
Alexis:
(She fidgets and doesn't look at Cameron) I gave up on her.
My sister never gave up on me. She wanted to find me and she did,
and that cost her her life.
Cameron:
How did she find out the truth about your baby's father?
Alexis:
I was careless.
Cameron:
You told her?
Alexis:
No. I wrote her a letter. I wrote it down in a letter and I never
sent it. You know, I always tell my clients don't write anything
down, but I did. And she found it and confronted me, and she gave
me the opportunity to tell her the truth, but I didn't. I kept lying.
Cameron:
Did she know anything about Alcazar?
Alexis:
(She turns her head away) Of course not.
We
hear the gentle jingle of chimes. Alexis pauses and her uncomfortable
demeanor changes to a more confident one. She notices a candelabra
sitting on the credenza behind the couch.
Alexis:
(As Kristina) Who put that there? That doesn't belong
there.
She
reaches over the couch and grabs the candelabra.
Alexis:
That completely destroys the energy of the room. It's just wrong.
She
takes the candelabra to the fireplace mantel. Cameron watches her
curiously.
Cameron:
Kristina?
Alexis
rearranges some vases on the mantel.
Alexis:
(As Kristina) My sister doesn't need therapy. She needs meditation.
You're wasting your time.
She
carries a vase around the room looking for a place to put it.
Cameron:
I might be able to help her.
Alexis:
She doesn't need your help. She's got me.
Cameron:
You help Alexis?
She
removes her purse from the credenza and places the vase there.
Alexis:
Of course I help. She's my sister.
Cameron:
(Standing up) Exactly, how do you help her?
Alexis:
I
help her by (waves her arms) cleansing the energy in the
room -- and clearly this room needs a lot of work -- and then I
help to remove the toxins.
Cameron:
"Toxins"?
Alexis:
Toxins -- things that poison her life. (Raises her finger in
the air) Toxins can be people, too, you know.
Cameron:
Am I a toxin?
Alexis:
You're getting there.
Cameron:
What would you do if I were?
Alexis:
A toxin?
Cameron:
Mm-hmm.
Alexis:
(Walks back to the credenza and fusses with the vase)
If you were a toxin, I would -- I would filter you out.
Cameron:
Have you filtered anyone out lately?
Alexis:
As
a matter of fact, I have.
Cameron:
Was his name Alcazar?
Cameron:
Tell me what happened with Alcazar.
She
walks toward the fireplace holding her neck as if stressed.
Alexis:
(As
Kristina) He made her go into labor early and he left her in
the snow to die.
Cameron:
That's pretty toxic.
Alexis:
I thought so.
Cameron:
And did you filter him out? Did you kill Luis Alcazar? Kristina?
Alexis
pauses and then seems to snap out of it. She spins around.
Alexis:
(As herself) Just because you call Kristina's name doesn't
mean that I'm going to flip into her. I told you that.
Cameron:
Actually, I just spoke with her.
Alexis:
I highly doubt it.
Cameron:
We had a substantial conversation.
Alexis:
(Smart alecky) Did you? What did she say?
[Next
scene]
Cameron:
Sometimes, children develop alternate personalities as a way of
dealing with abuse. The alternate deals with the abuser while the
child remains confused but safe from reality.
Alexis:
I'm not a child. (She walks away from the fireplace)
Cameron:
Yes, but when Alcazar abandoned you in the snow, you desperately
needed help. What if that evoked images from your childhood, like
the moment your mother was murdered?
Alexis:
Why would it do that?
Cameron:
Because the emotions are the same -- panic, helplessness, rage,
terror.
Alexis:
Is that why you brought me here, because you wanted me to remember
my precious mother and my precious sister and how I failed them?
Is this you're way of helping me?
Cameron:
Alexis, try to stay calm.
Alexis:
I want you to get out. I want you to leave right now. In fact, you
have three seconds, Cameron. I mean it.
Cameron:
I'm not finished here.
Alexis:
Get out!
He
picks up his coat from the chair.
He
walks toward the door and Alexis is very upset. She doesn't look
at him.
Cameron:
I'll be in touch.
He
walks out and Alexis board her head about to cry.
Again
we hear the gentle chimes.
Alexis
lifts her head up confidently, takes in a deep breath and shakes
off her sadness.
