Part
13 -- Going to get Daddy (Alexis' POV)
I
don't believe this. Here I am, eight months pregnant, AGAIN, and
I have been called down to get Sonny out of jail, AGAIN. As if that
weren't enough, I had to bring the kids and that damn dog with me,
because no one would watch them. What the hell happened to helping
out a pregnant woman in need?
After
the car ride from hell, I finally got everyone out of the car and
up the stairs of the station. (Note to self, threaten legal suit
if a ramp isn't installed out there IMMEDIATELY.) Once we actually
got into the squad room, there sat Sonny, looking calm and collected
while I was covered in vomit and dog hairs. For one second, I was
tempted to turn around and leave his cocky ass right where it was.
After
dealing with the junior detective who was typing Sonny's report,
I headed for Taggert, knowing this was all his damn doing.
I never
actually got a chance to talk to him, because that damn dog got
loose and almost got himself arrested for destroying a tray of evidence.
I would have gladly let them lock him up myself, but it would break
Ellie's heart. Only good thing about that damn dog is now Ellie
is more concerned about where he is at night than the penguin, making
for no more late night trips to the car to retrieve it. And less
interruptions for Sonny and me.
Once
the mess was cleaned up and the dog and kids were calmed down, I
looked around for Taggert and what do you know, he had skipped out
on me, the little coward. I finally got someone to bring me the
arrest record and was just looking over it when the commissioner
himself appeared in the room.
"Counselor,
I had a feeling we'd see you here today."
"Back
off Mac, I'm in no mood."
"My,
my, my. Someone's in a cranky mood."
Is
he as dense as he seems?
"You
bet your ass I am. I'm ready to give birth at any minute, I have
four kids and a damn dog here with me and I get called down here
for this? Are you serious? THIS is what you arrested my client for?"
Mac
read over the statement and even he had the grace to look sheepish.
He took off his glasses and laid them on the desk, as he pinched
the bridge of his nose. Mac had learned long ago not to make me
mad, and making me mad when I was as pregnant as I was right then,
well, let's just say he looked concerned.
"Capelli,
get over here," he yelled at the rather attractive detective
that was currently typing up an arrest record for a wild eyed woman
sitting at a desk near Sonny's. I was a little concerned to see
Ellie talking to the woman and called her back over to where Sonny
sat.
"Sonny,
if you think you could manage, maybe you could watch what your daughter
is doing and who she is talking to while I try and get your sorry
butt out of this. That is, if you're not too busy. I'd hate to interrupt
you while you're sitting there doing NOTHING. And holding Annie
doesn't count. In case you hadn't noticed, she fell asleep five
minutes ago and...."
"Breathe
Alexis."
"Mac,
I'll be right back."
I slowly
and calmly walked over to Sonny and leaned down to look directly
in his eyes.
"What
did you just say to me?"
If
half of Sonny's rivals could have seen him just then, his reputation
would have been ruined. Fear looks good on my husband sometimes
and right then, he looked down right petrified.
"Daddy,
you KNOW mommy doesn't like for you to tell her that when she is
mad."
"You
should listen to your daughter Sonny."
"Alexis,
I.."
"Sonny,
just watch the kids and TRY to keep them under control. And here,"
I leaned over, picked the damn dog up off the floor where he had
just had an accident, and plopped him in Sonny's lap, "hold
him so there are no more accidents."
I was
walking away as I heard Ellie release a breath she had been holding.
"Daddy
that was close. I thought you were gonna get a spanking, 'course
then I remembered that you aren't in you and mommy's room at home.
It's a good thing we're not at home, huh daddy?"
I just
kept walking. Part of me was glad that the detective typing his
report had heard that. Let Sonny be the one to be embarrassed and
red faced for once.
Returning
to Mac and the now nervous Detective Capelli, I grabbed the report
off the desk and waved it in front of their faces.
"This?
This is why I had to drag four kids and a damn dog down here in
the middle of the afternoon? I want to know who came up with this
one? You must be getting really desperate if you're having to resort
to this. Abuse of the 911 emergency phone system? If I thought this
was a joke, I might laugh."
"911?
Mommy we know them, don't we MJ?"
I looked
over to where Sonny was still cuffed. Ellie was sitting on the desk,
happily swinging her legs back and forth in excitement.
"MJ,
911! Remember?"
MJ
wasn't paying too much attention to Ellie as he was standing in
front of Sonny with his arms outstretched waiting for Sonny to pick
him up.
"Momma
hold MJ."
Sonny
rolled his eyes, handed the damn dog to Ellie and reached down and
picked up his son. He looked him in the eye, took MJ's little hand
in his, and placed it on his chest.
"Daddy
MJ, say daddy."
"Momma!
Momma! Momma!" MJ happily poked Sonny in the chest with a pudgy
finger, his deep voice resounding through the squad room.
Ellie
giggled and tugged on MJ's shirt.
"MJ.
911. Remember?"
MJ
turned around and picked up the handset of the phone sitting at
the edge of the desk. He handed it to his big sister and demanded
"Ellie call."
Ellie
shook her head and put the phone down.
"Ellie
call. Ellie call!"
"MJ,
I can't call less there's a 'mergency. I told you that last night
when we were calling them."
"Kristin
Adella, get over here right now. And give that damn dog to your
father."
She
slid slowly off the desk and walked over to me, MJ trailing behind.
"What's
wrong mommy?"
"I'm
going to ask you a question and I want you to tell me the truth,
do you understand?"
"I
always tell the truth mommy."
Ok,
she had me there.
"Did
you call 911 last night?"
"Yes."
"Why?
You know that 911 is not a toy."
"I
wasn't playing mommy."
"Then
why did you call them?"
"Because
I thought daddy was hurt. He was yelling that someone was killing
him and he couldn't hold out much longer. And then you were screaming
and telling someone to just do it and I thought you were hurt too.
I got so scared mommy, so I called 911. But when I told them what
you were saying, they told me to just go to bed and be glad that
my mommy and daddy liked each other."
"But
you said them Ellie. How many times did you call?"
"Just
five mommy."
"Five?
Why?"
"Well,
after I used the phone in the kitchen, I wanted to make sure it
worked on all the phones and then I called to ask them what happens
when 911 needs 911. And you know what mommy? They didn't know. I
thought 911 knew everything. I hope nothing bad happens to them
cause they're really nice, 'cept for that last lady. She was mean.
I thought maybe Carly was a 911 now cause this lady was as mean
as she is."
As
I listened to Ellie ramble on, I looked at Mac. He silently picked
up the arrest report and tore it in half as he motioned to Capelli
to uncuff Sonny.
I started
to walk over to Sonny when I noticed something.
"Sonny,
where's MJ?"
Apparently
MJ wasn't the only thing missing.
"Anyone
seen my glasses?"
Oh
no, please tell me he hadn't. I looked under a desk and there sat
MJ, happily twisting Mac's glasses into a shape resembling a pretzel.
"Momma
look," he said proudly.
I looked
at Mac and smiled weakly.
"Mac,
did I mention that MJ is going through his "Picasso" phase
right now?"
I held
out the glasses. Mac just looked at the mangled frames, rolled his
eyes, and shook his head.
"Alexis,
do me a favor."
"Anything
Mac."
"Please
take your husband, and your kids, and your dog, and get out of here."
"Actually,
I was about to do that. I need to do that. Now."
"Why
Alexis, what's wrong?"
"My
water just broke."
"What,"
Sonny yelled as he shot up out of his chair.
"I
said my water just broke Sonny, calm down."
"We
have to get to the hospital Alexis. Now."
"
I know that Sonny, now let's get the kids and get out of here."
"I'm
on it Alexis."
I turned
around to get my briefcase and heard a thud behind me. I turned
back around to see that Sonny had slipped on the little accident
that damn dog had left on the floor and was now out cold. Great.
Ellie
bent over Sonny and when he wouldn't wake up, she looked at me.
"Now
can I call 911 mommy?"
