Part 24

“Oh Alexis, I am so sorry! When I came into your sitting room, I thought I saw Sonny on the couch but that must have been just a pile of blankets so I told Nikolas it was okay I’d just come get you in here while he woke up Sonny because the news was so important and oh my god I am so embarrassed. I’ll go now.”

Sonny swallowed the urge to tell Emily to breathe and fastened on the one line of the statement he’d actually understood. “What news is there?”

“Luke’s on the phone,” Nikolas said, gritting his teeth and trying hard not to look directly at the bed. “He wants to tell you what he’s got.”

“Kristina?” Alexis demanded hopefully.

“Not yet,” Nikolas said. “But he’s definitely got a lead!”

Sonny struggled to get his robe on without sending Emily into apoplectic shock and then reached over to slap the speaker button on Alexis’ phone.

“Luke? Sonny. Go.”

“Yeah, man.” The irreverent voice of Luke Spencer boomed across the bedroom. “Lucky and I tracked the kidnapper, Yuri, to this internet place where he sent Alexis an email. We intercepted the message, and it basically said he had Kristina, wasn’t giving her to Helena, and wanted to return her to you.”

Alexis' hope soared. “Then where is she?”

“Hold on there, Princess. We followed him to this town upstate, Brettonville. He goes to this covered bridge to meet this dude with a ponytail Helena musta sent to pick up Krissy. Lo and behold, the Pony Tail dude takes out a gun and pops Yuri.”

Sonny hung his head. “Damn it. Is Yuri dead?”

“Nah, he’s holding on, but it aint looking good. Anyway, Pony Tail dude checks out this little cottage before he leaves the scene of the crime. Lucky and I think that’s where Yuri had stashed the kid. We could see through the window that there were cloth diapers and bowls of food in there. But no kid.”

“So who was staying there watching Kristina while Yuri was out getting popped?” Sonny asked.

“I dunno. Do Nikolas or Alexis know if he has family, close friends?”

“He-he has a wife and kids somewhere in Port Charles,” Alexis stammered. “His family didn’t live with him on our estate, but I do know that he’s married. Nadia, that’s the wife’s name, I think. Oh Luke, I have no idea where we’d find her.”

“Calm down, Princess. The good news is Pony Tail dude didn't find the kid either. And Yuri obviously left her with someone he could trust to treat her right…I’m betting it’s this wife of his, Nadia.”

“But how long can the woman keep my child safe from Helena’s people all by herself?” Alexis wailed.

“She was smart enough to blow that cottage before the Pony Tail dude arrived. I wouldn’t worry right this second. Let’s stay positive.”

“So we need to find Yuri’s wife, Nadia, and we’ll find my daughter?” Sonny asked briskly, his eyes on Alexis.

“That’s it, my friend. So here’s the deal. Lucky’s guarding Yuri in the hospital to make sure Helena doesn’t finish him off before we get some info out of him…that’s if he regains consciousness at all. I’m currently keeping tabs on Pony Tail to see if he leads me to the kid or to my favorite girlfriend—besides you, Alexis—Madame Cassadine. I’ll get in touch if something breaks on this end.”

“I’ll do the same,” Sonny said.

“Stay safe, Luke,” Alexis called out.

“Aww, Alexis, I didn’t know how much you cared,” he cooed. “Uh-oh, Helena’s Boy Toy is on the move again. Gotta go!”

The line went dead and Sonny disengaged the speakerphone. He turned to smile at Alexis who was sitting on her knees on the bed, the blankets wrapped around her.

“It’s good news, baby. Finally.” Then he leaned across and folded her into a tight embrace. “Helena called and taunted the hell out of us, but she may not even have our daughter at all.”

Tears slipped out of the corners of Alexis’ eyes. “Oh, thank God…I’m so relieved,” she breathed fiercely into his neck. He placed a finger beneath her chin, lifted her face to his, and took her lips in a series of brief, sweet kisses. He didn’t care whether her family or the whole world was watching.
