Now What?

Part 1

Sonny woke up in his bed with a huge grin on his face. He quickly sat up, however, when he realized just whom he had been dreaming about. Alexis? Kissing me? Me kissing her back?!? Whoa! Now where did that come from? Wherever it came from, I need a cold shower. Sonny went into the bathroom, turned the water on, and got in the shower. As he washed himself, he thought more about his dream about Alexis.

Well, I guess as I think about it now, yes, Alexis is an attractive woman. What in the heck is wrong with me that I didn’t realize that until now? Even after Kristina told me that Alexis was in love with me, I never really thought about it. I still have no idea if what Kristina said is true or not, but it sure isn’t from lack of trying to figure it out! But, man, after that dream, I am sure as heck gonna try to get some real answers.

Sonny got out of the shower and dried himself off. As he dressed, he tried to think about how Alexis had been relating towards him lately. When I saw her last night, she seemed pleasant enough but she’s always like that. This may be more difficult than I thought. But I have to know. After that dream . . . Sonny smiled deeply as he thought about the dream again.

“Alexis, what’s wrong? You seem depressed. It’s about Sonny, isn’t it?”

“Kristina, I’m fine. Why does everything have to be about Sonny? I am so sick of hearing that man’s name! Nothing is ever going to come of my feelings for him. Carly is just too important to him. I am just his attorney, tenant, and friend – probably in that order, I’m afraid.”

“Alexis, I know it must hurt to realize that, but I think it’s best. Sonny just isn’t right for you. You know, maybe you should try seeing someone else. At least it will be a distraction of sorts.”

“Oh, I don’t know. I tried that with Scott and it was a disaster. I don’t want to go there again.”

“Well, what about calling that nice man who helped you out on that case last week?”

“Charles? I don’t know . . .”

“C’mon, do it! I’ll get your phone book.”

“It’s upstairs.”

As Kristina started up the stairs, Alexis’ thoughts turned to Sonny. Damn, why do I love that man so? I’m hopeless. Who am I kidding? Going out with someone else isn’t going to solve anything. I’ll still be thinking about those cute dimples . . . C’mon, snap out of it, Alexis! Back to reality! Sonny loves Carly, not you. Move on!

“Alexis, here’s your phone book..” Kristina startled Alexis out of her thoughts.

“Thanks. I guess I’ll give Charles a call.”

Kristina went back upstairs while Alexis used the phone. “Great. His answering machine. (Pause) Hi, Charles. This is Alexis Davis. Could you please call me back as soon as you get this message? My number is 555-4678. Thanks.”

Alexis plopped down on the couch and wondered once again what she was getting herself into. Just then, a knock sounded at the door. Now what, thought Alexis. Please just don’t be Sonny. I really need to get him out of my head.

Of course, that’s just who it was at the door – Sonny. He had finished dressing and practically tripped over himself trying to get over to see Alexis as fast as he could. He hadn’t even thought up a plausible reason as to why he needed to see her. Whatever popped into his head, he guessed.

“Sonny. Hi. What can I do for you?”

“What, no ‘Come in?’ That’s not very hospitable.”

“Sooorry. Pleeease come in,” Alexis said sarcastically as she swept out her arms, motioning for him to enter. Sonny noticed in pleasure that she had on a skirt and not some old baggy sweats. He wanted to get a good look at those legs.

“Alexis, are you irritated with me or something?”

“Well, it seems like you’re over here all the time and you always assume that I’m not busy. You never ask if I am in the middle of something. It seems you just expect me to drop everything because ‘his highness’ has come calling.”

“I apologize. I didn’t realize you felt that way. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I guess I felt that I shouldn’t have to. Why are you here, Sonny?” She sat down on the couch and looked up at him.

“I . . .I don’t have a reason. I . . . I wanted to see you, that’s all.” He sat down next to her.

Alexis’ breath caught in her throat. Calm down, that doesn’t mean anything. Please, don’t sit so close to me!

“Oh. Well, here I am.”

Yes, there you are, thought Sonny. His eyes roamed down to her legs, which were neatly crossed. He unconsciously licked his lips. And, God, you’re beautiful. Why didn’t I really see that before? I have been so blind. But I don’t think you’re ready to hear any of this, are you? I wish I knew if what Kristina said is true or not.

Just then, the phone rang. Alexis got up to answer it. She didn’t feel Sonny’s eyes following her every move.

“Hello? Oh, hi Charles. Thanks for returning my phone call. (Pause) Well, I was wondering if you would like to go to dinner sometime next week? I really enjoyed your company. (Pause) OK, next Friday then. 7:00? Great. I look forward to seeing you. Bye.”

Alexis felt sick to her stomach as she went back over to the couch to sit down. I don’t want Charles -- I want him, she thought, looking over at Sonny. What am I going to do? Well, at least this shows him I have a life that doesn’t revolve around him. Yeah, right. Liar.

Sonny felt sick to his stomach as he realized that Alexis had just made a date with some man named Charles. Who is this creep? I can’t believe this . . .I start to see Alexis in a different light and she goes and makes a date! Now what am I going to do?

“Sonny, I have a headache right now. If you really didn’t have a reason for coming over other than to see me, which you have, would you mind terribly is we just cut this short? I could really use a nap.” Actually, the last thing she truly wanted to do was have Sonny leave, but she knew she needed to stay away from him if she was ever going to get over him.

I wish I could nap with you, thought Sonny. What would you say if I asked?

“Sonny? Are you going to let me go take that nap now?” Alexis interrupted his thoughts.

“Uh yeah, sure. I’ll talk to you later.” He got up and let himself out the door.

Man, you should have said something to her. Like what? I wanna nap with you? She would have laughed in your face. Sonny’s face fell as he walked back into his own apartment.

I know, I’ll ask Kristina point blank about how Alexis really feels about me, even though I can’t stand her. Boy, I must be desperate. And can I trust what she says? Oh, well, it’s worth a shot.

Sonny picked up his phone and called Kristina on her cell phone.
