chapter 28 - Stepping Up to the Plate

Sonny was restless the entire way up to New York. He made several business calls to occupy himself during the ride. Alexis was planning something and he had the distinct idea that it had to do with that big white elephant that they had been ignoring. He closed his eyes and leaned his back on the seat and drummed his fingers nervously on his leg. What was she doing? It was killing him not to know; he was not a patient man.

Finally the limo pulled into the circular drive in front of the Plaza Hotel and Max jumped out and retrieved Sonny's bag from the trunk. Sonny climbed out of the car and started for the hotel entrance.

"Want me to hang around, boss?" Max asked as he handed him his bag at the door.

Sonny nodded. "Yeah, just stay out of sight though. I'll call you if I need you."

Max nodded and watched his boss enter the hotel.

Sonny approached the front desk where a young woman in a white and green uniform smiled pleasantly at him. "Good afternoon Mr. Corinthos. We've been expecting you." She handed him a key and directed him to the elevator where he got in and pressed the button for the Presidential Suite. When the elevator had reached the top floor and the doors opened, Sonny entered the hall and walked to the end of it where the sign on the wall indicated the room was. He inserted the key card into the slot and waited for the little light on the lock pad to turn green.

He entered and was momentarily taken aback by the decadence of the room. "Wow," he said to himself as he looked around. He walked straight ahead to the picture window that led out to the balcony, which held a breath taking view of the New York skyline. Turning back into the room he eyed the two doors to on the left side of the suite. Opening one, he found the rather spacious bathroom complete with an enormous Jacuzzi tub. Opening the other door he found the master bedroom. One large bed was the first thing that loomed out at him. He smiled, thoughts running through his head that could make a polished lady of the evening blush. He moved closer to the bed and observed it. Silver, satin sheets adorned the bed and sitting on top of one of the pillows was a single white rose and a note with his name on it. He picked them both up and read the note.

Sonny,

Change into something very casual . . . like something you might wear to a baseball game for instance, and go back to your limo.

Alexis

Sonny smiled and shook his head. What ever Alexis was doing, it was definitely mysterious and definitely turning him on to no end. He went back into the parlor of the suite and hurried into a pair of jeans and a beige sweater, wasting no time heading back downstairs and to his limo.

Max opened the door for him. "Where to, boss?"

Sonny cocked his head. "Don't know Max," he shrugged and ducked inside the limo. He jumped slightly when he noticed he wasn't alone in the car. He smiled. "Hey."

"Hey yourself," Alexis smiled back at him.

He held up the white rose that he had brought down with him from the room. "I never had a woman give me flowers before," he said as he lightly touched the end of the flower to her nose.

Alexis smiled shyly.

"You know, you're being awfully mysterious," Sonny stated as he sat down beside her.

Alexis raised an eyebrow. "Am I?"

Sonny eyed her curiously. She was dressed in jeans and a brown leather jacket over a white tee shirt, worn brown cowboy boots adorned her feet. He tilted his head. " I can't decide which side of you I find more attractive . . . the business suits or the way you look in denim."

Alexis pursed her lips, suppressing a smile.

"So . . . are you going to tell me what's going on?"

Alexis turned and looked at him as if she had no idea what he was talking about. "Just relax and enjoy the weekend."

"Enjoy the weekend huh?"

She smiled and took his hand. "Trust me."

He looked at their clasped hands and then back to her eyes. "You know I do. So where are we going?"

"Well, you may have heard that the World Series is in town."

"I did hear that somewhere."

She flashed her dimpled grin at him and he could've melted right there. "I happen to have gotten two very excellent seats for the game."

Sonny's jaw went slack. "You're kidding, right?"

"I don't kid," she nudged him in the arm. "You of all people should know that I take my sporting events very seriously."

Sonny was awestruck. He turned himself in his seat so he could face her. "Alexis, ever since I was a little kid I've wanted to see the Yankees play. I never got to. Now I'm going to see the New York Yankees play the New York Mets in the World Series."

Alexis smiled, excited that she could bring such a child like joy to Sonny's face. "Well . . . I guess you had to wait a little longer than most for your childhood dream . . . but you're going to get it today." She lowered her head and looked up at him through her eyelashes. "I hope so anyway."

Sonny blinked a couple of times out of pure disbelief and then squeezed Alexis' hand. "Well, I know. I always dreamed when I was a kid of seeing the Yankees play up close with my best friend." He tilted his head. "Now, it's coming true."

Alexis blushed and nodded. "We're here," she said as the limo turned into the lot and a man holding a flashlight, wearing a bright orange colored vest, waved them through.

They exited the limo and Alexis led him by the hand through the throngs of sports fans adorned with their favorite team's shirts, caps and various flags. They came to a private door away from the other gates that fans entered through. A large man approached them and Alexis gave him a ticket of some sort. The man nodded and unlocked the door. "Enjoy the game."

Alexis smiled. "Thanks, we will."

They walked down a corridor with various doors on it. Sonny stopped at one of the doors marked Players and team personnel only. He pointed to the sign. "That's the locker room," he said in child-like glee.

Alexis smiled even bigger and pulled him along. They rounded a corner where a folding table was set up, several members of the press crowding around it. They approached it and Alexis handed the man at the table the same ticket, he took it and handed her two passes in a plastic pouch. Alexis turned to Sonny and hung one of the passes around his neck, doing the same to herself with the other one.

Sonny looked at her with curiosity. "Where exactly are these seats?"

Alexis winked. "You'll just have to be patient and find out."

Sonny shook his head and they continued walking to another door. Beyond this door was a short hallway with one more door attached to it. Alexis put her hand on the door and stopped, looking at Sonny. "Ready?"

Sonny nodded.

Alexis pulled open the door and Sonny nearly fainted as the breath left his body. "Jesus," he said breathlessly. He looked at Alexis. "How on earth did you get us in here?"

Alexis flashed him the dimples. "I too have connections, Mr. Corinthos."

"Yeah, I guess," he muttered in amazement.

"Well? Are we going to stand here or are we going to go in?"

Sonny took her hand and pulled her forward into the New York Yankees dug out. It was empty at the moment and Sonny took the opportunity to move around it, looking at everything from the rack that held the bats, to the water fountain in the corner. He ran his hand over everything. "Do you know the legends that have stood in this very spot?" he said excitedly.

Alexis raised her eyebrows. "Probably not."

He waved his arms. "Are you kidding? Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford . . . those guys are legends . . . and they all stood in this dug out."

"I've heard of Babe Ruth," Alexis said enthusiastically.

"We're really going to watch the game from inside the dug out?"

Alexis nodded her head. "It would appear so."

"Oh my God," Sonny said in amazement.

They sat down on one end of the bench and Sonny took Alexis' hand in his own. "How did you do this?"

Alexis bit down on the corner of her lip and smiled sheepishly. "I dated someone in law school who works in the Yankees corporate offices now. I called in a favor to him."

Sonny's mouth hung open as he stared at her. "You're amazing, Alexis Davis."

Several minutes later players, coaches, and assorted other people filed into the dug out, ready to take the field for warm ups. Sonny sat in quiet awe as he glanced at the players readying themselves for the game.

They stood as the National Anthem began to play and Sonny had to remind Alexis several times not to sing along, then sat and watched as history unfolded before them.

Alexis even found herself enjoying the game immensely. She tapped Sonny on the shoulder. "It's really more exciting when you're watching it live."

Sonny nodded and turned his eyes back to the game. Alexis' heart swelled as she watched Sonny enjoying himself so openly and freely . . . and she was able to give that to him.

They walked toward down the corridor to their suite, Sonny now adorned in an actual Yankee player's ball cap, carrying a baseball signed by the entire team. He turned it over in his hand. "I'm going to give this to Michael some day when he's older," he beamed.

Alexis hooked her arm through his and squeezed. "I think he'll like that," she said as they approached the room.

Sonny unlocked the door and they stepped inside. Candlelight illuminated the entire room. Sonny turned to Alexis and caught her in his arms. "I meant it when I said you were amazing," he grinned at her. "I had the best time of my life today."

Alexis blushed. "I'm glad," she said quietly.

He looked into her eyes. "That was the best baseball game ever." He shook his head. "Meeting all the players and talking to them during the game . . . it was awesome."

"It was pretty nice."

Sonny's face grew serious. "A little too nice for some of us," he said with a raised eyebrow.

Alexis put a hand to her chest. "Well, if you're referring to that nice young man who took an interest in me . . . "

"That nice young man was Derek Jeter and he's one of the greatest players around." He gave her a crooked grin. "He almost ended his career tonight."

Alexis raised her eyebrows. "I thought he played rather well."

"Yeah? Well, if he tried to make a move on you one more time . . . he wouldn't have been able to hit that homer in the seventh."

Alexis playfully hit his arm. "He was just being nice."

"Alexis, guys don't ask for your phone number when they're just being nice."

"I didn't give it to him."

"Why not?" Sonny asked curiously.

"Well one, he's a little young for me. And two . . . " She lowered her eyes and hesitated. "I wasn't interested."

"Lucky for him," Sonny mumbled.

Alexis laughed. "Why Mr. Corinthos . . . were you jealous?"

Sonny pulled her closer and looked into her eyes. "Yeah," he said quietly as he pressed his lips to hers ever so gently for a moment and then pulled away.

Sonny nodded his head in no particular direction. "Who lit all the candles?"

Alexis shrugged. "Must've been elves."

"Elves huh?"

"Uh huh," Alexis said as she disengaged herself from Sonny's embrace and headed for the bathroom.

"Where are you going?" Sonny asked quizzically.

Alexis stopped briefly and called over her shoulder. "I'm going to take advantage of that rather large Jacuzzi," she said and stepped into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.

Sonny stood in the middle of the room bewildered. Was that her way of saying she didn't want things to go too far tonight? He shook his head. A moment ago he was sure he could see desire in those beautiful brown orbs of hers. He scratched his head and was feeling kind of awkward when the door to the bathroom opened slightly. Alexis stuck her head out, her bare shoulder peeking out from the doorframe as well. She raised an eyebrow. "Do you need an engraved invitation?"

Sonny stared at her, his breath quickening. "Uh . . . no . . . I just . . . "

"Would you mind fixing me a drink before coming in?" she asked casually and shut the door once more.

Sonny smiled and hurried to the bar, fixing them both a glass of rum.

He entered the bathroom; it too filled with lavender scented candles and let his eyes go directly to Alexis who was already situated in the tub, her knees drawn up to her chest.

He moved cautiously into the room and held out her drink. "Rum okay?"

She shook her head. "You know I like rum."

Sonny chuckled. "Yeah." He perused her as she sat in the steamy water, the candlelight bouncing off of her every curve, tiny rivulets of water clinging to her bronzed skin. She had pulled her hair up into a haphazard pile on her head and several strands hung down matted to her sensual neck. She reached out and took her drink from him, taking a sip, her eyes never leaving his. "Coming in?"

Sonny needed no further coaxing. "Oh yeah," he said huskily as he set his drink on the edge of the tub and started removing his clothing.

Alexis smiled slightly and sighed making no effort to conceal her joy in watching Sonny slowly removing articles of clothing from his body. He slipped into the tub in front of her and leaned back sighing when his skin met hers. Her arms snaked around under his arms as she placed both hands flat and caressed his chest, her legs wrapping around his.

"This is nice," Sonny said contently.

He felt Alexis move her face closer to him. "It gets nicer," she cooed softly in his ear.

"I can't wait." He leaned his head back so that his face was right next to hers. "I like this Alexis."

"This Alexis?"

"Yeah."

"And just what Alexis would that be?"

"This bold, sexual, mysterious, full of surprises Alexis."

"Oh, that one."

"How come you never show this side to me back in Port Charles?"

She lightly raked her fingers down his chest and across his stomach. "I thought I did . . . every Sunday."

Sonny moaned. "Yeah, you do. I meant before we started that."

"I guess I needed some inspiration."

He turned his head to look at her. "And have you found it . . . inspiration?"

She nodded. "I found it," she replied as she moved forward and took his mouth with her own, wasting no time plunging her tongue in between his lips, exploring with abandon.

Sonny turned and grabbed her hand, intertwining their fingers together. "Lex . . . "

"Shh," she said placing a finger on his lips. "Just . . . no talking. Not tonight . . . not now."
