"Black Satin Sheets"

(Sonny and Alexis are standing in front of his bar)

Alexis: You hungry?

Sonny: What would you do if I were?

Alexis: Order in. Would you like me to warm you some milk?

Sonny: You know how to make milk?

Alexis: I was hoping you did. What do you want? You want me to put you to bed?

Sonny: You're going to take me to bed?

Alexis: "Put" -- I asked if you wanted me to "put" you to bed.

Sonny: Oh. Oh, "put." What do I look like, a 2-year-old? I don't need you to take care of me, Alexis. You know, maybe just in the legal sense.

Alexis: I was being sarcastic.

Sonny: Oh.

Alexis: And speaking of a legal sense –

Sonny: Yeah.

Alexis: I’m advising you to get some sleep because you need adequate rest to make a rational decision, and I’m –

Sonny: Right.

Alexis: Emphasizing the word “rational” because a man that you hate has taken your twenty-year old sister out of the country.

Sonny: (sucking on an ice cube) I’ll find him.

Alexis: I’m sure that you will. It’s what you do when you find them that concerns me.

Sonny: I’ll bring Courtney home.

Alexis: What if Courtney doesn’t want to come home? What is A.J. has other plans?

Sonny: (walks to the couch and sits down. Alexis does the same) A.J. won’t be in a position to object to anything.

Alexis: See, and yeah, yeah – that’s because you’re exhausted, a little bit drunk.

Sonny: No.

Alexis: Which is why I can disregard what any other reasonable person would have interpreted as a threat against A.J.’s life.

Sonny: Things usually end up working the way I want them to, and if they don’t , I deal. Either way, it’s my problem, not yours. Free to bill me for this. But the problem is, I think you’re wasting my time and yours.

Alexis: So you would rather that I just go across the hall and let you drink yourself into a bigger stupor?

Sonny: Yeah.

Alexis: No problem. (Gets up from the couch and walks towards door)

Sonny: All right.

Alexis: (turns back around to face Sonny) Although, I have one –

Sonny: What now?

Alexis: Intoxication is not an acceptable defense for criminal behavior.

Sonny: Right. And who says I’m going to break the law?

Alexis: Well, then if you’re not, then you should want to hear your legal options in this situation. That way, I can swear in court that to the best of my knowledge you had every intention of working out your situation with A.J. in a legal manner.

Sonny: Alexis, (music starts) if you want to just say here, why didn’t you just say so? (Pause) Come here (Motions to her to come over to him on couch).

Sonny: (gets up from the couch and walks over to Alexis) It’s kind of sweet that you’re worried about me.

Alexis: I’m just trying to save myself a lot of work.

Sonny: You like work.

Alexis: True. But I don’t like defending violent felons and I think I made that clear to you when I first took you on a s a client.

Sonny: Yeah, yeah, you did. (rubs his right eye) But that’s cool because I’m not – you know, I’m a very non-violent person.

Alexis: Really? Well, the fact that A.J. Quartermaine happens –

Sonny: Ok, you know – forget – I don’t want to hear A.J. You don’t want to hear him, I don’t want to hear him. Let’s just not talk about him.

(There is a knock at the door)

Sonny: Could you please get that because I can’t --

Alexis: Ok. (Turns to get door. It’s Mike)

Mike: (enters the room) Look, Courtney is not at the hospital and she’s not at her mother’s place. I mean, do you have any idea where she is?

Sonny: Yeah, I’ll tell you where she is. She’s flying on a helicopter right now with A.J. Quartermaine because you couldn’t lie to her. But, see, A.J. lies all the time so he took her. You know how he took her? By telling her it’s a vacation. But you couldn’t warn her, you couldn’t protect her because you had your first ever crisis of conscience. You said you wanted to be a father. You said you wanted to protect your daughter. What happened?

Mike: I’m sorry –

Sonny: (yelling) I’m tired of hearing “I’m sorry”! After the fact! After the damage is done! (knocks over something on the desk) I’ll show you sorry! (grabs Mike by the collar) I’ll show you sorry!

(Sonny walks over to the bar. Mike follows)

Mike: You can’t have it both ways, Michael. You can’t hate me for lying to you, and then turn around and attack me for telling your sister the truth. Which way do you want it?

Sonny: I just want Courtney safe and away from A.J.

Mike: That’s the same thing I want.

Sonny: You got a strange way of showing it, Mike.

Mike: I’m doing the best I can. But you – you just can’t give anybody credit for that, can you? Including yourself. (He turns and leaves, passing Alexis on the way out)

(Sonny pours himself another drink. Alexis walks over to him)

Alexis: That wasn’t violent at all. In fact, I think you’re a real pacifist. Why don’t you pour yourself another drink?

Sonny: You want me to sleep, don’t you? It’s the only way I can – unless I’m near the ocean – I can just swim until I get tired. (takes a sip of his drink)

Alexis: Why don’t you just go upstairs, get in your bed, lie down, close your eyes and sleep like a reasonable person?

Sonny: I got a better idea. Why don’t you put me to bed?

(Sonny and Alexis are upstairs in front of Sonny’s bedroom door)

Alexis: Is this your bedroom? (points at door)

Sonny: Yeah.

Alexis: Great. Go to bed.

Sonny: Aren’t you going to help me out?

Alexis: I didn’t realize that you were incapacitated.

Sonny: (opens door) Check it out, check it out. Go ahead. (motions for her to go in ahead of him)

Alexis: It’s very nice.

Sonny: Check it out. Take a walk. Go in there, look at it.

Alexis: Very nice. (looks at a sculpture strangely and then looks at the bed)

Sonny: What do you think?

Alexis: It’s – big.

(long pause) What, do you expect me to carry you in?

Sonny: No, I think I can make it to the bed. (music starts as he begins unbuttoning his shirt) Unless you want to help me get undressed.

Alexis: No – I mean – I – I think you’re perfectly capable of doing that all by yourself.

Sonny: Well, it depends on the circumstances because sometimes I’m slow and careful and other times I just get reckless, you know what I’m saying?

Alexis: (walks away) Oh. Yeah, uh-huh.

Sonny: Well, you don’t have to walk away.

Alexis: I wasn’t walking away. I was just walking. I just felt like walking – for I did – never mind.

Sonny: (laughs) Good. All right. Oh, man. (He starts undressing. Alexis looks shocked and embarrassed) What now?

Alexis: Lie down – you lie down – alone, on your bed and close your eyes.

Sonny: I’d like to actually look.

Alexis: Wait, you can’t do that and sleep. I see you have black satin sheets.

Sonny: Yeah. They’re great for sex. (he is almost completely undressed now. He is lying on the bed)

Alexis: I’m sure they are. Just close your eyes. Ok – and just –

Sonny: You should try satin, you know what I mean?

Alexis: I will. Next time I go to the linen store. I will –

Sonny: There’s nothing better than satin sheets, I got to tell you, when you’re, like, lying under them.

Alexis: (points finger at him) Close your eyes and go to sleep (throws covers on his nearly naked body) and just go to sleep.

Sonny: Ah. (gives Alexis a sexy grin)

Alexis: (to herself) Oh, god.

(Sonny is asleep. Alexis is sitting in a chair next to the bed watching him. Sonny begins having a nightmare about being locked in the closet as a child while his mother is beaten by his stepfather, Deke)

Young Sonny: Let me out! Let me out!

Adele: Deke, no, no!

Young Sonny: Let her alone!

Deke: Shut up, you little brat! Get in there!

Adele: Don’t touch me!

Young Sonny: Stop hurting her! Stop it!

Old Sonny: I’ll kill you if you hurt her! Stop it!

Courtney: A.J., please don’t do this! I’m sorry!

(Sonny wakes up abruptly)

Alexis: Are you all right?

(Alexis is still in the chair. She gets up as Sonny pulls on his robe)

Alexis: You – ahem – had a nightmare, eh?

Sonny: Yep. I get them sometimes.

Alexis: Would it help you to tell me about it?

Sonny: No, it only really helps to drink or swim. Talking doesn’t really do much.

Alexis: I think maybe you’re right. Sometimes, naming things – defining them, analyzing things, rationalizing things – is basically pointless sometimes. You just feel what you feel.
