Chapter 5

Alexis sat quietly in the car on the trip home. She really wished they had talked before she had eaten lunch. She was sure she could have handled things better on an empty stomach. It was bad enough when she had a knot in her stomach and a lump in her throat...but add food and you had a good bit of nausea.

How was she going to tell Sonny that the only woman he ever trusted had lied to him? That his one-time best friend, who knew how much he had wanted a child of his own, had kept hidden the fact that she had given birth to not one, but two of his children.

"A part of me still hopes that I will wake up from this nightmare," Alexis mumbled to herself.

Alexis felt the car come to an abrupt stop. She looked over at Sonny and realized she had just said out loud what she had been thinking.

She recognized a deep hurt on his face and then saw the tears springing from his eyes.

"What? You think this is a nightmare?" Sonny choked out. "I'm...I'm sorry, Alexis...I didn't mean to make you feel that way. You're right...three years is a long time. You've started your life over and here I am trying to hone in on it. Please forgive me. I'll drop you off at your villa...you will never see me again. I'm very sorry."

"God no Sonny!" Alexis said, her voice thick with emotion, as a single tear escaped from her eye and scorched her cheek. "You said things today that a part of me always wanted to hear. My problem isn't with you. It's with me. It's what I've done. I'm so afraid of what you will think of me when you find out."

"Alexis, we've always shared things with each other that we could never tell another soul. I've never judged you. I've just been there for you. I want to do that again. I can do that again..."

"I'm not sure, Sonny. Some of the things I've done will hurt you…I'm not sure you will ever forgive me."

"Alexis...I never thought I was good enough for you...and I wasn't. When I realized I wanted and needed you in my life, I became a better man so I could be worthy of you. If I can do that we can get through anything."

"Sonny...I don't think the person I've become is worthy of the person you've become..."

"Alexis...STOP...I will not listen to you say those things about yourself. I saw you with your daughter. She's beautiful. She loves you. You love her. You are not a bad person...now let's go...I want to meet your son...if he's anything like your daughter..."

"Okay," Alexis responded quietly as she let out the breath she realized she had been holding.

Alexis and Sonny walked through the front door of the villa. Sonny had barely closed the door when he heard Kristina bounding down the hall toward them.

"Mommy...Mommy...we went to the beach...we played in the sand...Kristopher ate sand but Maria washed his mouth out...Can we go back to the beach again Mommy? Will you come with us tomorrow, Mommy?"

"Kristina...shhh...one question at a time."

"There's no doubt that she's your daughter, Alexis," Sonny laughed as he walked to the couch and took a seat.

"Very funny," Alexis responded. "Kristina, where is your brother?"

"He's in his room. We just got up from our naps that you said we had to take to stay up late...He's being lazy...Since we took a nap we still get stay up with you and watch a movie...and have popcorn? Right Mommy?" Kristina rambled. "You promised."

"If I stay up to watch a movie," Alexis answered with a sigh, though she wasn't sure what was going to happen after Sonny realized the truth.

"Hi," Kristina said to Sonny.

"Hello again, Kristina..." he answered softly.

"Did you go to lunch with my Mommy?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because your Mommy is a friend of mine."

"I'll leave you two to get acquainted while I go get the other one for you to meet," Alexis nervously said to Sonny.

"Uh...Alexis...does he ask as many questions as she does?" Sonny asked as he pointed to Kristina.

"He doesn't talk a whole lot," Kristina answered before Alexis had a chance. "I usually know what he wants and I tell Mommy for him."

"I bet you do," Sonny smiled.

"She's really pretty harmless, Sonny," Alexis laughed as she walked out of the room.

"If I survived her mother all those years, I think I can survive her," he said, a broad smile crossing his face.

As Alexis walked out of the room she watched as Kristina crawled up on the sofa next to him. She watched as Sonny brushed back the hair that had fallen in her face. She offered up a silent prayer to God that Sonny could forgive her sin and that he would be an important part of her children's lives, their children's lives.

As Alexis walked into Kristopher's room she saw him laying on top of the comforter with his head resting on the pillow, his stuffed teddy bear under his arm.

When he saw his mother enter the room he sat up on the bed. Her heart melted when he displayed those dimples he could only have inherited from his father.

"Hello, Little One. Did you have a good nap?" Alexis asked softly. Kristopher nodded his head, causing his mop of black curls to bounce.

Alexis sat down on the bed and Kristopher crawled into her lap. He placed his head up under her chin and cuddled his body into her chest. She couldn't help but hug him close to her.

"Little One?" Alexis called.

Kristopher crawled up facing her. He placed is forehead against hers. "I love you so much. You are my heart and soul...Do you know that?" she laughed softly.

The little boy just looked at her and smiled.

Alexis hugged her son tightly against her.

"Well...It's now or never..."Alexis said softly as she kissed the boy on the forehead.

"How would you like to go meet your father?"

"Carry?" Kristopher stated as Alexis bent to put him down.

"Okay, Little One...I will carry you."

Kristopher once again tucked his head up under Alexis' chin and snuggled into her chest.

As Alexis re-entered the living room she saw that Sonny was still caught up in conversation with Kristina. As she walked over to the couch and took a seat next to him, she sat Kristopher down in her lap.

"Sonny, I'd like you to meet Kristopher," she said softly, her voice cracking with emotion.

Kristopher shyly tucked his face in his mother's shirt. And then he pulled away, looked directly at Sonny and displayed those dimples for all to see.

Alexis heard Sonny gasp and she held her breath as Sonny looked into a face almost identical to the one he saw when he looked in the mirror.

"I don't understand?" Sonny whispered in shock as a look of confusion crossed his face.

"Sonny...Kristopher is Kristina's younger brother by two minutes...they are twins. They were born on New Years Eve 2002."

"You asked me if I ever think about you," she quietly stated as a single tear scorched her cheek. "And after you've met Kristopher, I ask you, how can I not?"
