"Of
Swatches and Stomach Wounds"
Edward
tells Faith to enjoy Ned all she wants but to remember who is real
partner is.
Ric:
So, you're saying that you killed Alcazar, not Brenda or Jason?
Woman:
I'm going to touch you. Don't turn. Don't make any sudden movements.
Ric:
All right, ok.
She
hands Ric a plastic bag. He takes it and sees a piece of cloth inside.
Ric:
What
is this?
Woman:
Evidence.
Why do you think I gave it to you?
Ric:
I don't understand.
Woman:
It's from the night of the murder. Alcazar and I struggled and
his blood got on my coat. Here's the proof you need that will clear
Jason and Brenda.
Ric:
Look, if this blood matches Alcazar's, then we are on the right
track. But it's not enough to exonerate Jason or Brenda.
Woman:
You're a lawyer. Make it enough.
Ric:
No, no. Listen, the D.A.'s going to refute it. He's going to say
that it's after the fact. This swatch wasn't found at the crime
scene. It wasn't obtained through a legal warrant. There's no chain
of custody. They're just going to say we were fabricating evidence
to help Sonny's friends. I have to make sure that Scott Baldwin
knows that you really exist.
Woman:
You're pushing me. I don't like it.
Ric:
Ok, all right. Just calm down, all right? You've obviously come
this far because you want to see justice done, right? Ok, if you're
going to do it, do it.
Woman:
Don't move. Not a muscle.
The
cloaked woman turns and runs up the steps. Ric pauses and then turns
to see if he can see her.
Felicia
and Dara are walking through the courthouse hallway.
Felicia:
Can you get to the judge?
Dara:
Only with a damn good reason.
Felicia:
Ida lied. Every word of her testimony is false.
Dara:
Is this speculation on your part, or can you prove it?
Felicia:
I'm close. I tracked down the go-between that made the connection
with Ida, which took me back to the man who bribed her. His name
is Coleman. He owned a strip club at one time, but now he owns Jake's
Bar.
Dara:
Ok,
and how does this Coleman fit in?
Felicia:
I'm positive he's fronting for A.J. and Skye. I was just about to
get Coleman to admit it, but then A.J. walked in on us and it spoiled
everything. I really believe that if you subpoena him and put pressure
on him that he will talk. The very least thing that could possibly
happen is that this will show some doubt on Ida's testimony -
Suddenly
Ric rushes up to them.
Ric:
Excuse me, Ms. Jensen? Ms. Jensen, hi.
Dara:
Hi.
Ric:
(Shaking Dara's hand) I'm an attorney. My name is Ric
Lansing.
Dara:
Ric Lansing -- yeah, I know. You were once considered a suspect
in Alcazar's murder. How can I help you?
Ric:
I just met with the real killer tonight, and she said she wants
to exonerate Jason and Brenda.
Felicia:
You saw the killer?
Dara:
You said "she."
Ric:
Yes, the killer is a woman. I never saw her face. She doesn't want
to incriminate herself. But she definitely made it very clear to
me that she was responsible for Alcazar's death, not Brenda or Jason.
Dara:
Can you convince her to come in?
Ric:
I tried. That's where she draws the line.
Felicia:
That's good. How do you prove that?
Ric:
(Pulling an envelope out of his coat pocket) Well, I have
a D.N.A. sample here -- blood on the killer's coat the night of
Alcazar's murder. I think that's enough for a 440 motion. (He
hands the envelope to Dara)
Felicia:
What does that do?
Dara:
It vacates the judgment if I can win it.
Felicia:
So Brenda and Jason would be cleared?
Ric:
Yeah, or be retried. But something tells me Mr. Baldwin doesn't
want to risk his political standing by sticking his neck out a second
time.
Dara:
Not if there's a risk of him getting it chopped off.
Ric:
Mm-hmm.
Dara:
I'm going to need you, both of you.
Felicia:
Sure.
Ric:
Anything.
Dara:
Felicia can fill you in on what's going on with Ida Warren. In the
meantime, I will go file the motion. Both of you, catch up with
Scott and get him to see the risks of fighting this. I'm going to
my office. Let me know what happens, ok?
Dara
leaves for her office.
Ric:
Ok.
Felicia:
I
know Scott Baldwin. He's loving this publicity that he's getting
for this Mr. and Mrs. Mobster murder trial, and he won. He's not
going to give it up without a fight.
Ric:
Well,
let's go give him one.
[Next
scene[
Ric
and Felicia arrive at the PCPD. Scotty is in the squad room as they
walk in.
Ric:
Mr. Baldwin. We have new evidence in connection with Alcazar's
murder.
Scott:
Where
you been, Lansing, in a closet? The jury came back with a guilty
verdict on all the counts.
Taggert:
(Walking up to the group after overhearing) Well, personally,
I'd be very interested to hear what Mr. Lansing has to say. But
if you want to skip it, I'll get you up to speed later.
Scott:
My office.
They
all leave for Scott's office.
The
foursome arrive at Scott's office.
Scott:
Come
on, make it snappy here. (Pulls an electric razor out of the
desk drawer) I got a press conference to get ready for in a
couple of minutes. (Turns on the electric razor)
Ric:
Well, you may want to rethink talking to the press unless you're
prepared to announce than Jason and Brenda are innocent.
Scott:
Why would I do that?
Ric
puts the bag down on Scott's desk. Scott picks it up.
Ric:
I met with Alcazar's real killer on the pier tonight. It's a woman.
I wasn't able to see her face.
Scott:
How convenient.
Ric:
However, this bag contains a swatch from her coat. It's stained
with Alcazar's blood from when they struggled.
Scott:
(Picks up the bag) Very dramatic, very transparent. Lansing,
this is your last-ditch attempt to cast some sort of a shadow of
doubt on Jason and Brenda's conviction. Well, it's not going to
work, ok, so get out.
Felicia:
Your case is full of holes. Your big eyewitness turned out be a
liar.
Scott:
Well, another country is heard from.
Felicia:
It's true. She was paid to lie.
Scott's
goofy assistant pokes his head in the door.
Man:
There's a call you need to take on line three, boss.
Scott:
Get
out of here! I'm busy!
Man:
It's a woman. She says Lansing told you about --
Taggert:
Wait, wait, wait, it's a woman. Take it.
Ric:
Oh, really?
Taggert:
(Points to the assistant) Tape it.
Man:
You got it. (He leaves)
Scott:
Taggert, don't order my assistant. I'll do that.
Taggert:
Just take the call, all right? What are you afraid of?
Scott
presses the speakerphone button on the phone and sits down.
Scott:
D.A. Baldwin.
Woman:
I assume Ric Lansing told you I killed Alcazar?
Scott:
Yeah, he mentioned something about it, but it's useless. The trial's
over and so are you.
Woman:
You don't believe me?
Scott:
No, I don't believe you. And even if it was Alcazar's blood,
there's no proof that it got there the night of the murder.
Woman:
There was another stab wound in Alcazar's stomach. Who would know
that except the person who killed him?
