"The Smartest Thing I Ever Did was Hire You"

Alexis: Courtney, my client would like the opportunity to get to know you better, and he's willing to provide you with appropriate accommodations for as long as you choose to stay in Port Charles.

Courtney: Your client?

Sonny: This is my attorney, Alexis Davis.

Alexis: Hi.

Janine: Do me a favor and don't try to intimidate us with your lawyer. Courtney and I are leaving tonight.

Sonny: Is that what you want?

Courtney: It doesn't matter that you're supposed to be my brother. You don't know anything about me.

Sonny: I know how easy Mike is to love and how hard it is to find out that his love counts for nothing.

Courtney: Daddy didn't say anything about me?

Sonny: No.

Courtney: Then maybe we should leave it that way. My mom wants to go.

Sonny: Running is Mike's way out. You're stronger than that.

Courtney: How do you know?

Sonny: You went to the Quartermaines' tonight, right, and you told the truth. You did what you had to do to clean up your mother's mess. That told me a lot.

Janine: Courtney and I are leaving tonight.

Sonny: She has other options now.

Janine: She doesn't want any part of you.

Sonny: Why don't you let her answer for herself, Janine.

Alexis: Sonny doesn't have an agenda here. In fact, he's gone to a considerable amount of trouble on your behalf.

Courtney: By walking out five minutes after he met me?

Sonny: I'm here now.

Courtney: You still haven't given me a reason. Is it to get back at m-- our dad? I mean, it's obvious you don't like him much.

Sonny: I have no use for mike after what he did to you, but I had no use for him anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Courtney: When you walked out, you looked right through him the same way you looked right through me.

Sonny: I saw you, Courtney.

Courtney: Maybe. But you sure as hell didn't seem to care about me.

Janine: All right, there's her answer. Courtney's going with me.

Courtney: No, no, I am not. I would rather sleep on the streets than stay with either one of you.

Alexis: Courtney, can I speak with you for a moment? Maybe I can give you just a little perspective.

Janine: I think she's had all the perspective she needs from you people.

Alexis: Before you decide to do anything, how about just five minutes?

Courtney: All right. Five minutes.

Sonny: You didn't have to work very hard to get Courtney away from Mike because she knew from the gate he wouldn't go looking for her. But I will. And I'm telling you right now, don't even bother trying to disappear in the middle of the night.

Janine: You're a cold one, aren't you? Courtney was right when she said that you could look at a person like they weren't even there. And if they don't like it, what do you do? You send in your lawyer to fix everything.

Sonny: Alexis is trying to help Courtney.

Janine: By putting the screws to her?

Sonny: That's not what this is about and you know it.

Alexis: As Sonny's attorney, it is my job to argue in his best interests, which would be persuading you to stay. And as his friend, I'm asking you to stay. Legally, personally, you can do whatever you choose.

Courtney: Ok.

Alexis: Here's my card. You can call the bar association and have me checked out. They'll tell you I'm honest and in good standing.

Courtney: Maybe I will -- tomorrow.

Alexis: In the meantime, Sonny does not have an ulterior motive. He doesn't need you to make him rich, he doesn't need you to make him powerful, he doesn't even need you to make him punish Mike because he's perfectly capable of doing that all by himself. He just wants to get to know you, Courtney. And I would imagine you want to get to know him as well.

Courtney: I don't even think he likes me.

Alexis: Well, if you run away, how are you ever going to find that out?

Courtney: I'm not going to stay with a stranger.

Alexis: You don't have to stay with Sonny. You can stay with your mom or he can put you up at a hotel. My sister and I live right across the hall. You can stay with us.

Courtney: I'm sure your sister would be thrilled.

Alexis: My sister probably would be thrilled. She's a cool person.

Courtney: Is she a lawyer, too?

Alexis: No. She's a jack-of-all-trades. She's been all over the world. My sister and I were separated for a long time. And us coming back together was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. If you give Sonny a chance, you might be able to find that out.

Courtney: Are you sure your sister wouldn't mind?

Alexis: I'm positive. She'll probably think of this as some sort of karmic destiny. You'll like her. Everybody does.

Courtney: All right. I'll take you up on the offer -- for now.

Alexis: For now.

Alexis: This is my apartment. I have a copy of the lease if you'd like proof that I live here. And you should know that this not a ruse to trick your daughter into staying with sonny.

Janine: Ah. Yeah, I'll see a copy of the lease.

Courtney: Please, Mom. Will you give it a rest? I'll be fine. Just go.

Janine: All right, but come here and give me a hug. Good night, baby.

Courtney: Good night.

Sonny: Ok. Let Johnny know if you need anything.

Janine: I can't believe I'm doing this. It's not like I have any choice or anything. You pretty much get whatever you want, don't you?

Sonny: Why wouldn't I want to protect my sister?

Alexis: The kitchen is that way, not that you'll find anything in it. I don't cook. We order out of here. And the bedrooms are upstairs.

Courtney: You do that a lot.

Sonny: Do what?

Courtney: Eavesdrop.

Sonny: Oh. Eavesdroppers hide. I was standing right in the doorway.

Courtney: Ok, then. You sneak up on people and listen without them knowing.

Sonny: I'm polite. I try not to interrupt.

Courtney: And if you happen to hear some private information, that's just a fringe benefit, right?

Sonny: Well, the nuns always told me that good manners would, you know, give me an easy life. Are you hungry? Would you like -- you want me to cook you something?

Courtney: Uh -- I'm pretty tired. All I want is to go to bed. Upstairs?

Alexis: Yeah, second door on your right.

Courtney: I'll find it.

Alexis: Ok.

Courtney: Thanks for letting me stay.

Alexis: You're welcome, Courtney.

Sonny: The smartest thing I ever did was hire you.

Alexis: Happy New Year.

Sonny: Happy New Year.
