Bobbie's
POV
I knew
I should have left as soon as I got the call from Dr. Bonds telling
me that Alexis Davis was in labor and on her way in. I knew there
was trouble when she informed me that the family would be arriving
by ambulance because Sonny had been knocked out at the PCPD. I couldn't
even imagine what had happened and really didn't want to. At the
noise level that burst through the Emergency Room doors before the
doors opened, I knew it was going to be even worse than I thought.
"Damn
it Alexis, you should be on this gurney, not me . . . it's just
a bump on the head," Sonny complained as Alexis walked into
the Emergency Room on her own volition holding Sonny's hand as he
was strapped to the gurney. With her other hand she was pushing
the stroller with Annie and Chloe who were giggling loudly. The
cute kid Ellie with the big mouth was holding on to her little brother's
hand as he kept shouting, "Mama." Then I saw it. MJ was
holding on to a leash with a puppy on the end of it. There was a
puppy in the emergency room -- Dr. Hardy must be rolling in his
grave right now. I looked at the caravan, listened to the cacophony
of noise, contemplated addressing the "puppy issue," and
instead ducked under the nurse's station.
"Daddy,
can me, MJ, and Dammit ride on the gurney since you and mommy don't
want to" Ellie asked, running to keep up, holding MJ's hand
whose hand held Dammit's leash.
"No
baby, the gurney isn't a toy -- it's for sick people. Now Daddy
needs for you to be especially good and look after MJ while we wait
for Johnny and Max to get here, okay?" Sonny ignored Alexis'
snort of derision at Sonny's continued belief that Max and Johnny
would actually show up.
"I
could have sworn I just saw Bobbie at the nurse's station, OWWWW,"
I heard as Alexis obviously started a contraction. I sighed -- I
could no longer hide.
I stood
up and took in the sight before me beginning to move around the
desk to offer assistance. By this time, Sonny was off the gurney
shaking off the paramedics and was holding on to Alexis telling
her to breathe through the contraction as she told him to . . .
well, suffice it to say it was not anatomically possible even for
Sonny. I'm a nurse; I know these things.
I quickly
grabbed a wheel chair and approached Alexis telling her to sit down.
Again, her knowledge of anatomy is clearly flawed, but she finally
sat down in the chair as the contraction ended. It was then I noticed
that the gurney was missing and so were Ellie, MJ, and the puppy.
I wondered if I should point this out to Sonny and Alexis but decided
that I would ignore it or I would be the one going to look for them.
I knew Alexis was again expecting twins and shook my head at the
Alexis I knew just five and a half years ago and this Alexis. Five
and a half years ago if someone had told me that Alexis would: a)
ever get married; b) marry the local crime lord; and c) be saddled
with six children -- I'd have bust a gut laughing. My daughter was
furious and always said Alexis stole her life but as I considered
the melee that was currently Alexis' life I couldn't help but think
that Carly wouldn't have stuck around past the birth of child number
two. I loved my daughter but knew her limitations -- alphabetically.
"Damn
-- what happened to Ellie, MJ and Dammit!" Sonny said as he
looked around and also noticed the missing gurney.
Alexis
rolled her eyes, "She's daddy's little girl. No doesn't mean
no, it just means not when people are looking."
I burst
out laughing and Alexis glared at me and challenged, "Are you
laughing at my husband?"
I considered
my answer carefully because I had a feeling a lot was riding on
it. If I said "yes," Alexis would likely threaten to sue
and go into full Cassadine defense mode. No one messed with Sonny
when Alexis was around -- well, no one but Alexis. If I said "no,"
she wouldn't believe me. "I've developed Tourette's Syndrome
and burst out laughing at inopportune moments -- I'm terribly sorry."
Alexis narrowed her eyes clearly not believing me but unwilling
to challenge me.
Alexis
sighed, "Sonny you better go find them. Just meet me back in
delivery after you do. And for God's sakes get someone here to watch
them -- I don't care if you have to break someone's kneecaps to
get them here -- but get them here fast." Alexis smiled, "Wait
-- I have an idea. Call our Buttinsky sisters and tell them I'm
in labor but they shouldn't come to the hospital -- don't mention
that the kids are with us." I watched Alexis and Sonny share
a Machiavellian grin and could only think of one word -- soulmates
-- scary -- but soulmates. Sonny leaned down and planted quite the
passionate kiss on Alexis' more than willing mouth -- I saw lips,
tongue, teeth, and another baby in their future if they weren't
careful.
"I
love you Alexis and will be there as soon as I've found our spawn
and Dammit," Sonny said with a grin pushing the stroller with
the two little girls so quickly they were shouting "Weee."
"Come
on Alexis, let's get you to delivery -- you'll be happy to note
that Dr. Bonds pre-registered you so no paperwork this time,"
I announced trying to score points with what no doubt would be my
patient from hell.
Alexis
nodded with a goofy grin on her face as her eyes followed Sonny's
quickly retreating form. I turned and said without thinking, "Nice
ass." As soon as the words were out I regretted them. I mean
this was my former son-in-law and his wife could chew me up and
spit me out for a light afternoon snack. I sucked in a lot of air
preparing for the onslaught.
"Yea,
and that isn't even his best attribute," Alexis said with a
smile, her goofy grin still in place. Someone was feeling some major
Sonny-love right now, which was good, because shortly she would
be in a lot of pain because of that Sonny-love and she needed to
be starting from a position of love or I feared gun play in the
delivery room.
****
Twenty
minutes later, I was alone with Alexis in the delivery room, she'd
had two more contractions and the Sonny-love was starting to wane
a bit. "Where the hell is that . . . peasant? The least he
could do is show up when I once again am about to deliver his babies.
I can't believe he gets me pregnant and then just abandons me. And
he thought I had a problem with commitment. Where is his commitment?
If he's not careful his "commitment" will be before Judge
Griffin tomorrow -- I just need two other signatures and I'm pretty
sure Ned and Jax would sign." Yikes, she was going into Princess
Cassadine mode and I did not want to be around for the beheadings.
Just then I heard the noise and so did she. I saw her sigh with
relief as the troop pushed their way into the delivery room. Sonny
looked like he just returned from facing Stalin at the Russian Front,
yet the look on his face suggested that perhaps he was smarter than
I thought and realized that this was the Russian Front waiting for
him with her arms crossed and a "where the hell have you been"
look on her face.
Sonny
looked at Alexis' inquiring expression and shook his head, "You
don't want to know -- trust me. Let's just say that we will be financing
the rebuilding and outfitting of the Hospital Cafeteria."
"Ellie,
Daddy told you that the gurney was just for sick people, why did
you deliberately ignore what he told you baby?" Alexis asked
with a stern mother's voice.
Ellie
immediately demonstrated that she was also Alexis' daughter, "But
mommy, Dammit threwed up in the 'mergency room so I put him up on
the gurney and MJ was holding his leash so he had to get up there
too. And you told me not to let go a' his hand and so I had to get
up there too," Ellie explained reasonably as Alexis rolled
her eyes. "Besides, Mommy, MJ and me was hungry and we didn't
want to bother you when you were 'livering babies," Ellie explained
with a proud smile.
Alexis
couldn't help but smile back at the charming dimples that reflected
the man who'd gotten her into this mess in the first place. "So
did you get something to eat, sweetie?"
Ellie
ran to Alexis' bed and climbed up dragging MJ with her. Dammit too
jumped up on the bed but at the look on Alexis' face he jumped down
again whimpering. "So mommy are you 'livering boy babies or
girl babies? Cuz, Daddy said something about wanting boys because
if we had any more horse moans in the house, he'd have to move in
ten years so he didn't have to face the UPSing. Why do girl babies
mean that horses will moan and why does daddy have to ship the horses
somewhere? Can't we keep the horses -- in secret I mean. Like you
keep that little kitty hidden in your bedroom. I don't see why me
and MJ can't play with your little kitty like Daddy gets to. Daddy
loves that kitty more than Dammit -- I can tell. Daddy never kisses
Dammit. But Mommy, why can't Daddy ever see your little kitty again
unless he gets a 'sectomy and what is a 'sectomy -- can me and MJ
have one too so we can see your kitty?" With that Ellie pouted
at Daddy.
I just
didn't know what to say nor did any of the adults in the room. By
any of the adults I referred to myself, Kristina, Courtney, Jax,
Ned, Johnny, Max, and Dr. Bonds who'd all walked in as Ellie climbed
on the bed. We were all stunned.
Suddenly,
Kristina said, "Alexis, aren't you allergic to cats?"
Everyone in the room turned to her wondering if she was that naïve
or if she was a masochist of some kind.
Sonny
had grabbed Alexis' hand but before either could say anything to
the crowd, Jax added his two cents worth, "Sonny, I'd be happy
to . . ."
"One
more word, Candyboy, and I'll give you a vasectomy with a rusty
knife," Sonny growled.
Ellie
folded her arms her pout deepening, "So Uncle Jax will get
to see mommy's kitty too?" she asked her voice rising at the
injustice of it all.
"Over
his dead body, pumpkin -- Mommy's kitty is exclusively mine baby,
and anyone here that forgets that will be . . ." Sonny was
in full territorial mode when Alexis interrupted.
"So
perhaps we should set up stadium seating in the delivery room so
you all can watch," Alexis said snidely, "Kristina, Courtney,
Jax, and Ned -- you all take MJ, Ellie, Chloe, and Annie out of
here. I think my sweet babies deserve a trip to the park, ice cream,
the video arcade, and anything else that will keep them entertained
and I can think of no four people who deserve . . . the privilege
of taking them more than you four."
I felt
for them, I really did, as the four sighed at their fate and Alexis
kissed each of her children goodbye lovingly no doubt trying hard
to remember how much she loved them in order to ruck up for the
next and if I would guess, GOD HELP SONNY if it wasn't, last round
of childbirth she intended to go through. On her way out the door
Ellie yelled, "Mommy, mommy, Uncle Jax just promised to buy
me a pony. I know daddy doesn't want anymore horse moans but please
don't let him UPS my pony away."
"Before
you even ask, Dr. Bonds, that would be a yes on all the drugs you
have to offer," Alexis said with a sigh as she flipped Jax
off. I grinned. Dr. Bonds immediately gave her some of the "good
stuff" I think really for herself rather than Alexis.
"Mommy,
what does that mean? Is that a way to say goodbye?" Ellie asked
curiously at Alexis' gesture.
We
all looked at Alexis as she sighed upon the entry of drugs into
her system, "Yup, Ellie -- that's the special way you say goodbye
to someone you really like a whoooooooole lot just to let them know
how much they mean to you." Alexis' words had begun to slur,
"I also like to add to the gesture by telling said person to
'stick this where the sun don't shine you . . .'"
Sonny
interrupted, "Okay, Alexis let's have us some babies -- bye
Ellie." Ellie shrugged obviously cataloguing her mother's disclosure
for future reference. I feared for Ellie's first teacher.
****
Eight
hours later and I was still there checking Alexis' vitals. Things
had gone well with the birth of their two daughters but Alexis had
fallen asleep exhausted and was just now waking up. "Hey, how
you doing sweetheart?" Sonny asked lovingly as he kissed Alexis.
"Good,
where are my angels?" Alexis asked smiling.
"I'll
get them Alexis," I offered, "They're probably pretty
hungry right now." As I walked out the door I couldn't help
but grin at Sonny's careful questioning of Alexis.
"Um,
honey I know we said you get to name the babies this time . . ."
He began when Alexis interrupted.
"Yup,
I do and I'm still thinking . . ." Alexis said proprietarily.
Sonny
looked at Alexis and said, "Well, Alexis you already named
them according to the hospital records."
Alexis
looked confused as a worn out Jax, Kristina, Ned, and Courtney returned
with the entire family. "I did?" Alexis asked surprised
and then said firmly, "Well I'm sure they are great names for
the girls . . ."
Sonny
sighed, "So you really want to stick with Frick and Frack Corinthos
then?"
