Mother's Day With the Davis Women
by Soonerleen

It was 4 a.m., and Alexis was awakened by the sound of a little voice crying, "Mama," on the baby monitor. Alexis got out of bed and walked down to Molly's room. She opened the door to find Molly standing in her crib with tears running down her cheeks.

"Hi, Molly, it's okay, Mama is here. What's wrong, baby?" Alexis asked, as she pulled her youngest daughter out of her crib and held her close. She felt Molly's forehead. "You are not warm." Alexis changed her and then sat down in the rocking chair. "Okay, Molly girl, how about we rock for a little while?" Alexis started to rock Molly as she ran her fingers through her little girl's hair.

"You know what, baby … today is Mother's Day. Today is my favorite day of the whole year. It's the one day I get to spend with my girls and get totally spoiled and pampered. You know, Molly, you are my last baby and you are a fighter. When you are older, I will have to tell you the story of your birth. You were determined to be born even though it wasn't time, and there were so many people that helped you. That is why you are my little Molly girl … because you are a fighter. It must be the genes, because all of the Cassadine women are strong. It makes me so sad that you never got to meet your grandmother. She was an amazing woman and she was an opera singer. I miss her so much. Sometimes mommies miss their mommies. She would be so proud of you and your sisters. Mommy is proud of you too. I love you, baby, so much. Every day you continue to amaze me as you learn new words."

Alexis looked down and saw that Molly had fallen back asleep, so she rose from the rocking chair and laid Molly back down in her crib. Molly whimpered for a few minutes, but Alexis rubbed her back. "It's okay, baby, go back to sleep. Mommy is here." Molly calmed down and fell asleep clutching her bear.

As Alexis turned to go back to bed, she saw Kristina standing in the hallway.

"Kristina, baby, why are you up so early?"

"I heard you talking to Molly. Is she okay?"

"Yes, she is fine. She just needed to be rocked for a little while. Honey, it's still early … how about you come and sleep in Mommy's bed for a little while?"

"Okay," Kristina replied, half asleep.

Alexis helped Kristina into bed and then pulled her into her arms.

"Mommy, why did you name me Kristina?"

Alexis smile. "Well, I named you after my sister, Kristina. Do you remember me showing you her picture?"

"Oh yeah, she had pretty red hair. She was beautiful, Mommy. How come she never visits us?"

Alexis started to tear up. "Baby, Kristina is in heaven. But you know what? She is with us all the time. She is your guardian angel."

"Do you miss her?"

"Yes, sweetie, Mommy misses her everyday. She would have loved you so much."

"And Molly and Sam."

"Oh yes, honey, she would have loved all three of you. In fact, I can see a little of her in all of you."

"Mommy, I almost forgot," Kristina said, yawning. "Happy Mother's Day."

"Thank you, baby. I'm so excited about spending the day with you and your sisters."

"We have lots of surprises for you."

"Oh goody, Mommy likes surprises. We have a big day, sweetie, why don't we try to get some more rest, okay?"

"Okay, Mommy," Kristina said as she drifted off to sleep.

Alexis woke up at 9 a.m. and was surprised to see that Kristina was not in bed. Alexis got up, put on her robe, and walked to the living room. She smiled when she saw her three girls sitting on the sofa.

"Good morning, my sweet girls."

"Happy Mother's Day, Mommy!" Kristina, Molly, and Sam yelled in unison.

Kristina and Molly ran to their mother and handed her a card.

"Mommy, Molly and I made this for you, and Sam helped us."

Alexis gave Kristina and Molly a kiss before walking to Sam and giving her a hug and kiss.

"Let's see …" Alexis said as she opened the card. She tried to hold back tears as she read it out loud.

"Happy Mother's Day to the bestest mommy in the world. We love you. Sam, Kristina, and Molly."

Alexis beamed through her misty eyes. "Thank you so much. I love this card and I love all of you so much."

"We have the whole day planned. First we are going to give you presents. Then we are going to the Metro Court for brunch, and then we are going to take you to the park. Mommy, are you ready for presents?"

"Oh yes, Mommy is always ready for presents."

Sam pulled out a bag from behind the chair and handed Molly a small box. "Here, Molly, give this to Mommy."

Molly gave the little square object to Alexis.

"Did you pick this out?" Alexis asked.

"Yes," Molly said as she jumped up and down.

Alexis opened the box. "Oh honey, it's beautiful."

Alexis pulled out a beautiful charm bracelet. It had all three of the girls' names, birth dates, and birthstones engraved."

Molly exclaimed, "Put it on, Mommy!"

Alexis smiled as she let Sam put the bracelet around her wrist.

Alexis hugged Molly. "Thank you, baby. I just love it."

"Me next, me next!" Kristina yelled as she jumped excitedly. She handed her mother another gift-wrapped box. "This is from me, Mommy."

Alexis opened it up. "Oh, Kristina, this is just wonderful."

Kristina had drawn a picture of her mom and sisters. "See, Mommy, here is me, you, Molly, and Sam," Kristina pointed. "The four Davis women. Sam helped me with the frame."

"Oh, honey, this picture is beautiful and Mommy is going to take it to her office, so that I can show all of my clients."

"Really?" Kristina asked, as she hugged Alexis.

"Really, baby," Alexis said, as she hugged her daughter back.

Then Kristina turned to Sam. "It's your turn, Sam."

Sam pulled out two presents and knelt down in front of Alexis.

"Open this one first. I hope you like it."

"I will because it's from you," Alexis said, as she ran her hand over Sam's cheek.

Alexis removed the wrapping paper to find a small photo album hidden underneath. She opened it, finding it filled with photos of Sam, Kristina, and Molly. There were also pictures of Nikolas, Spencer, Kristina, Jax, Chloe, Ned, and Stefan.

"I wish I had known Stefan and Kristina. Nikolas gave me some of the pictures, and Jax had some pictures of him and your good friend Chloe," Sam explained.

Alexis thumbed through the photo album and saw a picture of a baby that looked identical to Molly.

"Is this Molly?"

"No, Mom, it's me. Most of my pictures were destroyed in the fire, but I found this one, and I thought you might like it," Sam replied.

"Let me see," Kristina demanded.

"Me too, Mommy!" Molly copied her big sister.

Kristina and Molly huddled around their mother to see Sam's baby photo. As Alexis held the photo album out for the girls to see better, she focused her eyes on her eldest daughter.

"Sam, baby, I love it. It's perfect. I think you, Chloe, and Kristina would have been very close. Thank you very much," Alexis said sincerely. As she pulled Sam in for a hug, Molly and Kristina got caught in between the two women, creating a big family hug.

"All my dear girls together," Alexis said emotionally.

As arms found their way back to individual bodies, Sam wiped the tears that had strayed from her eyes. "I have one more present for you."

She gave Alexis a simple white envelope.

When she opened it, Alexis gasped. "You changed your last name to Davis?"

"Yes, is that okay with you?"

"Oh, baby, of course it is!" Alexis exclaimed as she pulled Sam in for another hug. "I love it."

Looking at each of her girls, Alexis continued, "I love you all so much. Thank you for making my day so special."

"You're welcome, Mommy," Kristina replied.

Molly nodded her head in agreement.

Sam gave her mother a warm smile.

"Okay, we have reservations at the Metro Court for 10:30 a.m. so why don't you go and get ready and I will keep the girls occupied," Sam offered.

"Sound good to me," Alexis replied as she got up and gave each one of the girls a kiss before going to her bedroom to get ready.

Alexis and the girls arrived at the Metro Court and were happy to see so many friends and family members.

As the girls settled at their table, Alexis said, "I will be right back."

Alexis went over to Jax and Carly and asked, "Is everything all set for tonight?"

"Yes, by the time you get back from the park, the house will be ready for the party. Sam is going to be very surprised."

"Well, how often does Sam's birthday fall on Mother's Day? I wanted to do something nice for her."

"It's going to be great, now get back over there and enjoy brunch. I have all of your favorites on the menu today."

"Thank you." Alexis smiled as she hugged both Jax and Carly.

Alexis and the girls enjoyed brunch and then went to the park.

While Sam held Molly on her lap on the swings, Alexis talked to Kristina.

"You have been so good today … not spoiling the surprise for Sam."

"I know, Mommy. It's been fun. Not only is it Mother's Day, but it's Sam's birthday. She is going to be so surprised. She probably thinks that we forgot."

"Mommy would never forget any of my girls' birthdays."

Alexis looked down at her watch. "It's time. Let's get your sisters and go home."

"Yay!" Kristina exclaimed quietly. "I'm so excited!"

"Shh …" Alexis warned, as they walked over to Sam and Molly.

Alexis, Sam, and the girls pulled up outside the lake house and Kristina started giggling.

"What is so funny, Kristina?" Sam asked, as she pulled Molly out of her car seat.

Alexis raised her eyebrow at Kristina.

"Nothing, I am just happy."

"Uh, okay," Sam said suspiciously as she realized that something was up.

As they entered the house, Sam flipped on the lights, and everyone yelled, "Surprise!"

Sam was completely shocked. "What's going on?"

She looked around the room and saw Jax, Carly, Nikolas, Emily, Spencer, Maxie, and Lucky with smiles on their faces.

Kristina jumped in, "It's a surprise party for you. Happy Birthday, Sam!" She hugged Sam's waist.

Sam got teary-eyed. "This party is for me? I … I … don't know what to say."

As Sam's tears fell down her cheeks, she began to cry, and ran out of the room.

"Mommy, Sam is upset!"

"It's okay, baby, Mommy will go and talk to her. You stay here and watch Molly, okay."

Alexis walked to Sam's room and found her sitting on the bed crying.

She knelt down in front of Sam. "Honey, what's wrong?"

Sam looked at Alexis. "I'm sorry, I'm just a little overwhelmed."

"Honey, I'm sorry we caught you off guard, but I missed your first 27 birthdays. I didn't want to miss another one."

"Oh no, Mom, I'm not mad, oh my God, no," Sam said as she took Alexis's hand. "It's just … it's just ..." Sam stammered.

"What, baby, what is it?"

"No one has ever given me a party, let alone a surprise party. I just can't believe that someone is doing something special for me. I have never felt this much love in my life. I always feel like someone is going to say, "Not so fast, Sam," and then rip it away from me."

"Oh, sweetie," Alexis said with a bit of sadness. "I can promise you something: you will never have to worry about not being loved ever again. Your sisters and I love you so much. You are a part of us and we are never going to let you go. I know that you had a hard life growing up, and you have had to overcome tremendous odds, but you are my daughter, and I am so proud of you."

"I love you too, Mom."

Alexis pulled Sam into her arms and ran her fingers through her hair just as she had done to Molly that same morning.

"Okay … are you feeling better?"

"Yes."

"Enough to go mingle with all those people who came to wish you a happy birthday?"

"I think so."

"Okay then, let's go … we have a whole house of hungry party people!"

Sam smiled as Alexis took her by the hand and led her back into the living room.

Three hours later Alexis and Sam were walking back into the living room after putting Kristina and Molly to bed.

"Wow. I can't believe it took three stories to get those two to sleep tonight."

"Well, it was a long day, but they were so riled up … probably from all of the sugar."

Alexis laughed. "That cake was very good."

"Yeah, I know. It was really good. Thanks again for the party. It was so much fun. But you look tired … I should probably be getting back home. I have something I need to do."

"Honey, why don't you just spend the night and then you can do whatever you need to do in the morning?"

"No, I really need to do it today …"

Sam paused for a moment before continuing, "I want to go and visit my daughter. It's days like these that I really miss her."

"I know you do, sweetie. I can't even imagine what you are feeling right now."

"Mom, would you like to go with me? She was your granddaughter."

"Oh, honey, of course I'd love to go with you. Viola should be here any minute. As soon as she gets here, we'll go, but only if you promise to come back and spend the night."

"Deal," Sam said as she smiled at her mother.

Twenty minutes later Sam and Alexis were at the cemetery. Each woman was holding a bouquet of flowers. Sam walked over to Danny's grave and laid down his favorite flowers. Sam knelt beside the grave and just sat quietly, remembering all of the good times she had shared with her brother. Alexis stood behind Sam, as she remembered the time Sam begged her to save Danny's life. Alexis was so lost in thought that she didn't realize that Sam was standing beside her.

"Mom, I know what you're thinking. I know that I blamed you for Danny's death and that was so unfair of me. I was just so upset because Danny and Jason were the only family I had left … Or that's what I thought. But I know that Danny is in a better place now, and I know that he is watching over my daughter."

Alexis began to cry as Sam gripped her hand. "Come on, Mom, let's go meet your granddaughter."

Alexis and Sam walked to a smaller tombstone. They knelt down, and Alexis laid the flowers on the grave.

"Hi, baby girl, it's Mama. I have someone that I want you to meet. This is your grandmother. Her name is Alexis and you would have loved her. She is smart, witty, and beautiful, and if you were here with us now, she would be teaching you to read, preparing you for early admission to Harvard."

"Yale," Alexis responded, "my granddaughter would be going to Yale. You know, little one, I will always be grateful to you because you saved my daughter. I know it's not fair because your mommy and I would rather have you with us, but I know that you will always be protecting your mommy, me, and your aunts. We love you and someday, I promise you, we will all be together again."

Sam pulled Alexis in for a hug, and the two women held onto each other, giving and accepting support that didn't need words.

Upon arriving home, Alexis made tea, and mother and daughter made themselves comfortable on the sofa, talking with ease.

At one point during their conversation Alexis purposely looked at Sam. "Honey, I know that the doctors said that you would never be able to have a baby, but I don't want you to give up hope."

"But, Mom, I've had second and third opinions, and they all agree."

"Sweetheart, we never know what medical breakthroughs they might make in the future. I know for a fact that one day I will be holding my granddaughter. I just don't want you to ever give up."

"Granddaughter, huh?" Sam replied. "You seem to know what's going to happen down the road."

"I'm your mother. I know all and see all, and if I say that you will have a child someday, then I mean it."

Sam smiled. "Okay, I won't give up hope. Thank you for today; you will never know how much it meant to me."

Alexis pulled Sam in for a hug. "You're welcome, and thank you for my day. I love you so much; I hope you know that."

"I do," Sam replied as she clung to Alexis. "I love you too."

Alexis and Sam held each other until they both fell asleep in each other's arms.

*--Two years later--*

"Happy Mother's Day! This is for you," Sam said as she handed Alexis a simple, white envelope.

"Thank you, honey," Alexis replied as she lovingly ran her hand over Sam's cheek.

Reaching inside the envelope, Alexis's hand held some sort of digital image.

"Honey … uh … what is this?"

"My sonogram. Mama, I'm pregnant."

"You're what?" Alexis asked, shocked.

"I'm pregnant … about three months. Dr. Lee called this morning."

"Baby, oh my God … my baby is going to have a baby. I'm going to be a grandmother. Oh, sweetheart, come here," Alexis said as she held her arms open.

Alexis held Sam in her embrace for a few long moments. "Oh my God, baby, this is just the best present you could ever give me."

"I was shocked too. I didn't believe Dr. Lee, but the baby is healthy, and she believes that I will carry her to term. I'm just so happy."

"Oh, baby, I'm happy for you too. Nobody deserves this more than you."

"Mom, you're the one that told me never to give up. You told me two years ago on Mother's Day that I would be a mother. I'm so excited, and Lucky is just bouncing off the walls."

Alexis held up her hand. "Wait a minute, back the truck up; did you say her?"

"I don't know … did I?" Sam said with a sly smile.

"Samantha Davis Spencer, answer the question! Did you say her?"

Sam smiled. "Yes, we are going to have a little girl, and we already have a name for her."

"You already named her?"

"Well, Lucky and I discussed it and well … we decided to name our little girl after our mothers, so we picked Lauren Alexandria Spencer."

"Oh my God, I love it! Oh my God, we have to tell the girls. They will be so excited. Oh, baby, we have so much to do. We have to get the nursery ready. Oh, I'm sorry, you should really be doing all of that with Lucky."

Sam took Alexis' hand. "Mom, I need you. I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm so scared, and I need you to help me. Please, will you help me?"

"O, baby, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love you."

"I love you too, Mama," Sam said, as mother and daughter embraced again.

The End
