Returning to a Friend

Part 29

For the next three months Sonny and Alexis kept up their routine of seeing Cameron once a week. Sonny would come to visit with his daughter, once a week at first, but then Alexis suggested that he see her as often as he felt the need. She could see how much he adored her and vice versa. She could see how much he missed her each week when he came over and picked her up. After each visit however, Alexis would find a way to discreetly suggest that Sonny leave right after Kristina was in bed. They were making progress in therapy and their conversations flowed at more familiar pace, but Alexis wouldn't trust herself to go into discussions that were too deep, not without her security blanket of a third person there.

Sonny obliged and never offered to make coffee or prepare a meal. He wanted desperately to spend more time with Alexis. He wanted more than anything to get close to her as they had once been, but she kept her walls securely in tact. One night Sonny returned from Kristina's room to find Alexis on the couch going over legal papers, her glasses perched on her nose. He watched her from behind, quietly, not wanting to break the moment. Her slender hand propping up her head as she leaned on the back of the couch. He wondered to himself why he never noticed such subtleties in a woman before Alexis. The way she dipped her head, the way she tapped a long, tapered finger to her temple every once in a while. The small sighs that would escape her lips as she puzzled over what she was doing. Ordinary things that made her ... her. Things that made her endearing even though she was unaware of them.

"What are you doing Corinthos?" she asked casually not looking up from her work.

He smiled. "I'm not ... I'm not doing anything."

"You're watching me ... I can feel you watching me."

"Me?" he said innocently. "I just came from putting my daughter to sleep."

She turned and looked at him with a raised eyebrow.

He let out a low chuckle. "What?" he asked and started moving toward the kitchen. It was time, he decided. He had let her keep her guard up and if he didn't make a move, she would never let him back in.

"Where are you going?"

He hooked a thumb toward her kitchen. "In there."

"For?"

"I felt like having a cup of coffee."

She turned back around and picked up her papers again. "I'm sure Kelly's is still open."

"I felt like having a cup of coffee with the mother of my daughter," he said and started towards the door once more fully expecting to hear her protestations.

Instead she simply said. "Fine."

Fine, that was all he needed to hear. Ten minutes later he carried the tray with two cups on it into the living room and set it down on the coffee table. He turned to her and gently took the document she held out of her hand, setting it to the side.

"I was reading that."

"Yeah and it looked like you were having fun too, but it's break time," he responded as he sat next to her and reached for the two mugs, handing one to her.

She eyed him curiously and then shook her head.

He flashed her the dimples.

She rolled her eyes and took a sip of coffee.

They sat there in silence for a while, both sipping coffee and secretly enjoying just being around the other. Finally Sonny turned his head to her. "You know," he said clearing his throat. "We've been doing real good with therapy and everything."

Alexis nodded.

"Sometimes when I'm at home I think about things you know? I mean I think about the last couple of years and why everything went wrong between us."

"And?" Alexis asked when he didn't continue.

"And," he turned his head to look at her. "I'm sorry."

Alexis swallowed hard and took a deep breath. "You're ... sorry," she stated not quite understanding.

He sniffed and ran a hand through his hair. "I just want you to know that I'm sorry that I hurt you so much. I'm sorry things turned out the way they did." He shook his head. "I just don't think I've said that ... that's all."

Alexis sat back, leaning against the cushions and stared straight ahead. "I did and said some pretty reprehensible things to you as well." She sighed. "I wanted to hurt you. I wanted you to hurt as badly as I did," she admitted.

She sheepishly brought her eyes to his. "I'm sorry too."

He scooted closer to her and took her hand, relieved when she didn't recoil. "I want to be close to you again," he said quietly.

Alexis closed her eyes and reluctantly tilted her head to the side until it rested on his shoulder. "I want that too," she answered softly.

He leaned his head against hers and just enjoyed the small contact she was allowing content for the first time that there was a small shred of hope that they could get back to where they once were.
