Part
11 -- Going to get Daddy (Taggert's POV)
I should
have known when I got out of bed this morning what kind of day it
was going to be. When you see a black cat AND the ex Mrs. Corinthos
cross your path on the way to work, you know it's not going to be
good. I know what Carly was doing in that part of town, still wondering
about the cat though.
All
in all, the day actually went pretty good. My raise came through,
I had a hot date, and I had managed to haul in Corinthos. Granted,
it was a trumped up charge and I had no doubt that Ms. Davis would
have him released within the hour, but it still felt good to slap
those cuffs on his wrists. Had I known it would be my last good
feeling of the day, I would have enjoyed it longer.
With
five minutes left on my shift, I had figured it was safe to dress
for my date. I was cooling it at my desk, letting some jr. detective
deal with Sonny boy, when what seemed like a hurricane blew into
the relative calm of the PCPD.
All
activity in the room ground to a halt as Ms. Davis strode purposefully
into the squad room. That wasn't unusual; we had seen her determined
gait countless times before. We had just never seen her 8 months
pregnant, covered in what appeared to be vomit, and pushing a double
stroller. She was being trailed by that oldest kid Ellie; who was
dragging a puppy with one hand and her little brother with the other
hand.
There
was a wild look in her eyes and I was fervently praying that my
shift would end before she fixed me in her sights. I knew I had
seen that black cat and Carly for a reason. She fixed with me a
piercing glare and headed my way. As she passed the desk Sonny boy
was cuffed to, she placed a screaming infant and a bottle in his
hands. The detective writing up the report started to protest.
"Hey,
you can't.."
Every
officer in the room held their breath. Ms. Davis whirled around
mid stride and fixed him with what Sonny once called her "Cassadine"
look. I've seen it; it isn't pretty. Coming from an eight months
pregnant Cassadine, I have a feeling the guy will have nightmares
for months.
"Were
you speaking to me?"
Sonny
looked from the cop to his wife, a smug expression on his face.
For once, I had to give him this one.
The
officer gulped and said meekly, "I'm sorry Mrs. Corinthos.."
Every
officer in the room, and even the oldest kid said in one voice,
"it's Ms. Davis when she is working."
"I'm
sorry Ms. Davis, it's just that it really is against regulations
for the guilty party,.."
"My
daddy is never guilty, and what party? You never said we were going
to a party mommy. Where is it? Is there going to be cake? MJ, we
get to go to a party, did you hear?"
That
Ellie is the kid everyone hoped and feared that the Corinthos' would
get. She is too damn smart and too damn cute for it all to be in
one child.
Not
sure what MJ got from her little contribution to the conversation,
if anything, because all the kid did was hold up his arms to Sonny
and yell "mamma!"
Sonny
looked at Ms. Davis with a pained expression.
"I
thought we were going to do something about that. And why the hell
did you bring the kids with you?"
"First
of all, Sonny, he calls everyone that right now. And trust me,"
she fumed as she put a hand on her stomach, "I seriously doubt
if anyone in this room doubts your manliness, unless they think
all of this happened by artificial insemination."
She
then leaned down over the desk and fixed Sonny with a piercing glare.
I was surprised to realize that I felt a flash of sympathy for the
guy. Never question a mother on why she does anything in regards
to her children.
"
And second," she said in a low voice, "You ask why I brought
the kids? It sure as hell wasn't because it was "bring your
brood to work day." It was because NO ONE would baby sit. Johnny
and Max both claimed to have some important errand to do for YOU.
Kristina suddenly developed a migraine, Jax just told the truth
and said he was afraid of them, and by the time I found the number
of a nanny agency, the damn phone was out of order and MJ had flushed
mine down the toilet AGAIN. Does that answer your question Sonny?"
For
the first time in my life, I actually saw a look of what can only
be described as fear on Sonny Corinthos' face. He nodded his head
and suddenly became fascinated by how much milk was left in his
daughters' bottle.
She
then turned her attention back to the officer who, until tonight,
had not yet had the "pleasure" of dealing with the Corinthos'.
"I
am Mr. Corinthos' attorney. I need to speak with the officer on
record; whom I believe is Lt. Taggert. Do you really think your
superior would like me to conduct official business with a child
in my arms that could at any moment expel it's stomach contents
on what is clearly an outfit for a date? What is it? You think I
might have concealed a dangerous weapon in her diaper? Feel free
to check, but I warn you, it's been a couple of hours since she
was changed, and if you look, you change. Is that clear?"
The
officer nodded meekly and turned his attention back to the computer
screen in front of him. I noted with bemusement that neither of
her older children had been in the least bit affected by what had
just transpired. In fact, they almost seemed bored. Ellie was definitely
bored and decided to tell her mother, in no uncertain terms.
"Mommy,
I wanna leave. Can't you and daddy do this at home? And if we stay
here, where are you gonna make up? Or do they have bedrooms here?
Is that why you and daddy come here a lot? Oh, and look MJ, daddy
is wearing that bracelet like he has in the drawer by his bed. Daddy,
why are you wearing that bracelet here? One time I heard you tell
mommy that you would only wear that bracelet in your bedroom."
"Well,
well, well, and here I thought Sonny was opposed to wearing handcuffs.
I see now that it all depends on who is putting them on him I guess."
Now if you think I verbalized that thought, you're nuts. Ms. Davis
may have looked mortified, but she was now fuming more than ever,
and I was about to be the recipient of the wrath that was transpiring
due to her five year old spilling yet another secret. I'm told she
does that a lot.
As
Ms. Davis turned towards me, I steeled myself to be the last, but
certainly not least recipient of her anger. I'm still not sure if
what happened next was a blessing or a curse. At the exact moment
she began walking toward me, Ellie began screaming that her puppy
was missing. Who the hell names a dog "Dammit?" She and
MJ started running all over the squad room looking for the dog,
who was now barking furiously somewhere in the room.
One
of them had finally found him and was trying to pull him out from
under a desk, when he got loose and ran directly into the path of
a lab technician who carrying a tray of urine samples. The tech
tripped over the dog, and guess who ended up wearing the samples?
At least I didn't have to deal with Ms. Davis.
