Now What?

Part 2

“Kristina, this is Sonny. I’d like to talk to you for a few minutes if you’re not busy.”

Kristina was taken aback. Sonny wants to speak to me? He’s made it clear that I am not his favorite person. I wonder what he wants?

“Well, Sonny, I’m right across the hall. If you want to speak to me, come over and do it.”

“Actually, I was wondering if you could come over here instead. I don’t want Alexis knowing about it.”

“Why not? Do you have something to hide or something?”

“We’ll talk about it when you get here. Can you come over now?” Sonny prayed that she could come now – he just had to get some answers.

“All right, Sonny. I’m curious as to what you have to say.”

“OK, just don’t tell Alexis.”

“OK.”

Sonny hung up the phone and began pacing. What am I going to say to Kristina? Will she tell me the truth? Man, I wish I knew how Alexis really felt.

There was a knock at the door. “Sonny, it’s Kristina,” said Johnny.

“Yes, let her in.”

“OK, Sonny, I’m here. What did you want to talk to me about?”

“Remember a few months ago you said that Alexis was in love with me?”

“Yes.” Oh, great. What does he want to talk about that for?

“I have been confused ever since. You tried to back track and say it wasn’t true, you were mistaken but I had my doubts. Now, Alexis has made a date with some guy named Charles. I want to know how Alexis really feels about me. Is what you said first or what you said second the truth?” Please, please, please, let it be what you said first.

Kristina didn’t know what to say. If I tell you the truth, not only will Alexis kill me, she’ll only be hurt more. But I don’t like lying either. I’ll try to avoid telling you anything. But I will certainly lie to you before I tell you the truth.

“Well, Sonny, it’s hard to say what Alexis really feels towards you. If she made a date with Charles, I think that means that she is she not in love with you. It would be pretty stupid for her to bother with you since we all know you’re still in love with Carly.”

Sonny’s stomach turned at the thought of his ex-wife. I don’t love that woman anymore, Sonny just realized. I can’t believe I actually believe that now. I thought I would always love her. Please, please, don’t let this be true about Alexis.

“Kristina, you didn’t really answer my question. What is it, does she love me or not?”

Kristina began to get angry for being put on the spot. “You know, Sonny, what the he** difference does it make to you? No, she’s NOT in love with you. She’s dating now so just leave her alone, all right?” I hate you for making me lie. But Alexis is better off without you in her life.

Sonny was crushed. But he still wasn’t sure if he should believe her or not.

“OK, she’s not in love with me. Thanks for your honesty, Kristina.”

“You’re welcome,” Kristina said sarcastically as she stormed out of his apartment.

Sonny was at his wits end. Now what? I am no better off than I was this morning. I’m only more confused and unsure than ever.

For the next week, Alexis managed to avoid Sonny. She enlisted Kristina in her crusade to stay away from the man. She even asked Johnny not to tell Sonny whether or not she was home. She doubted whether Sonny cared one way or the other about her whereabouts, but she didn’t want to have her efforts to avoid Sonny ruined by his guard. Johnny agreed to keep her comings and goings private, but he felt unloyal to Sonny.

Every time that Sonny came over to see her, if she was alone, she just didn’t answer the door if she saw it was Sonny through the peephole. If Kristina was there, she asked her to lie and say she was out. Sonny began leaving messages on her cell phone and home answering machine. She returned the messages occasionally on his machine, just stating that she had been really busy and it seemed she was just never home. Nothing, of course, could be farther from the truth. She hadn’t gone anywhere except to see Nikolas in over a week. She was in a serious depression and she knew it was because she was missing the man she loved. But she knew she had to forget about him.

Sonny was miserable. He hadn’t seen Alexis in over a week. Suddenly, the woman had become the social butterfly of Port Charles. The woman was never home! Every time he went over to see her, Kristina said she either wasn’t home or no one answered the door. He could never get Alexis on the phone either – her stupid answering machine always kicked on. He was getting tired of leaving her messages. The only time he ever heard her voice was on the message telling him to leave a message and when she left him messages on his machine.

He began to ask Johnny whether or not Alexis was home or not. For some reason, Johnny had promised Alexis not to tell Sonny her comings and goings. Sonny was not happy about this and wondered why Alexis would do that. He was irritated with Johnny but decided not to make an issue out of it.

Sonny felt nauseated when he thought about Alexis’ upcoming date with Charles. It was tonight. I hope this guy is a dirt bag and Alexis has a horrible time with him. He felt guilty for wishing a bad evening on Alexis, but he wanted her to have good times only when she was with him. He wanted to somehow stop the date from happening, but short of getting himself arrested, he couldn’t think of a decent way to do it.

However, if I do get arrested, at least I can be with her. Maybe she’ll keep me company down in lockup like she did last time. I really felt close to her when she did that for me. I don’t think I thanked her enough for that.

Sonny gave up on the idea of getting himself arrested. He would have to see Alexis some other way.
