"You Are Going to Learn How to Wait"

Sonny and Alexis arrive back at her penthouse.

Sonny: All right, run a search on Courtney's juvenile records, make sure she has no priors. If the cops file charges, I want to know the judge's name as soon as I can. Is that all right with you?

He throws her the door keys. She catches them.

Alexis: (Sitting her coat on the chair) Please don't let this be a prelude to bribery and judicial tampering.

Sonny: Ok, I'm Courtney's brother. I have every right to know which judge is going to be deciding the case.

Alexis: Yeah, but first things first because there may be --

Sonny: Ok, yeah, first things first -- we do have to find her.

Alexis: Bad idea.

Sonny: What do you mean, bad idea? She was in a serious car accident. She's out there, you know, scared, nowhere to go. Mike is useless. Janine's only solution's going to be to run, which is only going to make things worse.

Alexis: Oh, believe me, there's more than one way to make a situation deteriorate. You need to give her some room.

Sonny: With A.J. Quartermaine looking to use my sister against me, her independence is going to have to wait. Do you understand what I'm saying? (Alexis groans) Right now I have to make sure she's safe.

Sonny grabs the phone and starts dialing.

Alexis: Will you please just listen to me and do what I say, just for once in your life?

Sonny doesn't answer her. Alexis goes to the wall and pulls the phone cord.

He loses the ringing signal and slowly turns around to Alexis.

He shakes his head.

Alexis: So far your dealings with Courtney have run the gamut from uncomfortable to horrific, and I would not be a good friend at all if I were to stand here and let you damage the relationship any further.

Sonny: My sister isn't like me or the rest of her family, and I can't say I blame her because I don't like us much, either. Now, I've been trying to do everything I can for her. You know, I let her stay with Mike, and what does he do? He puts her up in a hotel two floors away from A.J. Quartermaine.

Alexis: And then when you tried to intervene, she ran away and got herself into a car accident. (She walks past Sonny)

Sonny: Ok, you know what? I hope you're not saying I'm responsible.

Alexis: No, I'm --

Sonny: Ok.

Alexis: Simply saying that she has a driver's license, so I'm assuming that she knows to stop at a red light. What she doesn't know is to trust you because she thinks that you're angry, intimidating, and that all you do is try to tell her what to do.

Sonny: So it would have been better if I left her with Mike, let him fill her head with useless excuses and promises that only last until the next time he's broke? Or should I have done what Janine wanted, just pay her off so, you know, she could send her off to college? That way I'd never see my sister again. Would that have been better?

Alexis: Do you want to be separated from your sister?

Sonny: Well -- it looks like I have no choice, you know, if you ask you. I have no choice, right?

Alexis: I'm just saying that I think that you're both going about it the wrong way. I think that relationships take time, all relationships -- my relationship with you. Your relationship with me, it took time, didn't it?

Sonny: What am I supposed to do?

Alexis: Acquire a skill that the rest of the people on this planet have acquired.

Sonny: Acquire it from who?

Alexis: (She looks behind herself) Well, since I seem to be the only tutor available at the moment, brace yourself because you are going to learn how to wait.

He just stares at her.

Sonny is cutting paper. Alexis walks in from the kitchen with two coffee mugs.

Sonny: What makes you think I don't know how to wait?

She turns and looks. He shows her his "skill" and dances his paper dolls from side to side with a smile.

Alexis: At the moment, any number of events springs to mind.

They sit down.

Sonny: Well, I waited to -- I waited to get you as my lawyer. (He smirks) The first time we met, you said you would never represent me. It took, what, years and how many wrongful arrests before you'd give in. And then it was only on a case-to-case basis. I bet you've been on retainer to me less than 1/10 of the time I've known you.

Alexis: Please, please don't brag about how you sucked me in and used my principles against me.

Sonny: Well, I'm just saying that, you know, I can be pretty damn patient when it comes to something that I want.

Alexis: Do you want a relationship with your sister?

Sonny: Bad enough to let you teach me how to wait, so go ahead.

Alexis: Really?

Sonny: Yeah! Just teach -- teach away. How do we do it? How do we pass the time? Should we, you know, find an activity --

Alexis: Sure.

Sonny: To distract us?

Alexis: Yeah, let's do that.

Sonny: Right.

Alexis: (Reaching across the coffee table) How about a nice little magazine here. It's not incumbent that you read it. It's --

Sonny: Right.

Alexis: The purpose is for you to find some pointless repetitious activity.

Sonny: Well, I like activities (throws the magazine back on the coffee table) with a purpose.

Alexis: Then drum your fingers. Some people find that enjoyable.

Sonny: Not me.

Alexis: All right, let's pace. (She stands up) Everybody enjoys (pulls him up) pacing. I like to pace. You'll like it, too.

Sonny: We'd bump into each other.

Alexis: Fine, then pace yourself.

Sonny: No, thank you.

Alexis: Popcorn.

Sonny: Cards. Poker.

Alexis: Oh.

Sonny: Five -- yeah, let's play some --

Alexis: You want to gamble.

Sonny: Well, I mean, it beats, you know, talking. Unless, you know, you want to talk. Ok, we'll talk. So, why don't we start by you telling me what you meant when you said our relationship took time. What exactly is our relationship?

Alexis: You know. I mean -- I hated you --

Sonny: Mm-hmm.

Alexis: And then I didn't hate you as much, and then I would hate you again, and then you would do something redeemable, and then you'd do something that I would find appalling, and then -

He shakes

Sonny: Then what?

She just stares at him.

They sit back on the couch.

Alexis: On any given day, my feelings for you range from genuine warmth to complete exasperation to outright loathing, and since I'm not by nature a changeable person, I would have to say that's because of (points to him) you.

Sonny: Oh.

Alexis: In two seconds flat, you can go from jaw-droppingly noble to ice cold and ruthless.

He nods.

Alexis: But there are things that I really like about you. And there are things that I find really appalling about you. But for the most part, the good outweighs the bad, but that could be, of course, because of the exorbitant amount of money that you pay me.

Sonny: (Batting his eyes) You're worth every penny.

Alexis: Thank you for realizing that.

Sonny: After all, who else could do such a terrific job at teaching me to wait? And while you're at it, why don't you go ahead and teach me, you know, some other things.

Alexis: Like what?

Sonny: Anything you think I should know.

Kristina opens the door and walks in without realizing Sonny is there.

Kristina: I must be cosmically mis-aligned because every time I open my mouth to speak, somebody gets hurt or somebody gets offended or - (she sees Sonny) Sonny. Well, I didn't expect to see you here.

Sonny: Here I am.

Alexis: (To Sonny) Goody, because one of the cardinal rules about learning how to wait is that the more people participating, the easier it is to pass the time. (Getting up) I'll go make popcorn.

Kristina: What are we waiting for?

Alexis: (Turn around to Sonny) He'll fill you in.

Alexis goes into the kitchen to make popcorn.

Kristina: Ahem. Hi. I'm assuming that you didn't tell Alexis that I said that she loved you.

He shakes his head while unbuttoning the top three buttons of his shirt.

Kristina: Ok. Good. Good, (sits down) because -- well, the truth is that I asked her about it this morning, and turns out that I was wrong. I was completely wrong about it.

Sonny: Really?

Kristina: Yeah. 100% incorrect. I mean, she does like you, you know, as a friend, as a client, but, you know, I should've known. But the truth is that -- remember, I met Alexis just this past year, so my judgment calls are not 100% accurate yet. So turns out you're completely the wrong guy for her. I'm relieved.

Sonny: "The wrong guy"? What does that mean?

Kristina: You're not exactly your typical businessman, Sonny. Come on. On top of which, you're involved in this ghost marriage with your ex-wife that keeps coming back to haunt people. So it's a damn good thing Alexis isn't in love with you because you'd probably end up hurting her.

Sonny: You know what, Kristina? I admire you because you're looking out for your sister, and I'd do the same with mine if she'd let me.

Kristina: Now, wait -- wait a second. I think that you're missing my point here.

Sonny: No, no, look. The point is you want to protect Alexis. So do I. End of discussion.

Kristina: Right. But the nicer you are to her --

Sonny: Ok, you know what? You know what? You look a little tired. Why don't you go ahead and go to bed? (He bats his eyes)

Kristina: Yeah, you're right, Sonny. I'm exhausted. You tell Alexis that I'll wait with her some other time.

Kristina leaves. Sonny pulls out his cell phone as Alexis walks in with a bowl of popcorn.

Alexis: Who you calling?

Sonny: Benny.

He puts the phone away and she sits down.

Alexis: Have some popcorn instead. Where's Kristina?

Sonny: She went to bed.

Alexis: Hmm. I heard you guys talking.

Sonny: We were.

Alexis: What were you talking about?

Sonny: You.

He shakes his head and smiles and then sips his coffee.

They are feasting on popcorn.

Alexis: You were talking about me with my sister?

Sonny: You discuss me with mine.

Alexis: Well, that's because I was interceding with Courtney on your behalf. Kristina and I don't need that kind of help. We're fine.

Sonny: Oh.

Alexis: I think. What were you two talking about?

Sonny: Well, we were just discussing whether it's safe for you to be around me.

Courtney shows up on AJ's door much to his delight. She asks for the envelope with the check in it. He figures something is wrong and she breaks down. He wraps his arms around her and ask her to tell him what's going on because he's her "friend". She tells him all about the accident and how no one believes her and that Gia and Nikolas have gotten her cop brother after her. AJ puts on his concerned friend face and offers to help her any way he can. She says she's concerned about Elizabeth and if she's ok but no one will tell her anything. AJ tells her that he's a good liar and calls the hospital pretending to be a doctor to get an update. Elizabeth has been moved to stable condition. She then tells him she's leaving town and asks for $40 for cab fare since there isn't a bank open to cash the check. White Knight to the rescue, he offers her his Mercedes for her to drive. He tells her to just call him and he'll have it picked up whenever she gets to where she's going. Courtney is stunned.

Zander and Carly are driving outside of town when Zander stops the car and tells Carly to get out. She is mortified and refuses. She wants to know what's going on. Zander tells her to trust him. When they get out he puts her in the driver's seat and begins to teach her how to drive. Since Carly hasn't the faintest idea but has brought up the situation more than once, Zander feels it's the least he can do. Carly panics and doesn't think she can go through with it. After so coaxing from Zander, she decides to try. He's teaching her on a stick shift no less! She does pretty well actually until she sees a car accident and freezes. When Zander comes back after finding out what happened he fills Carly in. Two teenagers in a sports car, someone ran a light. She zones out for a little bit and then her mood changes and she wants to go home immediately. Zander agrees to take her there and wonders what has gotten her so scared. Back at the house, Carly tells him the story of her best friend in high school and how her name was Carly and that's how she took on the name. She says that she was killed in a car accident when a drunk driver hit them. That's why she hasn't drove before. But there's more and Zander pleads with her to tell him and let it out. Carly says she's never told anyone before, not even Sonny but she'll try to tell him.
