Game
Day

1 - Game Day
Alexis
wandered down the steps from her bedroom into the living room of
her penthouse. It was Sunday, and for the first time in a long time,
she was bored. She had already attempted to make herself breakfast,
though why she kept trying to cook was beyond her comprehension.
In the end she had eaten a piece of slightly blackened toast, washing
it down with a glass of orange juice. After a shower, she changed
into her favorite gray warm up suit and customary fuzzy socks. Throwing
her hair back into a ponytail, she had aimlessly walked around her
penthouse in search of something that would hold her interest. She
plopped down on the couch and let out a sigh of boredom. Casually
she lolled her head over to one side, her gaze falling upon her
door. She rolled her eyes, got up and exited the apartment.
Padding,
still in sock-clad feet, across the hall, she raised her hand and
knocked on the door. Moments later, her favorite client and best
friend opened the door. To her surprise, his usually present Armani
suit was replaced by a pair of jeans and a black v-neck sweater.
Once he saw whom it was he stepped aside and motioned her in with
a grin. "What's up?"
Alexis
stopped and turned to face him, shrugging her shoulders. "Nothing.
I was over at my place trying to keep busy, I mean I do have things
I could...and should be doing, but my attention span seems to be
greatly lacking today and I can't seem to concentrate on any one
thing in particular so I decided to take a walk across the hall
and see what you were up to on a Sunday. I mean we rarely see one
another on the weekends, we're both usually holed..."
"Alexis,"
Sonny called out in a singsong voice.
Alexis
stopped her rambling and turned her attention to him. "What?"
Sonny
shook his head and smiled. "If you're bored and want to hang
out, that's fine. Just say so..." he put his hand up. "But
try to do it in five words or less."
Alexis
nodded once and sat down on the couch. "Fine, yes, I'm bored
and I would love to hang out."
Sonny
laughed. "Eleven."
"Excuse
me?"
"I
said five words or less, that was eleven. You just can't help yourself
can you?"
Alexis
narrowed her eyes at him, trying to be menacing. "Funny."
She glanced around the room. "So? What do you want to do?"
Sonny
walked to the bar and poured himself a glass of water. "Football,"
he said before taking a gulp.
"Football?"
"Yeah,
it's Sunday and the Jets are playing, and I planned on watching
them. You can sit and watch with me or you can go back to being
bored. Want a sandwich?"
Alexis
opened her mouth and shut it again. "Football. I've heard of
it. They score goals right?"
Sonny
chuckled. "They score touchdowns."
Alexis
stood up. "I think I'll go be bored."
Sonny
took hold of her arm and sat her back down on the couch. "Come
on, I'll explain the game to you. You might enjoy it."
"I
doubt it," Alexis quipped as she folded her arms across her
chest.
"I'll
go get us some lunch, don't leave," he said as he walked into
the kitchen.
Fifteen
minutes later Sonny re-entered the room carrying a tray consisting
of two very large sandwiches, a bowl of popcorn and two bottles
of Heineken beer. He set the tray on the table. He glanced at Alexis,
who he noticed was giving him the once over. "Something wrong?"
She
shook her head. "No, I was just noticing the jeans. I didn't
realize that you owned denim...or watched football for that matter."
Sonny
shook his head. "You think I sit in my Armani suits, drinking
fine scotch and watch Godfather movies on the weekends?"
Alexis
cocked her head to the side and then nodded after mulling that over
for a moment. "Yes."
Sonny
winced. "Coming from you...Miss buttoned up pinstriped suit
attorney lady..." He pointed to her feet. "Who would ever
think that Miss business suit would wear fuzzy socks."
Alexis
stretched her leg out in front of her and flexed her foot. "I
told you, they're comfortable."
"And
my jeans are comfortable, football is comfortable. Eat your sandwich."
Alexis
leaned towards the tray, her hand moving towards the sandwich, but
stopping on the bottle of Heineken. "And this would be?"
she asked holding it up.
Sonny
took a seat next to her on the couch and fiddled with the television
remote until he found the game. "In some countries they call
it beer."
"Beer?"
"Beer."
"As
in the foamy gold stuff people order at Luke's and Jake's? The stuff
people guzzle right from the bottle and then belch?"
"That's
the stuff," he said and shot her an amused look. "Don't
tell me you've never had a beer?"
"I've
never had the privilege, no."
Sonny
laughed. "Not even once?"
"Nope.
I'm more of a Merlot girl myself."
Sonny
leaned back against the couch and let out a sigh. "You high
brow boarding school types are all the same. I suppose at your college
parties they popped open the Dom Perignon?"
Alexis
looked at him for a second, narrowing her eyes. "I didn't drink...or
go to parties for that matter, in college. I studied."
"Figures,"
Sonny muttered under his breath.
"Excuse
me?"
Sonny
pointed to the television. "We're missing the game."

An
hour and a half later Sonny had tried to explain football, and to
his surprise, Alexis seemed to take sort of an interest. He glanced
over at her as she stared intently at the screen trying to figure
out something that she knew nothing about. He stretched his body,
putting both feet straight out in front of him, his arms splayed
across the back of the couch.
Alexis
felt Sonny watching her. "What?"
Sonny
chuckled. "Nothing, I just love watching you when you're so
intense about something."
"Uh
huh," she muttered as she turned her attention back to the
screen. She pointed at a yellow line going across the field. "What
is this down thing they keep talking about?"
"Okay,"
Sonny said as he sat up, his arm coming down around Alexis' shoulder
as he pointed. "Remember how I told you that they get four
downs per possession?"
Alexis
nodded.
"If
they can move the ball ten yards in one play, then they get another
four downs. That's called a first down."
"Okay,
I think I get it," she replied as they both leaned back into
the couch, much closer now that Sonny's arm was around her. He made
no attempt to move it.
Alexis
was determined not to react to his arm and instead stared at the
television.
They
both stared at the television, each one pretending not to notice
their closeness. The Jets scored a touch down and they both jumped
in their seats, the motions pulling them closer together. Alexis
turned her head slowly as Sonny's hand moved up and down her arm.
"What are you doing?"
Sonny
looked at her, startled. "What?"
Alexis
looked back at the screen. "You...you're...you have your arm
around me."
"Yeah...I
uh...it landed there when I was explaining...is it bothering you?"
"No,"
Alexis said quickly. "Why would it bother me?" Once again
she nervously turned her attention to the television. "Now
they're going to punt?"
"No,
they're going to try to kick a field goal."
"Oh,"
she replied as she turned her head back towards his. He was still
staring at her. "Is something wrong?"
Sonny
shook his head. "No...nothing's wrong," he flashed the
dimples at her.
She
returned his smile and shook her head. "Sonny..."
"Alexis..."
"What's
going on here?"
Sonny
shrugged. "I don't know," he said and smiled even bigger.
"Why
did it suddenly get so strange in here?"
Sonny
leaned forward and whispered,"I think it's called sexual tension."
Alexis
gasped and cast her eyes to the floor, a blush creeping across her
cheeks. "sexual ten..." she stopped and cleared her throat.
She lifted her eyes up to see Sonny still staring at her, smiling.
"What
is so funny?" she asked, her eyes wide.
Sonny
sniffed. "Well, I mean how many times have we been alone together
and ...nothing?"
Alexis
waved her hand. "Is there a point to this?"
"Yeah,
I mean, this is the first time that we've been alone together..."
he stopped and smiled again.
"And?"
Alexis prodded him along.
Sonny
cocked his head to one side. "and...this is the first time
that I've wanted to jump your bones."
Alexis'
eyes were as big as saucers. "Excuse me?" she choked out.
"I
mean..." he squeezed his eyes shut and then opened them back
up. He opened his mouth to speak, but let out a frustrated growl
instead. "Oh what the hell
" he leaned forward and
roughly captured Alexis' mouth with his own. She tensed at first,
but as the kiss became softer and more passionate, she relaxed and
returned his affections, her arms encircling his waist.
They
pulled back from their kiss and looked wide-eyed at one another.
"Wow," Sonny exclaimed.
"You're
not kidding," Alexis answered exasperated.
"I
think I liked that," Sonny smiled.
Alexis
couldn't help but return his smile with one of her own. "I
think I did too."
They
stared at one another a moment longer, both with big goofy grins
on their faces. "So...what do we do now?" Sonny asked
nervously.
Alexis
swallowed and could not believe what she was about to say. "I
say we do that again."
Sonny
nodded and moved in for another kiss. This time the kiss went much
further as he gently pushed Alexis' body down onto the couch cushions.
*********************************************
Sonny
and Alexis sat side by side on the couch, both silent, both unsure
of what to say, both completely naked underneath a blanket. Finally
Alexis rolled her head to the side and met Sonny's eyes. "Did
we just have sex for no apparent reason?"
Sonny
nodded slowly. "Yeah, I think we did."
"Any
idea why?"
"Nope."
Silence
enveloped the room once again as the two turned their gaze back
to the television. "Looks like the Vets won," Alexis commented.
"Jets.
The New York Jets."
"Right.
Jets."
Sonny
laughed and put his arm around Alexis pulling her closer to him.
"Look,
lets not get weird about this. We're good right?"
Alexis
cleared her throat. "Oh, sure. No...I mean, we're fine. Just
two friends hanging out."
"Literally,"
Sonny grinned.
Alexis
poked his chest. "Not funny."
"Hey,
did you like your first football game?"
Alexis
turned looked at him. How can he be thinking about football right
now? She asked herself and then smiled. "I think I like
football."
Sonny
grinned and yanked the blanket off of them. "Wait till baseball
season."
