chapter
7 - Seventh
Inning Stretch
Alexis
slid from her bed Sunday morning and began her weekly ritual of
worrying about her inevitable encounter with her landlord/client.
It had more than two months of them getting together literally and
figuratively on Sundays under the guise of Sonny teaching Alexis
about sports. Alexis knew in her mind that they shouldn't be doing
this, that it could only lead to trouble later down the line, but
when she was with him, and he was touching her and kissing her,
her body took total control and shut out any thoughts of being logical.
She
made her way down the stairs and flipped on the television...and
strangely enough...found herself turning to the sports channel.
She went to the kitchen, looked at the empty coffeepot and sighed
remembering Kristina had gone away for the weekend with Ned. She
would have to fend for herself...she looked to the door...or call
Sonny. She got up and moved to the phone, placing her hand on the
cradle and stopped, shaking her head. This was crazy...she knew
damn well she wasn't calling him for coffee. She moved away from
the phone and back to the couch and flopped down onto it. She was
about to contemplate going over to Kelly's when the infamous knock
sounded at her door. Alexis rose to answer it, strangely disturbed
at the little leap her heart did when she heard his knock.
She
opened the door to find Sonny standing there with a tray in his
hand. "Hey," he said casually.
Alexis
nodded at him and averted her eyes to the tray in his hand. "Tell
me you read my mind and that's breakfast under that lid."
Sonny
grinned and lifted the lid on the plate revealing an omelet and
bacon. "Hungry?"
Alexis
smiled and opened the door wider to let him enter.
She
watched as he crossed the room and set the tray down on the coffee
table as opposed to the dining room table. "You don't like
eating at the table any more?"
He
stood upright and gave her the dimples. "You know...we usually..."
he rubbed his cheek. "We usually sit in front of the t.v on
Sundays."
Alexis
nodded. "Uh huh. Just out of curiosity...would you're delivering
breakfast to my place have anything to do with the fact that my
sister is out of town?"
Sonny
sniffed back a laugh and raised his eyebrows at her accusingly.
"Would your casually mentioning the other day the fact that
Kristina would be out of town this weekend mean anything?"
Alexis
looked indignant. "Certainly not."
Sonny
shrugged. "Then my motives are just as pure as yours."
Alexis
stared at him for a second and narrowed her eyes before moving to
the couch and sitting down in front of her breakfast that Sonny
had now carefully lain out. "Let's just eat."
Sonny
sat down and the two of them began to enjoy their meal. Sonny nodded
at the television. "I see you have the sports channel already
on."
Alexis
swung her head to him. "I just flipped the television on before
you knocked. I didn't change the channel yet."
Sonny
grinned and reached for the remote. "There's a re-broadcast
of the Yankees game on."
Alexis
raised an eyebrow. "Yankees?"
Sonny
lowered his head and shook it. "She doesn't even know who the
Yankees are."
Alexis
shrugged her shoulders. "I know they won the Civil War."
Sonny
slapped his palm to his forehead and leaned back on the couch. "Yeah...well
later on they formed a baseball team and play here in New York,"
he chided as he flipped through channels until he found the game.
"Good, they're still in the first inning." He cast a glance
at Alexis who already had her mouth open, forming a sentence. He
held up his hand. "There's nine innings in a game. An inning
lasts until both team gets three outs...there's no time limit."
Alexis
nodded and settled back into the couch where Sonny's arm immediately
wrapped around her shoulders. She didn't fight it as she leaned
into him, resting her head on his shoulder. An hour and a half later
the game was in full swing and Sonny had done more explaining about
the game of baseball then he ever did to the PCPD about any of his
wrong doings.
Alexis
pursed her lips and knitted her eyebrows as she concentrated on
the game. "So...he can run to the next base even though nobody
has hit the ball yet?"
Sonny
nodded. "It's called stealing a base."
Alexis
lightly knocked Sonny in the ribs with her elbows. "Leave it
to you to find a sport with stealing in it."
"You
wound me counselor. I don't steal."
"That
depends on whose definition of stealing you use." She pointed
to the television. "What I don't get is the balls and strikes
thing."
Sonny
ignored the obvious opening she had left him and explained. "Okay...see...there's
the batter's box." He pointed out the chalked outline on the
screen. "The batter stands there and the pitcher's job is to
throw the ball into the strike zone. That's usually between the
knees of the batter and his chest. If he doesn't swing at the pitch,
and the ball is in the strike zone, it's a strike. If he swings
and misses, it's also a strike. Three strikes and you're out...now
a ball is when the pitch is thrown outside the strike zone and the
batter doesn't hit it...but if swings and misses...even if it's
a ball...it's a strike."
Alexis
bit down on her bottom lip. "Okay...so what is going on when
they hit the ball...it flies away and then the batter goes back
to the..." she thought for a second..."the batters box...and
picks up his bat again?"
Sonny
tilted his head and smiled thoughtfully. She completely turned him
on when she was trying so hard to comprehend something that was
new to her. Not only was she sexy physically, but Sonny honestly
believed that it was the way her brain worked that got to him the
most.
Alexis
gave her head a quick shake. "What?"
Sonny
chuckled. "You're so damn sexy you know that?"
Alexis
blushed and tilted her head down momentarily. She looked at him
out of the corner of her eye and sucked in the corner of her bottom
lip between her teeth. "You didn't answer my question."
She cleared her throat.
Sonny
moved closer to her and took her arm at the wrist, holding up slightly,
inspecting it as if it was brand new to him. "That means they
hit the ball in foul territory...out of bounds so to speak,"
he said as he stroked her soft skin right above her pulse. "You
didn't answer my question either," he said, his voice getting
husky as he looked into her eyes.
She
met his gaze. "I don't remember the question," she said
letting a quick burst of air escape her lips as Sonny continued
to brush the skin on her arm with feathery strokes, sending shivers
down her spine.
Sonny
tugged on her arm and pulled her onto his lap, encircling his arms
around her and moving his mouth to her neck. Barely touching her
he pressed his lips to her neck, letting just the tip of his tongue
graze her hot skin. He smiled as she shuddered beneath his touch.
"I asked you if you knew how sexy you were."
Alexis
moaned and nodded her head. "You know I don't answer those
questions about myself," she replied as she turned her head
to look at him. She held his eyes for a moment before surprising
herself by crushing her mouth to his as her hands found the buttons
on his shirt. When she had his shirt undone and open, her hands
wildly
roamed his smooth chest. Finally she stopped and stood up taking
Sonny's hand in hers.
"What's
wrong?" he asked as he stood up and finished removing his shirt,
which was now hanging down around his bent elbows.
Alexis
licked her lips and moved to him, her hands finding his waist. She
eyed him up and down for a second. "You said between the knees
and the chest?"
Sonny
cocked his head. "Huh?"
Alexis
looked up into his eyes. "The strike zone...between the knees
and the chest?"
Sonny
nodded, a smile spreading rapidly across his face. "Yeah...why?"
She
gave him a half smile. "Just wanted to see if I could find
yours." Came her raspy reply as she trailed a finger across
his stomach.
"You
think you can throw me a curve ball huh?" he asked teasingly.
"I
think so," she replied as she placed several burning kisses
on his chest. "Think you could hit it out of the park?"
Sonny
let out a huge sigh as the sensation of her lips on his skin drove
him to the edge. He pulled her to him and attacked her mouth with
his own. When they were both in need of oxygen, he pulled back and
picked her up in his arms, depositing her onto the couch. Slowly
crawling up the length of her body, he stopped and looked down into
her eyes. "Baby...I'm going to hit a grand slam."
Alexis
smiled, she had no idea what that was...she didn't care.
