chapter 9 - Set Point

Alexis sat in her bed more nervous than she had ever been on a Sunday morning since she and Sonny had begun their little weekly ritual. She had been fine with it initially, but lately she had been noticing subtle changes in the way that things were going, and it was making her on edge. The first time she and Sonny had lost control and given in to lust it was a shock to both of them, neither of them had ever expected to be in that situation with the other, but they both agreed it was no big deal. They were friends, close friends and they were helping one another out. Alexis was fine with that, surprised that she would agree to such a compromise, but fine with it nonetheless. She was a woman after all who had needs. Sonny was a man with similar needs and why not benefit from their mutual situation? Alexis brought her knees to her chest and hugged her arms around them. Things were changing though. After the first time, they both sat on the couch side by side wondering what the hell just happened. Then gradually more and more intimacies were introduced into their weekly endeavors. Hand holding, sitting together during their television viewing time in each other's arms...and then there was last week.

Alexis squeezed her eyes shut as she thought about it. Their normal routine was to go through the guise of watching sports, Sonny would explain it to her and then they would go at it...on the couch...always on the couch. The couch was like a safe haven. It wasn't personal, it wasn't intimate...it was the couch. But last week Sonny had picked her up and carried her to her room. In Alexis' mind they had crossed the boundary of fair play, so to speak. The very thing she feared happened almost immediately. Their usual frenzied tearing off of clothing and the frenetic pace of their encounters slowed down. There were slow, lingering kisses, there was caressing, there was holding...and the thing that scared her the most was that for the first time since they had started sleeping together...they had looked into one another's eyes, and once they did, Alexis was unable to get what she saw in Sonny's eyes out of her mind. There was more than lust or need lingering in his dark pools, there was desire and passion and Alexis had no doubt that he could see it in her own eyes as well. Even scarier than that was right at the height of their passion Sonny had leaned down and whispered in her ear "We're so good together Lex." A chill went up her spine as she remembered his words. And afterwards they had lain in her bed, tangled up in one another for the longest time before she suggested that maybe it was time to get up since Kristina would be home any time. It was lucky she did because no sooner had they dressed and made their way back to the living room, then Kristina and Ned bounded in the door. Even through her sister's incessant chatter about their weekend, and Ned's evil glares towards Sonny, she and Sonny couldn't seem to take their eyes off one another. Something had changed that day, something they would both have to acknowledge and deal with soon. When Sonny finally decided to go back to his own place, Alexis had walked him out into the hallway, shutting the door behind them. They stood there silently for a second before Sonny had leaned forward and placed a kiss on her forehead before entering his apartment.

"We're so good together Lex." Why had he said that? Sonny wondered as he moved about his kitchen preparing omelets for he and Alexis. He hadn't talked to her yet, but he knew she would be over eventually. After last week he knew she'd want to talk. Why had he told her the thought that had popped into his head as they were making love? He shook his head. Because that's how their relationship was. They told each other everything. Except he wasn't supposed to tell her how he was feeling about her. It would scare her. She would run faster than a fox at a hunt. He knew what was going on between them was supposed to be a casual thing, but it had quickly turned into something more. He leaned against his counter and rubbed the stubble on his chin. No, he wasn't going to ruin this. His relationship with her was too important to him. When she came over to his place today, he would act normal. They would watch their sporting event and have their casual sex and that was it. He wasn't going to complicate the good thing that they had going.

He sighed, content with his line of thinking for now and brought the food out to the table. He was about to pick up the phone and call Alexis when a knock sounded at his door. He moved across the room and opened it. A slightly sheepish Alexis stood there looking ravishing as only she could in a pair of jeans and a white sweatshirt. "Hey," he greeted her as he stepped aside, allowing her to enter.

"Hey," she replied back. "I smelled food."

Sonny chuckled. "That stomach of yours has impeccable timing." He gestured to the table. "Sit...it's all ready."

They sat and ate their breakfast quietly, chatting every once in a while about a contract or the current happenings in Port Charles. When they were done, Alexis helped him clear the dishes before they took their seats on the couch.

"So what's on the agenda for today?" Alexis asked casually.

Sonny flipped on the television. "Don't know...let's see." He scanned the channels until he came upon a sporting event. Any sporting event that would take his mind off of the fact that he wanted to grab Alexis and take her upstairs and make love to her all day long. He finally landed on a women's professional beach volley ball tournament.

He turned his head towards Alexis. "Volleyball?"

Like it matters, Alexis thought silently. "Sure."

"Beer?"

"It's ten-thirty in the morning Sonny."

"Right, no beer. Can I get you anything?"

Yeah, you...naked on a platter. Alexis shook her head. "No, I'm fine," she replied as she settled into the couch cushions and placed her feet up on the coffee table.

Sonny gestured to her feet, which were bare. "You forget your shoes today?"

She wiggled her toes and smiled. "Nope. Just wasn't in the mood to put them on."

Any chance you weren't in the mood to put on undergarments today? Sonny smiled. "Whatever makes you comfortable," he said as he leaned back, casually wrapping the customary arm around her. She snuggled closer to him.

"So...leave it to you to find a sport where scantily clad women are jumping up and down on a beach."

"It's a sport."

"Right. I know that."

"Besides, I'm not watching it for the women."

Alexis guffawed. "I believe you. You're not watching it for the women."

Sonny nudged her playfully, flashing the dimples. "You know me. I'd much rather undress a woman who's fully dressed...like in a business suit...with my eyes...it's more of a turn on that way."

Alexis blushed and looked away from him. "I get it. Women who walk around in snowsuits turn you on."

"No, sexy women who don't realize how sexy they are turn me on."

Alexis shook her head. "So how does this sport work."

"This one's pretty easy to pick up on. It's simple. You have the two teams there...in beach volleyball you usually only have two players per team. Regular court volleyball is played with six players."

"Do they wear thong bikinis in regular court volleyball?" Alexis mused.

"Not quite. Anyway, first they volley for the serve then the game begins. You can only score if you're the team serving the ball."

"So how do you score?"

Sonny looked at her and smiled devilishly. "Well me? I prefer to cook a lady a meal...."

Alexis smacked him in the abdomen. "You know what I mean."

Sonny snickered at her embarrassment. "If they miss the ball...if they don't hit it back over the net...if the team that's being served to hits the ball back over the net, but it goes out of bounds...those are all ways of scoring points."

Alexis nodded. "Seems simple enough." She pointed to the screen. "Why did they just lose the ball...it went over the net?"

"They were serving and the ball touched the net. The ball can't touch the net on a serve."

"Who makes up all these sporting rules?"

"The associations who run them I guess," he said as he cupped his hand around her shoulder and massaged it gently.

Alexis felt a small electrical current running up and down her spine. He was doing it again. "Oh..."

Sonny smiled to himself knowing full well that he was getting to her. After several weeks of getting to know Alexis on the most personal level, he was starting to learn her sexual ticks. He stopped his ministrations of her shoulder and moved his hand slightly to the right, grazing her breast through her sweatshirt. This took her by surprise and she jumped, looking over to him.

Once their eyes met it was all over. Their eyes locked and they read one another like a book. Sonny wasted no time leaning in and taking her mouth with his own. Alexis melted into him as his tongue darted around her mouth provocatively.

Sonny pulled his mouth from hers and moved down to her neck. Her neck...her weak spot he was finding out. He kissed and nuzzled her neck several times before moving his head and taking her earlobe gently between his lips. She gasped as a million currents went through her body. "Sonny," she said almost breathlessly.

"I want to take you upstairs," Sonny whispered into her ear.

Alexis wrapped both arms around his neck and allowed Sonny to lift her off of the couch, her legs wrapping around his torso as they made their way to his room, kissing passionately the entire way.

An hour later Alexis was lying on top of Sonny, their bodies touching from head to toe. Sonny moved his hands up around her back and gently raked his fingers up and down. She laid her head on his chest and sighed. "God I love sports."

Sonny gave a small laugh. "Is that what we're calling it?"

Alexis lifted her head and looked at him and smiled. "I was referring to...never mind." She stared at his eyes for a second. "What are we calling it?"

Sonny's heart lurched in his chest. Here it comes, he thought. "You mean what are we doing here?"

Alexis nodded.

Sonny shrugged his head. "I could have sworn we've been having sex..."

"You know what I mean. You've felt it too haven't you?" she asked, her eyes full of intensity.

He nodded. "I've noticed things changing, yeah." He brought a hand up and brushed a strand of hair from her face, tucking it behind her ear. "I don't know what to make of it."

"Sonny, I'm starting to get confused," she stated honestly and rolled off of him, curling up at his side.

He pulled her closer to him. "Lex, I'll be honest with you. Things are changing and I don't know if I'm ready to deal with that yet."

"Neither am I."

Sonny nodded. "But I don't want it to stop."

"Neither do I."

"So...the way I see it is we just keep going the way they've been going and deal with it when we're ready to."

Alexis propped herself up on her elbow. "And just ignore the big elephant standing in the corner for now."

Sonny chuckled. "Yeah."

Alexis thought about this for a second before replying. "All right. I can deal with that."

"Good, me too." He stroked her cheek with his finger. "Besides...we're having fun right?"

Alexis sighed. "We're having fun."

Sonny flashed the dimples and ran his hand slowly up the side of her body from her knee to just under her arm.

"Counselor?"

"Hmm?"

"I believe it's your turn to try to score."

Alexis smiled. "My serve huh?" she purred as she ran two fingers down his stomach, continuing Southbound.

He grabbed her hand and pulled it away from his body. "Uh uh uh, no touching the net on a serve."

Alexis smiled seductively as she reclaimed her position on top of him. "I'll try to remember that."
