Now What?

Part 7

Alexis had no idea what to expect from Sonny this evening. He had been acting so strangely ever since they arrived on this little island. Even this short ride in the limo felt different. Sonny was sitting next to Alexis and she could feel his eyes on her.

I can’t believe you’re sitting there staring at me. Are you afraid I’ll disappear into thin air? I’m not going anywhere, Sonny. You make me feel too good. I wish I could turn and look at you because I’m the one who’s afraid you’ll disappear.

Sonny couldn’t take his eyes off of Alexis. I’m afraid if I look away, you won’t be here with me. I wish I knew what you were feeling right now. I hope my dreams come true tonight.

The limo pulled to a stop. “Mr. Corinthos, we’ve arrived.” The chauffeur got out of the car and opened the back door.

“Thank you. Ok, Alexis, we’re here. Are you ready for a night I hope you’ll never forget?”

“I’m ready.”

Sonny helped Alexis out of the limo. When she saw where they were, she couldn’t help but smile. They were down at a beach, and the sun had just started to set. Luckily, they were on the west side of the island so they would be able to watch the sunset.

“Sonny, this is beautiful.”

“Take my hand. Let’s walk.”

“Let me take my shoes off first.”

“Good idea. Me too.”

They both stopped to take their shoes off. Then Sonny led Alexis to the water’s edge and they began walking along the shore.

I can’t believe that I am on a beach at sunset on Sonny’s private island, walking with the man I love. I only wish he’d love me back. Even if you don’t, though, this is bliss. Just being with you.

They walked, holding hands, neither saying a word. After about 10 minutes, Alexis could see something that looked like fire up ahead.

“Sonny, is that fire or something? Do you see it?”

“Alexis, that’s part of my surprise for you. Don’t look at it!”

“Uh, yeah, that’s like saying not to look at the white elephant in the room!” She kept trying to see ahead of her.

“OK, I warned you!” Sonny went behind Alexis and covered her eyes with his hands.

“Sonny!” Alexis squealed in delight. She simply couldn’t stop herself.

You have the most wonderful laugh. I want to have that in my life forever. I want you in my life forever.

They continued walking, Sonny careful not to step on Alexis’ feet. Finally they stopped and Sonny took his hands from Alexis’ eyes. When Alexis saw what Sonny had done, she almost couldn’t speak. Before her eyes was a table set up for two on a blanket of roses on the sand. The table was filled with food. She saw that the fire she had seen from afar were torches burning. She had never seen anything more romantic in her life. But what does of all of this mean, Sonny? I am so confused! Why did you bring me here?

“This is beautiful, Sonny. Thank you for bringing me here. When –“

“Sssh. Not important. I wanted to share this place with you. You’re the first person I have ever brought here. In fact, I have only been to the island twice, once when I bought it and again after I had the cottages built.”

Sonny took her hand again and led her to a large blanket on the sand. “Let’s sit and watch the sunset. It’ll be gone before we know it.”

“The sunset is beautiful, Sonny.” But not as beautiful as you. God, I wish I could just let go and tell you how I really feel. But I know it would ruin things because you just don’t feel the same about me. Alexis’ eyes began to tear up as she thought about what could never be.

Sonny looked over at Alexis and saw the tears forming in her eyes. His heart contracted with love. “What’s wrong, Alexis? Are you unhappy?”

Alexis looked away from Sonny. “Uh, the sunset is just so beautiful, I couldn’t help it.”

“No, Alexis. I think it’s something more. Tell me.”

“I’m fine, Sonny. Please leave it alone.” Before I lose control and tell you what I’m feeling.

Sonny felt that it was time. Although he was nervous and scared to death that Alexis would reject him, he couldn’t wait any longer to tell her how he really felt.

“Alexis, please look at me.” Alexis turned and looked at him. He gently took her hands within his own. “We’re friends, right?” Alexis nodded. “You’re my best friend. I trust you more than I have ever trusted anyone else in my entire life. You know that’s a big issue with me. I know that you’ll never betray that trust – I know that with my gut.”

“Sonny, you tell me this all the time. Yes, you trust me and I trust you. What –“

“Alexis, please don’t interrupt. I’m trying to say something here. I am scared to death to say it and if you keep interrupting me, I may lose my nerve.”

What are you trying to say, Sonny? What are you getting at?
