part 7

Sonny, Michael, and Morgan had left hours ago, Kristina had been dropped off at Molly's, and she was now alone. The quiet emptiness of her apartment was unsettling. Alexis missed the boys; she missed Sonny, and her daughter.

"Lucy it's me. What does my schedule look like for today?" She asked calling into the office. "Ok. Do me a favor and reschedule those appointments for tomorrow, or whenever it's convenient for them, and give my sincerest apologies for the short notice. I have a family emergency."

She drew herself a hot bath, and slipped into the fragrant bubbles. Alexis turned on her favorite CD, lit a few candles, and relaxed with a smile. It was going to be a great day. After her bath she put on her favorite pair of jeans, a red cashmere sweater, and a killer pair of black boots. She grabbed her car keys, and drove to Port Charles. Alexis arrived just in time for the start of Michael's play. She looked around the dimly lit auditorium, and finally spotted Sonny. He was sitting down front with Morgan in his lap. She came down the aisle, and put her hand on his knee. "I'm not too late am I?" Alexis asked as she took the vacant chair next to him.

"Nope." He said taking her hand and leaning over to kiss her cheek. The curtain opened and illuminated the crowd. Michael knew his father would be front and center. He acknowledged his presence briefly, but did a double take as he noticed the woman sitting next to him. Michael smiled and then immediately on cue began his lines, all traces of his carefree youth gone, as he became engrossed in reciting Shakespeare's words.

"Romeo and Juliet. How appropriate." Alexis whispered in Sonny's ear and smiled against it. "I'm crazy about you."

Michael made an excellent Romeo, and it was quite obvious he was more than a little enamored of his Juliet. They all had gone to Kelly's afterwards for a late lunch and Alexis asked him about her. "So spill it. You like this girl right."

"A little."

"I think you like her more than a little."

"He loves her." Morgan teased.

"What do you know about love shrimp? Olivia is cool, and right now we're just friends."

"Friends is a great place to start." Alexis said as she glanced at Sonny and took his hand underneath the table.

"Yea, and don't push too hard. It'll all happen naturally if it's meant to." Sonny added.

"Ok, jeez enough with the advice." He said.

"I need to go to the bathroom." Morgan whispered.

"Come on I'll take you." The two boys left the table, so Sonny and Alexis had a minute to talk.

"So how'd Carly react when you brought them home?"

"She wasn't there. Bobbie said she didn't come home last night. I'm sure she's with some guy or another. I can't keep up with who she's seeing anymore, and I don't care too. At least she has the good sense not to bring the losers home."

"That's true. Did I mention I missed you terribly?"

"How pathetic are we? Five hours and apart and we're both a mess." He said.

"Is it always going to be like this?" Alexis asked.

"Probably." Sonny leaned over and planted a soft wet one firmly on her lips just in time for Carly to see as she walked in.

"Great! This is a perfectly horrible ending to a perfectly horrible day!"

"It's only three in the afternoon Carly." She said looking her over. Carly's clothes were rumpled and obviously what she had worn the day before. Her mascara was smudged and her hair was in serious disarray. All in all she looked like hell, and someone had definitely worked her over in the sexual sense, but clearly it hadn't helped her mood any.

"OH shut up! Where are my kids Sonny!"

"Carly!" Bobbie exclaimed.

"Not now mother."

"They're our kids, and they are in the bathroom. Sit down and quit causing a scene."

"Fine." She said taking a seat. "So where's your little bastard?"

Alexis was up and out of her chair and in Carly's face within seconds. "I suggest you shut your filthy mouth, or I'll do it for you." Alexis had hold of her chin and Carly ripped her face away violently in defiance.

"She's not worth it, and lord knows nothing any one can say or do is going change her...unfortunately." Sonny said letting Alexis take care of the situation.

"Mom!" Morgan yelled as he ran towards the table. Alexis slowly backed away and sat down.

"Hey baby boy!" Carly said. Michael rolled his eyes at his mother's false pretense of actually missing them and took a seat.

"I'm not a baby. I'm seven."

"I know. I know."

"I had a great time in the city. Alexis took me to a magic shop, and let me buy lots of tricks. You want to see one?" He asked.

"No that's ok." She sneered in Alexis' direction.

"I'd love to see it again Morgan. I think you're even better at it now than I am." Alexis said.

"Ok." He said happily at someone showing genuine interest in him. "Give me a quarter." She placed it in his palm and proceeded to let him work his magic.

"Dude Morg that is still so cool." Michael said.

"I'm impressed." Sonny said.

"Hey! Can I get my quarter back?" Alexis teased. Morgan smiled at Alexis and backed up to sit on her knee.

"Thanks for letting us come and stay with you." He said.

"You're welcome. I had a great time."

"Thank you for coming to my play Alexis. It means a lot."

"You're welcome Michael. You're quite the thespian." She said.

"Dad are we going to stay with Alexis next weekend too?" Morgan asked.

"Sure if you want to."

"Yeah!"

"Like hell they are! I don't want them anywhere near that bitch ever again."

"Carly!" Sonny shouted in full-blown rage. "Alexis take the kids outside please."

"Dad wait! Mom outside now!" His face was the color of molten lava, and the anger was coming off of him in waves. Michael didn't give his mother a choice. He took her by the arm and led her outside.

"You'd better have a damn good explanation for humiliating me this way you insolent snot!" She yelled shrugging off the young man's grip.

"Humiliating you? What about us? Look at you! It is obvious what you've been doing all night. You don't give a damn about what happens to either of us. We're nothing but people you tolerate, so Dad's money keeps rolling in monthly to support your self-indulgent lifestyle. When was the last time you ever gave any thought to how we feel about having you as a mother? Alexis came to my play at school, and I didn't even have to ask her. You've never taken any interest in anything Morgan or I do, or shown us affection that wasn't a display for someone else's benefit? You're a horrible mother and I wish you weren't mine! I hate you! I hate you!" He screamed as he took off down the pier.

"Alexis can you go after him?" Sonny asked as he tried to calm Morgan down. "Damn you Carly." He cursed silently. Alexis blew past Carly who stood immobile as all the things Michael said sank in.

Alexis found him sitting on a bench head in hands. "Hey."

"I won't apologize to her for what I said. I meant every word." He said continuing to stare at the ground.

"No one's asking you to. I believe it's always best to be honest."

"Why'd we get stuck with her? Why couldn't you have been my Mom?"

"Because you wouldn't be you sweetheart, and I think you're absolutely perfect just the way you are."

"You've been more of a mother to me in the last three days than she has in my entire life. She doesn't love us."

"I'm glad you feel that way, and I think she loves you very much, but just doesn't know how to show it."

"Don't you think she could have at least tried? I would have at least known she was making the effort."

"We don't always get the best lot in life. Unfortunately we have to take the good with the bad, and that includes our parents. It doesn't mean we have to like it, but you do what you can with what you got, and try to rise above it. I had a stepmother growing up that was really mean to me. She used to lock me in the closet and send me to be without supper, and call me names all the time. I made myself a promise that when I grew up and had children I'd do everything differently, and would never make my child, any child feel unwanted or unloved." She said.

"What about your Dad?"

"He loved me, but like your mom didn't know how to show it. Now your father he knows how to show his love for you and Morgan."

"Can I come live with you, Dad, and Kristina?"

"I don't see why not? I'd love to have you there, but ultimately it's up to your mother. "What about Morgan?" Alexis asked.

"He can come too can't he?"

"Of course, but what if he doesn't want too? It's a sticky situation. Your mother has custody and doesn't like me very much that's for sure."

"That's because you make him happy. She doesn't like to see people happy. Can Dad ask for custody?" Michael asked.

"Yes, but your mom might fight him on it, and it could take months, maybe longer to get it all worked out."

"I'll talk to them both. I think I can convince them this is best for everybody, and if Morgan wants to stay with Mom and Grandma he can."

"Well ok then. Shall we head back?"

"Yea, lets get it over with."

Carly stood rooted to the spot where Michael had left her. She was cold, and silent as Alexis went back inside and left Michael to talk with her once more.

"So how'd it go?" Sonny asked as Morgan reached out for Alexis. She took the little boy into her arms, and held him as he clung to her.

"Good." She said rubbing his back. "I think we're going to need a bigger place. Possibly one with four bedrooms and at least that many bathrooms."

"We will? Why?"

"Oh I'm sure Michael will fill you in on all the details soon enough."

"You're serious about this?" Sonny asked.

"Yea."

"What about school? What about your girlfriend?"

"I can go to school there. The schools for the arts there are so much better, and Olivia is my friend. If that's meant to be it'll happen."

"This is insane, and your mom is willing to let you go?"

"Yea if you have the papers drawn up, she'll sign em for both Morgan and I."

"Let me talk to Morgan and see what he wants to do. You two stay here." Sonny said still not believing what he was hearing. He took Morgan to the park, and they sat down on the swings. "Morgan how would you like to come to New York and live with me and Alexis?"

"All the time?"

"Yea all the time."

"What about Mommy?"

"Mommy will stay here."

"Can I still see her when I want too?" He asked.

"Sure. Anytime you just tell me when."

"Does Mommy want me to go?"

"Mommy just wants you to be happy, and she thinks you'd be happier living with me in New York."

"Ok."

"Ok." He sighed as they walked back to Kelly's. He sent Morgan inside to sit with Michael, and motioned for Alexis to come outside.

"Will you draw up the papers for me?"

"Of course. You ok?"

"Yea. This definitely isn't how I saw this day playing out." Sonny pulled her into a long hug.

"I never should have got it in my head to come to Michael's play."

"Don't ever think that. He was glad that you were there for him."

"Kristina's going to excited and shocked. It's like BAM instant family." She said.

"Are you sure you're ok with all of this?"

"I'm perfect with all this, and as long as I have you by my side it's even more perfect."

"I love you Alexis."

"I love too Sonny."

They stopped at the brownstone and collected some of the boys' things. Clothes, toys, books, and video games to take back with them. Carly sat stoically on the couch as the made several trips to Sonny's car, and Alexis' SUV loading the items in. When it was time to say good-bye they waited outside for Michael and Morgan.

"You're doing the right thing Mom. For us and for yourself." He said kissing her cheek, and turning to leave. She didn't stop him. Morgan put his arms around her waist and squeezed tightly. "Bye Mommy." He said quickly and then ran out of the brownstone.

Alexis wished she wasn't using her hands-free device as Kristina screamed into the phone. "That is so cool Mom! I can't wait until you get back. Come pick me up as soon as you can, and tell daddy and Michael and Morgan I said hi!"

"I will. We'll see you soon baby. Bye." Alexis hung up and dialed Sonny's number.

"So she's excited?" Sonny asked.

"That's an understatement? I'm now deaf in my right ear." Alexis said sarcastically.

"I'm glad....about her excitement not your deafness. You know I've been thinking."

"Oh no not again!"

"Funny. As I was saying, I think if we're going to be raising three kids, don't you think we should be married raising three kids?"

"That was subtle Corinthos."

"Subtlety was never my strong suit."

"Either way if this is a formal proposal I'm not accepting over the phone."

"But you are accepting?"

"I'll let you know. Goodbye, and watch out; there's a huge pothole up ahead." She said as she went to disconnect the call.

"Hey, Hey wait!"

"Yes dear."

"Never mind I can't say. Kids, virgin ears that sort of thing."

"I guess you'll just have to show me later then won't you?"

"Count on it."

"I am."
