My Darling, Alexis
by Rachael

She wanted to see him. Sirens blared in the distance as Alexis pulled her coat tightly around her body. She had a bad feeling and she just wanted to see him. She usually followed her instincts and they were telling her to go to him. Alexis heard voices and glanced out into the harbor. A small charter boat was drifting out and she tried to focus on who was yelling. Her hand slipped into the pocket of her coat and gripped the note inside. He asked her not to read it until they met one last time. When he had called her, she wanted to hang up on him but he begged her to listen. She gave him five minutes. He asked her to meet him. The wind blew and Alexis sat down on the bench to wait. After a few minutes went by she stood, determined to walk up the steps and leave. However, the nagging feeling swept over her and she sat back down … she wanted to see him.

Jerry turned the corner and walked down the steps to the docks. Alexis stood when she heard his footsteps and glanced up at him. At first, they said nothing. He came toward her slowly and finally reached out and placed a hand around her waist. He felt her body stiffen but he didn’t care – he had to taste her. When their mouths met, the cold went away. She placed her hands inside his jacket and wrapped her arms around him. She knew it was wrong but for some bizarre, unexplainable reason, she held onto him. Their lips eventually parted and he nuzzled her neck with his face. “You didn’t read my letter yet – did you?”

She stepped out of his embrace and shook her head. “No, I did what you asked. Why did you feel the need to leave it in my office where anyone could stumble upon it?” she asked.

“I knew you would get it; you love to work,” he said softly as he moved a strand of hair away from her face.

“Jerry, what’s going on? You told me on the phone you wanted to see me one last time? The last time I saw you I caught you kissing my daughter,” she said as she glared into his face.

“Alexis, you have to know one thing; trust that everything I have done – has been to protect you. No matter what anyone tries to tell you … you must believe me.”

“You’re kidding, right?”

“Darling, I assure you, this is not a joke. My letter will explain everything. I needed to see you again; you are so beautiful,” he said softly. Jerry took a step back and turned to walk away. Alexis said his name. He didn’t want to look back, but he did.

He thought he saw tears looming in her eyes. He opened his arms and she quickly stepped into his embrace once again “Read my letter. I meant every single word. I swear. You were my one shining light,” he said into her ear. He pulled away and an engine roared in the distance. He let out a breath and cupped her face with his hands. He kissed her one last time and then turned and walked up the steps. He had to get away from her – before he changed his mind.

Alexis sat on the bench and listened as voices pierced through the night. She heard Jerry speaking loudly; an engine was roaring and a boat was moving slowly past the docks. She hid behind several bushes and glanced out onto the water – he was standing on the boat with Karpov and several of his men. She saw his face and for the first time ever, she saw fear in his eyes. Jerry saw her and he let out a breath. She waited until the boat was far out into the water and then sat back down on the bench. She pulled out the letter and opened it …

My Darling Alexis,

I know you are probably angry with me and I am not surprised. I have done many things in my life that are questionable. However, as I once told you – I have no regrets. I was foolish to believe that I could ever have a chance with such an amazing creature such as yourself. But you must know that everything I have done has been for you and your children. I made a vow that I would protect you and I kept that promise. I knew Sam was meeting with Karpov; she and I were conning one another and … I knew you would want to know of her involvement. With that said, I am admitting to you now … I am sacrificing myself in order to keep you and everyone else I love safe.

The voices out on the water were getting louder and Alexis stood to see what the commotion was about. The smaller boat that had floated out into the harbor earlier exploded. She took a step back and glanced over at the larger boat. The voices grew even louder and stronger. She looked back at Jerry’s note and began to read it quickly …

I am doing this because I feel it is what’s right. With Karpov out of the picture, it will be easier for everyone. I know you still have my affidavit and it will explain even further … everything I have been involved in. I do not expect you to dub me a hero – this was a decision I made completely on my own. Tell my brother I love him and that I am sorry for all the hurt I may have caused. My Darling, please remember this one last declaration; my feelings for you were genuine. You were my one shining light … when my world was bitter and gray.

Always,

Jerry

Alexis shook her head and placed the note back into her pocket. She stood and screamed his name – she didn’t want him to die. She knew he was going to sacrifice him self in order to eliminate Karpov. Now, she realized his intentions. She kept her eyes on the horizon and waited … her heart skipped a beat when the boat exploded. The screams were horrific and tears began to roll down her cheeks. She knew he would not survive the blast. Sirens blared in the distance as she held his note against her chest. She stood from the bench and started walking up the steps. Alexis turned back towards the water one last time and whispered, “Goodbye, my darling …”
