chapter 33 - The Smell of Victory

"Marry me, Sonny."

To say the expression on Sonny's face was shock would be putting it mildly. He stared down at Alexis, his jaw alternately opening and closing. "Did ... " he started, finally finding his voice. "Did you just ask me to marry you?"

Alexis nodded. "I think so."

"You really want to marry me? I mean ... marriage ... commitment ... living together ... " he gestured with his hand. "All that?"

Alexis nodded and let out an exasperated sigh. "Sonny, I've never been in love with someone like I am with you. I know that. We could just go back to Port Charles and listen to everyone grumble and whisper about us and live across the hall from one another and deal with my sister's goofy grin for God knows how long, but I don't want that. I liked this weekend. I liked being here with you, I liked sharing a bathtub with you, I liked sharing a bed with you, I liked ... " She blushed and then smiled. "I liked sharing myself with you. I don't care about a wedding or an elaborate reception. I just want to be with you and I don't want it to end."

Sonny's raised his brows and shook his head in an attempt to process all of this.

"I just ruined it, didn't I?" Alexis responded to his silence.

Sonny focused his attention at her. "No. You didn't ruin anything. I'm just floored at this change in you. That you, Miss Guarded Heart, brought me here, romanced me, told me you loved me ... and now ... that you want to be my wife."

"I know, I'm kind of confused by the sudden burst of bravery myself," Alexis said meekly.

Sonny brought his hand to either side of her face and smiled. "Let's do it. I want to marry you Alexis."

"You mean that?"

Sonny smiled and tugged her waist, pulling her towards him. She came crashing against his chest and he held her there, placing a kiss on her lips, then another. "I've never meant anything more."

They smiled, looking into one another's eyes. Neither one saw in the other any fear or misgivings about spending the rest of their lives together. Sonny dipped his head to the side. "When should we do this?"

"Now ... today."

"On Sunday?"

"You have something against getting married on Sundays?" She tapped his nose with her fingertip. "Sunday is our best day you know."

Sonny laughed. "You don't have to tell me that. But isn't City Hall closed on Sundays?"

Alexis shook her head. "I would think after my fabulous display of being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound this weekend that you would have more faith in my network of connections," she teased.

"Let me guess. There's this judge here in New York and you used to date him in college who wouldn't mind if we popped by his house for a quick marriage." He tapped a finger to his chin.

Alexis rolled her eyes. "What is with you and my past dating history?"

Sonny wrapped his arms around her waist. "Maybe I just don't like to think of any other man ever having done the things to you that I do."

"Believe me, no man could possibly do the things to me that you do," Alexis quipped as she turned a dark shade of red.

Sonny smiled. "Look at that ... a true blushing bride."

Alexis smacked him in the arm. "I know a lot of people in New York from when I lived here. I'll call a judge that I used to clerk for when he was partner at his old law firm. I'm sure he'll marry us and squeeze a license through for us in a hurry ... " she bit her lip. "I just won't tell him who it is I'm marrying."

Sonny looked at her taken aback. "That hurt counselor. I suppose you'll want me to wear a bag over my head during the ceremony too?"

Alexis smiled and touched his face. "No way. I want to look right into those dimples when I tell you I do."

Sonny planted a kiss on her forehead. "Right back at you." He sighed and then realized something. He took hold of her left hand and held it up. "We have to go and get you a ring."

"I don't need ... "

"Yeah you do," he said quashing her not so subtle attempt to avoid wearing a symbol that she belonged to someone.

She gave him a wry smile. "Fine, I'll wear your token of ownership."

"Thank you."

Three hours later Sonny and Alexis were in the back of Sonny's limo heading back to Port Charles as man and wife. Alexis held her hand out and looked at the two rings that now adorned her left hand. "I can't believe we actually did this. Kristina is going to have an aneurysm."

Sonny smiled and wrapped his arm around his wife. "She'll be fine ... and so will everyone else after a while, you'll see." He cast a sidelong glance at her. "So, now for the big question. Where are we going to live?"

Alexis pursed her lips and tapped a finger to her forehead. "Let's see ... that's a tough one. I could choose to live in your penthouse, where you lived with Carly ... or we could live in my penthouse where you once resided with Brenda."

She raised an eyebrow. "Wow ... the endless possibilities."

Sonny laughed and squeezed her closer. "I was thinking that we convert both penthouses into one, completely rehab them and start fresh."

Alexis thought about this for a second. "I like that idea, but what about my sister?"

"I'm thinkng Kristina can fend for herself. I would think she'd go stay at Ned's place don't you?"

"Probably."

"Good, then it's settled. I can call and have a suite set up for us at the PC Hotel while our place is being renovated."

Alexis grimaced. "I don't really want to stay in that hotel. I can call Nicholas and see if he'll let us use the cottage for a while."

"You mean the one Brenda used to live in?" he asked teasingly.

Alexis threw up her hands. "Is there nowhere in Port Charles we can stay without the ghosts of your past love affairs lingering?" She rolled her eyes. "The cottage will be fine."

"Hey."

"What?"

"I love you, Mrs. Corinthos."

"Mrs. Davis-Corinthos and for professional circumstances I will have to remain Alexis Davis ... but I love you too," she replied and placed a kiss on his lips. Sonny responded, deepening the kiss, letting his tongue slide into her mouth. "I think it's time we consummated this marriage," Sonny whispered against her mouth.

Alexis pulled her head back to look at him. "Here?"

"That's what the privacy glass is for."

Alexis snaked her arms around his neck, lowering herself down on the seat, pulling Sonny with her. "Then by all means."
