"I'm Sorry"

Alexis turns away from Sonny and walks right for her door.

Sonny: Can I come in?

Alexis: How bad is it?

Sonny: Well, that depends.

Alexis: Catastrophic? (She can't get her door unlocked) Because you know what? I'm going to bill you starting now, and I'm going to keep going for the rest of your life.

Sonny: (Reaching for her door) Ok, do you need some help?

Alexis: (Nudging him away and still struggling with the door) I don't need any help! I don't need any help. I just need a new lock because this one just jams all the time. Unlike the original one I had before you had that blown off my door last summer.

Sonny: Well, I can just call a locksmith --

Alexis: I don't want a locksmith. I don't want a bodyguard from you. I don't want anyone associated with you, all right? (Still struggling) I just, unfortunately, am your counsel for the record, so that's not an option. Who has been arrested? (She pulls the key out)

Sonny: No one.

Alexis: (She puts the key back in and tries some more) We can't discuss it out here because anything that's said is admissible in court.

Sonny: Well, this isn't business. Um -- it's - (touching her arm) it's personal.

She stops and looks at him.

Sonny: About as personal as it gets.

Alexis is still struggling with the door lock. Sonny reaches out.

Sonny: Ok, can I just try? Please?

Alexis backs away and Sonny fusses with the key. He stops.

Sonny: Ok, go ahead, try it.

He moves away and she walks to the door. She touches the knob with a finger and pushes the door. It opens.

She looks over to him.

He walks in in front of her. She tries to get the key out of the lock but can't.

He walks back to the door and yanks the key out. He throws her the key and she slams the door shut. He walks over to the fireplace.

Alexis: (Walking toward him) You know -- ahem -- there's really no point in dragging this out, all right? You were wrong -- not about firing Zander because that's probably the best thing that has ever happened to Zander. And you didn't fire him to save him. You fired him to punish him because he dared to tell you the truth.

Sonny: (Sitting down) I was punishing Zander for telling Carly the truth.

Alexis: That -- you see, that is just pathetic.

Sonny: Oh. Is it?

Alexis: You have the most vicious double standards I have ever encountered in a lifetime of dealing with questionable people. You won't lie to Carly, but you'll order someone to lie to Carly for you. You won't tell your sister about the hell you lived through all your life, but you will punish your father relentlessly for allowing it to happen.

Sonny: That's right. (He turns away)

Alexis: You have an impossible code to live up to. It's not because you expect people to meet them but because you don't. I mean, you can't wait to push people away. You can't wait for people to screw up, and it's sad, it's destructive. It is. But, you know, apparently --

Sonny: I'm sorry. I'm - (Whispering) I'm sorry.

She sits down next to him and grins victoriously out of the side of her mouth.

Alexis: What did you say?

Sonny: (Looking away) I said I'm sorry.

Alexis: For firing Zander?

Sonny: For -- for everything.

Alexis: Define "everything."

Sonny: (He puts his face in his hand in frustration) You know what? I -- I know better than to make assumptions. I mean, you know, simple things (he looks at her) can get complicated if you don't pay attention -- like with you.

Alexis: Ah -- whoa. You know, I'm not the boy you fired, and I am not the sister that you bullied. You have a whole long list of people-related problems. I'm not one of them.

Sonny: You're important to me, Alexis. Ok? And I have not been listening to really what you're saying.

Alexis: To what?

Sonny: Do you under-- to what? To, you know, what you say, how you say it. The expression on your face when you say things.

Alexis: My face -- the expression on my face? What does the expression on my face have to do with anything?

Sonny: Well, because I haven't really --

Just then Kristina walks in.

Kristina: Alexis, why did you leave the gym so fast? I really wanted to talk to you about some-

She suddenly notices Sonny sitting with Alexis.

Alexis and Sonny stand up.

Sonny: Hi, Kristina.

Kristina: Sonny, what -- what are you doing here? (Alexis looks at Sonny) I mean, not that -- not that you don't have full right to be here. I mean, you are -- you know, Alexis is your attorney, and you know you do pay her a lot of money for her to be your attorney, so --

Sonny: Alexis is an excellent attorney.

Alexis: Ok. Now that we've all agreed on my professional expertise, we're in the middle of something right now.

Kristina: Nothing too serious, I hope.

Sonny: No, everything's fine.

Kristina: Oh. Ok. Great. Then I will let you get back into it -- I mean, into your business that you were doing. I'm going to be upstairs.

Kristina nervously runs upstairs.

Sonny: Your sister seems a little high-strung, don't you think?

Alexis: I hardly think you're qualified to make that comment.

She starts walking toward the desk and he follows.

Sonny: Well, I'm just saying that, you know, sometimes she seems like she doesn't think clearly. (Alexis puts a file in the drawer) Like, you know, she gets going on this metaphysical stuff, like one time she dragged me out into the hall and started telling me about this -- you know, this monkey story or -- (Alexis looks at him) what I'm trying to say, I mean, does she ever, like, say things that don't quite make sense to you?

Alexis: She may be a little overly enthusiastic, you know, and tend to draw unique, if not completely inaccurate, conclusions about things, but she's hardly deluded. Is she?

Sonny: Well, I don't know. I mean, I don't -- I don't know her that well to make that judgment. She just seems a little excitable.

Alexis: How you can accuse anyone of being excitable is beyond my comprehension.

Sonny: Well, I mean, I do have a temper. We all know that.

Alexis: That's an understatement.

Sonny: But I already apologized.

Alexis: Well, you could do better.

Sonny: A better apology?

Alexis: No, you could deal with your emotions in a more productive manner.

Sonny: Oh, say what I feel, don't get mad?

Alexis: That's the general idea, yes.

Sonny: Yeah, ok. You first.

Alexis: Me?

Sonny: Yeah, you. Yeah. You know, you were in my apartment for an hour, telling me how you were going to tell me how you felt, and you didn't. Do it now.

Alexis: I feel that you are a domineering, chauvinistic, morally bankrupt criminal (leaning in with a facetious smile) with a great deal of personal charm. Which you exploit on a regular basis to get people to do things that they would never do for you under any circumstances whatsoever.

He nods and models and adoring grin as she continues to ramble

Alexis: But you have a great heart, and one, two, maybe three times a year you actually choose to show that. The rest of the time you're mildly enjoyable to deal with, when you're not being a complete nightmare. Anything else?

Sonny: I like you, too.

Alexis: Good. Good night.

She steps away toward the couch.

Sonny: Oh, yeah. One more thing --

Alexis: (Turning to him) I'm billing you for this.

Sonny: I get now that whatever you say to me is coming from a good place.

Alexis: (She smiles) Well, I'm glad that you noticed that. (Turning serious) You're still not getting a discount.

Sonny laughs. He shoots her a wink.

Sonny: Good night.

Alexis: (Shooting back at him) Good night.

Sonny: (Laughing) Hey, hey.

Alexis: Hey, hey.

He walks out the door and Alexis looks curiously at it.

Sonny leans against her door outside.

A little later Kristina comes downstairs. Alexis is sitting on the couch eating popcorn and looking over a file. Kristina looks around and sees that Sonny is gone.

Kristina: So, Sonny's gone?

Alexis: Mm-hmm. He left a little while ago. You want some popcorn?

Kristina: Oh, no, thanks. Are you all right?

Alexis: Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?

Kristina: No reason. No reason. You know, Sonny just seemed kind of moody today.

Kristina sits down.

Alexis: Sonny is always moody. You just don't cave into the big, brown puppy-dog eyes, and then eventually he apologizes.

Kristina: Sonny apologized to you?

Alexis: Astonishing, isn't it?

Kristina: Do you have any idea why?

Alexis: Sonny doesn't explain himself. He just does what he wants, and apparently today he felt like apologizing to me.

Kristina: Oh. And that's all?

Alexis: That's it.

Kristina: God, I thought you were going to hate me.

Alexis: Hate you for what?

Sonny goes to Club 101 where Zander and Carly are working. Sonny said he asked Zander to make sure Carly didn't do anything crazy. He said he doesn't agree with what Zander did but he appreciates his honesty. He says he's proud of him and he can have his job back.

Alexis: Why would I hate you?

Kristina: Well, not "hate," exactly. I mean, "hate" is such a final word. Fury, maybe. Outrage.

Alexis: What could you have possibly done that would outrage me? You walked into the apartment. You live here. It's not a problem. Although you did walk in without having any problem with the lock, which jams for me every time, which is annoying.

Kristina: Alexis --

Alexis: What?

Kristina: When Sonny blew up at you, I went over to his apartment, and I'm sorry, I just couldn't control myself. I reamed him out for his arrogant attitude, and before I knew it, I was telling him --

Alexis: Good for you! Good for you. He deserves that. You know, he's got a big ego. It's a reality check. (Hands her the bowl) Have some popcorn.

Kristina: The thing is, is that I just said some things that I probably shouldn't have. I stuck my nose in your business.

Alexis: You're my sister. You're my sister. You were defending me. How could I be outraged at that? In fact, I love you for it.

Alexis hugs a scared Kristina.
