Love In the First Degree

Part 1

Her kiss was the most seductive, sensual, breath stealing thing to ever happen to him.

And, by far, the most surprising too. It shocked the hell out of him that they ended up in a drunken lip lock at the police station Christmas party.

Even as his hands roamed over the back of her dress, tugging her indecently closer to him until her breasts were mashed against his chest, and her tongue swept deliciously through his mouth, he still found it hard to believe this was actually happening to him.

Malcolm Scorpio had resigned himself to being officially done with romance forever. He no longer had the time or the energy for it anymore. Just trying to keep track of his girls' love lives was enough to wear him out totally on most days. Besides, he had suffered way too many heartbreaks in his life already and wasn't up for another one ever again. His work kept him busy. He wasn't about to try online dating or the bar scene. He didn't miss sex ... that much ... okay, that last one was a lie, but the rest were true.

He had plenty of excuses and what he considered good reasons to never date again. Felicia was one of them. Part of his heart would always belong to his ex-wife and former best friend.

All his very logical reasons didn't stop him from flirting with Alexis Davis, a woman he never saw as anything other than her job. She was the District Attorney-the same as Scott had once been, as Ric, as Dara-and then she showed up at the party not dressed in her usually sensible suit but instead in a little black dress, simple but on her ... so freaking hot. He'd never seen her looking that out-of-the-world sexy before.

He was already three glasses of spiked punch in so he told her so.

"You should come to work everyday in that outfit."

Alexis was startled. She looked herself up and down. Then looked behind her. "Are you ... speaking to me?" She pointed at herself.

"You look fantastic, Ms. ADA."

"I do?" She smiled. "Well, thank you. I almost didn't come tonight. I was supposed to meet Diane for a drink but she cancelled when I was halfway to the Metro Court already so I thought ... why not stop by the office party? I guess I'm a little overdressed, but Kate loaned me this dress, and I wasn't about to miss a chance wear it out. It's from Frederico's winter wear cocktail line and it's sold out in every boutique from here to San Francisco. It's quite a coup to be able to wear it."

"Yeah?"

"You really don't care about fashion, do you?"

"It's more my daughter's thing."

"Which one?"

"Maxie. She has dreams of running off to New York City and being a designer. I told her she can be one right here. I'll make the garage her studio."

"It's hard to let them go off on their own once they grow up, isn't it?"

"My girls aren't grown up yet."

"Isn't the youngest in college already?"

"Yes, but ..."

She smiled, sympathizing with him, and he wondered how that smile had never affected him before. At that moment, it made his heart race.

He chuckled. "I guess you're right."

"I suppose I should get myself a cup of punch. How bad is it this year?"

"Not bad at all. Garcia got the recipe from his wife instead of just dumping whatever he could find in it like he did last year."

She was just about to walk away when she turned and spotted Ric walking in, looking all smug and self satisfied, with Leyla Mir on his arm. Alexis spun back around and said, between her gritted teeth. "He must be joking."

"Lansing just never quits pushing his luck, does he?"

"Never. How old do you think she is? She looks younger than Sam. You know if he wants to embarrass himself, I don't care. Why does he have to come into my job and embarrass me too? But who am I? Just the ex-wife who the whole world knows he cheated on twice, both with younger women, and now he's dating a grade schooler." She shook her head in disgust. "I need something way stronger than punch right about now."

"Come with me."

"Hmmm? Sneaking me out the back door? That would be even more humiliating."

"Alexis, he's the asshole around here. What he does or doesn't do ... don't reflect on you none. But since you won't be able to relax with him around, join me in my office for some wine. Harper, the new guy, gave me a bottle."

"Kissing up to the boss."

"He didn't make detective by being a dumb ass."

They headed to his office and cracked open the wine. After half a bottle, Alexis was deep into telling him a story about getting into a knock down, drag out fight with Diane over a pair of shoes at a half-off sale. She started to laugh and Mac found it the sexiest laugh he had heard in years.

He stared deep into her eyes. She was not a woman to be messed with. She came from a lethal family, she dated lethal men, she was lethal herself ... a killer ... and yet none of that scared him off. In his younger years, he was much, much worse than any Cassadine or any mobster. He didn't kill for revenge or to protect his business or family. He killed because those were his orders. That's what he got paid to do, and he was good at it. It mattered not who his target was, and there were never any tears shed for the ones who died. He had been cold and heartless ... before he was a father, before his heart broke open and fell in love with three little girls, before he was finally called Daddy by Georgie-years and years after he felt like one already. So he knew both sides of the coin, just like Alexis did. He knew about being cold and dangerous, brutal and cruel, and he knew about trying to protect the world from that kind of person...trying to make it better for all the little girls out there. There was a lot he had in common with Alexis, though he never stopped to think about it before. Even in that moment, it was only a distant thought in the way, way back of his mind ... what was in the front of his mind was that she was gorgeous and he really wanted to kiss her.

Alexis' laugh turned into a chuckle and then she became self-conscious, because Mac was staring so intently at her. "What? Do I have something on my face?"

"No, you look great."

"You say that like you mean it. If you're still worried that I'm feeling like the old, frumpy, discarded ex of Ric's, don't be. Because I'm past that now. Or I will be. A little more wine and it will be completely blurred."

"Lansing was a fool to let you get away."

"I tell him that all the time." She smiled again and then leaned slightly closer to him, as he sat on the edge of his desk. "Felicia wasn't too smart to let you get away either."

"You think?"

"You are clearly one of the last sane men left in Port Charles who also still has his looks."

"I've never seen you drunk before but I like it."

"I'm tipsy, not drunk." She leaned even closer to him.

"Whatever you say," he murmured, and moved his lips within a breath of hers.

"Commissioner ..." she whispered, "are you about to kiss me?"

"Any objections?"

"Proceed."

And then his mouth was on hers and Mac forgot all those stupid excuses why he never wanted to get involved with another woman again. Because kissing Alexis Davis was the hottest experience he'd had in years.

With his lips still on hers, Mac pushed files off his desk and laid Alexis on top of it. She moaned into his mouth. He started to kiss her neck, while whispering how hot and beautiful and amazing he found her.

The door opened and they heard Lucky Spencer say, "Boss, Liz sent you brownies-oh! Um ... sorry ..." He started to cough, like he was choking on his own tongue and the door slammed close.

Mac reluctantly eased away from Alexis. She looked flushed and breathless. She said "Well ... that should make interesting fodder for the gossip mill around here. Mac, I'm so sorry."

She sat up and fixed her clothes.

"Don't be sorry. Spencer will keep his mouth shut unless he wants crossing guard duty again."

Alexis smiled, shakily. "So ... what were we just doing?"

"Fooling around."

"We don't fool around ... normally, I mean. We never have before and that is probably wise since we work together and all. We really wouldn't want to make an awkward workplace environment." She stood up and smoothed her skirt. "I should get home. Molly wakes up at the crack of dawn so it will be an early morning for me."

"Well, Merry Christmas, Ms. ADA."

"Merry Christmas, Commissioner." Alexis headed for the door, opened it, and then shut it and turned back around quickly. "And one more thing!" she said in a rush of words. "You are a fantastic kisser! Just between you and me." With that she hurried out the door, leaving Mac chuckling.

I'm gonna kiss her again, he thought to himself. That was way too good to be a one time thing.
