Chapter 1

April 2006

Alexis stood at the desk in the Puerto Rican villa she had rented for a much needed vacation. "Vacation...right..." she thought to herself as she placed some legal documents in her briefcase.

It had been a vacation until Stefan had called her requesting that she look over the contracts on a last minute deal that he put together for one of the many Cassadine holdings. Why couldn't she just say no to her brother just once in her life. "You're the only one I trust completely" and "I only have the future of the newest generation of Cassadines in mind" were the lines that reeled her in. Not to mention the renewed commitment she had made to her family several years earlier.

The truth was, the work was really a much-needed distraction. How she ever thought she could come to Puerto Rico without remembering the last time she had been here, more than four years ago, she did not know.

Alexis closed her briefcase and smiled as her young daughter bounded into the room.

"Mommy...aren't you going to go to the beach with us...you went to the beach with us yesterday...you said we could go to the beach again today...please Mommy...can't you come too..." the three-year-old rambled.

"Kristina...please...I explained to you that I have to take care of some paperwork for Uncle Stefan...I can't go with you to the beach this afternoon but I promise that I will go tomorrow," Alexis said while pushing a piece of the little girl's straight, shoulder length, chestnut hair behind her ear.

"Go to your room and get your things ready for the beach and then go into the kitchen. Maria is preparing your lunch. Then she will take you to the beach," Alexis explained to the little girl.

"Okay..." Kristina answered as she turned and began to walk toward the hallway. She stopped abruptly and turned around. "No nap today, Mama," the little girl stated emphatically.

"Yes, nap today," Alexis stated sternly.

"But I'm a big girl. I don't want to take a nap," Kristina stated, poking her bottom lip out and stomping her feet.

Alexis cringed. This little girl may look like her but she sure had her father's temper. Reasoning with the child worked at times, and when it didn't she resorted to bribery. Alexis couldn't help but see the irony in this considering the girl's parentage.

"Big girls that want to stay up late, watch a movie and eat popcorn with their mothers have to take naps," Alexis stated.

"Okay," Kristina agreed.

"Now go," Alexis told the little girl, as she placed her hands on her shoulders and turned her back in the direction of her room.

Alexis placed her briefcase by the front door and was going to go into the kitchen to tell Maria she was leaving when there was a knock at the door.

"I wonder who that is?" she mumbled to herself. "I hope Kristina hasn't been ordering room service again."

"Can I help you..." Alexis began as she opened the door. As her eyes met the dark eyes of the man at the door she froze. She blinked her eyes shut. This can't be. She was seeing things. She had to be seeing things. She opened her eyes again and was greeted with his full dimpled grin.

"Hey," he said.

"Sonny..." she stated in disbelief. Not only could she not believe that Sonny was standing at her door. It had been over three years. She couldn't believe that those dimples still had the same effect on her. Who was she kidding. She knew exactly why those dimples still got to her...

"Aren't you going to invite me in?" he asked, still flashing that thousand watt smile.

"I was actually on my way out...for lunch...in a few minutes...I just had a few more things to do...I'm sorry," Alexis stammered.

Sonny chuckled. "I never thought I'd say this, but I sure missed your rambling."

"I..." Alexis didn't know what to say. Her mind was racing. Sonny was here. At her door. In Puerto Rico. With the secret she had managed to keep from him for over three years in the other room. The fear began as a knot in her stomach and spread throughout her body. Why was he here? What did he want? Did he know? She saw no hint of anger in his eyes. The questions continued to fly through her head. "Don't panic Alexis...just breathe...oh...my...God....!"

"Can I buy you lunch, please," Sonny asked. "It's been a long time, Alexis, but it seems like only yesterday...I...my life has changed so much since you left Port Charles...I just want to catch up...I miss not having you to talk to."

"Lunch with Sonny Corinthos? Yes...yes...far away from here and my secret," she thought to herself.

"Y...yes...you can buy me lunch," Alexis whispered. "Why don't you wait...in the car...I'll be just a few minutes."

"I think I'll wait right here for you, if that's okay?" Sonny asked.

"Yes...why wouldn't it be ok...I'll be right ba..." Alexis froze as she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. Kristina. "Oh God...here we go...please God..."

"Will you be back for dinner...can we have pizza for dinner tonight...can we please," Kristina asked excitedly. "We really want pizza."

"KRISTINA," Alexis said over the girl's rambling. "You haven't even eaten lunch yet. I will be home in time for dinner. But pizza...remember we aren't at home…I don't know if there is even a place to get pizza in Puerto Rico...we will worry about that later, now go eat your lunch..." Alexis rambled.

Sonny stood there, his eyes transfixed on the little girl. Alexis' little girl...God she looked so much like her mother, big brown eyes, straight chestnut hair, and that smile, he'd know it anywhere, though sadly enough he had not seen it on her mother's face much...and the rambling...definitely Alexis' daughter.

The little girl walked toward Sonny and smiled, "Hi," she said softly, raising an eyebrow as if to question who he was.

Alexis froze.

Sonny knelt down before the little girl and said, "Hi, I'm Sonny, what's your name?"

"I'm Kristina," the little girl said confidently.

"Hello, Kristina, it is very nice to meet you," Sonny said softly.

Alexis needed to end this now.

"Kristina, I'm getting ready to go. You need to go into the kitchen, eat your lunch...," Alexis said. "Sonny, I'll be right back."

Alexis took Kristina's hand and walked into the kitchen.

"There you are," Maria said to Kristina. "Your sandwich is ready. Wash your hands and take your seat at the table."

Kristina did as she had been told.

"Maria, I'm going to be gone all afternoon. If you need me you can reach me on my cell phone," Alexis said with tension in her voice.

"Is something wrong?" Maria asked. "Are you okay."

"I'm...fine," Alexis said trying her best to sound like it, though that was not close to being the truth. The rug had just been pulled out from under her. The little world she had was about to be spinning out of control.

Alexis leaned over and kissed Kristina on the cheek.
She then turned to the second half of her secret and ruffled the black curls on the top of his head, and her heart melted as he looked up at her and displayed those dimples she had just seen at her front door.

"Mama..." the young boy said.

Alexis knelt next to the little boy, enveloped him in a hug and placed a soft kiss on his forehead, as she thanked God he had been safely in the kitchen when Sonny had arrived at her door.
