Chapter

Alexis
awoke to the smell of food. She opened her eyes and blinked a couple
of times.
"Were
am I?" she mumbled, as she looked around and realized she was
on the couch in the living room. Alone. Sonny had been here with
her last night. They must have fallen asleep.
Alexis
could hear Sonny's voice in the kitchen. She quietly walked to the
door and peeked inside. Sonny sat at the kitchen table, Kristopher
on his left, Kristina on his right.
Kristopher
held his cup out to Sonny.
"What
do you want?" Sonny asked.
Kristopher
shoved the cup at Sonny again.
"I
distinctly recall your mother saying that you had to ask with words,"
Sonny said very tenderly. "Tell me what you want."
"Juice,
please," Kristopher said, again holding the cup out for Sonny
as he gave him a dimpled grin.
"Very
good," Sonny said as he displayed matching dimples.
Sonny
took the glass, refilled it and handed it back to the boy.
"Why
do we have to be quiet again?" Kristina asked.
"Because
your Mommy is asleep on the couch. She had a very long day yesterday
so we are being nice and letting her sleep," Sonny responded.
"Why
didn't she just sleep in her bed?" Kristina inquired as Kristopher
shook his head, in agreement with his sister question.
"Did
anyone ever tell you...you talk too much," Sonny asked with
a big smile.
"My
Mama tells me all the time," Kristina said proudly.
"You
are definitely your mother's daughter," Sonny said as he patted
her head. She displayed her own set of dimples, almost identical
to her mother's.
Kristopher
tapped Sonny on the shoulder.
"Yes?"
Sonny asked.
"Gape
jelly?" Kristopher asked, holding a slice of toast out to Sonny.
"All
right...I think we are getting somewhere...your mother is going
to be so proud of you," he said with a smile. "Now if
only I can keep up with the good things and don't teach you anything
bad."
"Mama,"
Kristina said as she saw Alexis standing in the doorway to the kitchen.
Alexis
had been watching Sonny with his children, their children. She couldn't
help but smile. The dream she had many times in the last three years
was coming true before her eyes - Sonny making breakfast for his
children, like he had made for her the morning after their conception.
"Hello there," Sonny said. "Sleep well?"
"Actually...I
did," she said as she bent to place kisses on the foreheads
of her children.
"Sonny
made us breakfast. It's even better than Maria's breakfast,”
Kristina said.
"Your
mama's always enjoyed my cooking," Sonny responded with a full
dimpled smile, as he poured Alexis a cup of coffee and handed it
to her.
"Omelet?"
he questioned.
"That
would be wonderful," she responded.
"You
know. you two really need to thank Sonny," Alexis said. "If
it weren't for him, we would be having cold cereal for breakfast
this morning since Maria went to visit Mrs. Landsbury."
"Thank
you...Mama can't cook...she burns things," Kristina offered.
"Some
things never change," Sonny said with a chuckle.
"Hey...hey...how
come it seems like they always side with you," Alexis asked
in mock horror.
"Maybe
we just know you better," Sonny whispered as he glanced at
Alexis and gave her a small smile.
"Why
did you stay last night?" Kristina looked to Sonny and then
to Alexis for an answer.
"Because
it was late," Alexis began.
"The
only people who visit us are Cousin Nicklas and Uncle Stefffan,"
Kristina said.
"That's
right baby," Alexis said. "Sonny is a friend."
"You
said that our daddy was a friend," Kristina stated, adding
"I'm not a baby."
"Yeah
I did," Alexis laughed softly as she looked at Sonny.
It
had been less than 24 hours since he had re-entered her life and
it felt like they had never been apart.
Alexis
knew what was coming next. She wasn't going to have to tell the
twins. Kristina was going to do it for her. She said a little prayer
that the effort she had made telling the children about their father
would make this moment one of sweetness not sorrow.
Alexis
saw Sonny's face go from carefree and happy to tense and uncertain.
Alexis
nodded her head at Sonny letting him know she thought this was going
to be okay.
"You
said that Kristopher looked like Daddy," Kristina stated, as
she looked over at Sonny. "Kristopher and Sonny both have dimples.
"And,
so do you," Alexis told the little girl.
"Yeah...but...I
have your dimples,"she said showing them off.
"That
you do, sweetheart," Alexis answered with a matching smile.
"Do
you love us, Sonny?" Kristina questioned.
"Yeah,
I do...I don't see how anyone that meets you doesn't love you,"
Sonny responded quietly.
"Mama
said our daddy loves us," Kristina stated.
Kristina
crawled from her chair and carefully walked over to Sonny.
"Are
you Daddy?" Kristina asked, as she looked up at him.
Kristopher
had been sitting quietly, glancing back and forth between his sister
and the adults.
"Daddy?"
Kristopher asked with a questioning look.
Sonny
knelt in front of Kristina and placed the palm of his hand on her
cheek as tears filled his eyes.
"Come
here, Kristopher," Sonny said as he reached out to his son.
Kristopher
climbed from his chair and walked over to Sonny.
Alexis
stood behind Sonny, with her hand on his shoulder.
"Yes,
my loves," Alexis whispered. "This is your Daddy."
Sonny
gathered both of his children in his arms and hugged them close
to him.
"Yes...I'm
your Daddy," Sonny said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I'm
here...and I'm never gonna leave you again."
"See
Kristopher...I knew he would come," Kristina told her brother
confidently. "What took you so long?"
Sonny
and Alexis couldn't help but laugh at their daughter.
Sonny
stood and took Kristina in his arms. He placed a kiss on her forehead
and handed her to Alexis. He then bent down and picked up Kristopher
and placed a kiss on his forehead. He held his arm out to Alexis
and pulled her close into a hug.
"Daddy's
here," Sonny whispered to his new found family. "And it's
all gonna be okay."
And
it was.
